Chapter 2
-Ken's POV-
Before I could say anything more, Teg flew at me with her guitar. I barely had enough time to grab it before it smashed my head off.
"Say, Teg, a bit high strung today, don't ya think?"
I pushed the guitar a safe distance away from me and to my relief, she lowered it to the ground.
"Sorry about that." She said. I could tell she was a bit embarrassed.
"You just scared me. Don't sneak up on me like that."
"Sorry." I answered.
"Next time I'll be sure to bang a couple of pots together."
Teg smiled and let out a small laugh. The best thing about Teg was that she had the best sense of humor. It was pretty much impossible to hurt her feeling or insult her. She just took everything so well.
"I wasn't lying though." I said.
"Why didn't you tell me you could sing?"
She shrugged and started walking toward the instruments.
"I just never really thought it necessary."
"You mean you have stage fright?"
"No. It's just that...It wasn't something you needed to know...Now come on. These instruments aren't going to tune themselves."
She quickly changed the subject.
"Yeah. I'm sure you were working hard on tuning them before I got here."
She ignored me and I laughed silently to myself.
That's pretty much how our day began. After we tuned the instruments we plugged my iPod into the speakers, strapped sponges to our feet and washed the floor while sliding down the halls, listening to our favorite types of music. Country and old time rock'n'roll. It was the same every Tuesday and Thursday. We did our jobs and enjoyed ourselves at the same time.
.......................................................
It was nearly half passed five by the time we finished and Teg gave me a ride home.
I waved goodbye as I ran up the front steps, hearing the radio in the old truck turn on. I opened the door to see my brother, Logan, sitting on the couch watching the football game. He looked up at me and said, "What took you so long? I almost had to watch the game alone."
"We had a few more instruments to tune then we expected." I answered.
"Oh yeah. I forgot. You were at the school with your girlfriend."
"She's not my...Oh whatever."
It was impossible to dissuade him from something once he had his mind set on it. It came in handy sometimes, but it could also be very annoying.
I went into the kitchen to grab a glass of milk and Susan, my sister, smiled at me saying, "Well, how was your day at school?"
I opened the fridge, pulled out the milk, and poured myself a glass.
"Fine." I answered, taking a swig of milk.
"Why is it that I can't hangout with a girl without Logan thinking that she's my girlfriend?"
"He's just teasing you Ken. He doesn't actually mean it. Which girl would you have in mind?"
"Teg."
"Oh, that explains it."
"What do you mean?"
"Tegan is a really nice girl. We all get along with her really well. She's very considerate and has a great sense of humor."
"You're right about that." I agreed.
"Plus, she's pretty."
"But what does that have to o with Logan's teasing?"
"What I'm saying is, if you have a nice friend who's a girl, he'll tease you about it. He does the same thing with me. You just gotta ignore it."
I finished off my milk and walked into the living room, sat on the couch, and stared at the TV while the wrong team scored a touchdown.
........................................................
-Tegan's POV-
I walked inside the little house and saw Joe and Maria sitting on the couch listening to the football game on the radio since we didn't have cable.
"What took you so long? We just scored a touchdown." Joe said.
"Don't you remember? She was at the school with her boyfriend." Maria told her.
I walked into the kitchen, ignoring them. I figured out a long time ago that I'd never convince them that we were just friends and I had given up trying.
I opened the fridge, pulled the milk out, poured myself a glass of milk, and walked up to my bedroom. I would have liked to listen to the game, but I still had 8 months before I graduated and I wasn't going to learn anything by listening to the game. I pulled my stack of books out of the drawer and sat down, bending over the two inch thick books. I tried to ignore the sound coming from downstairs but unfortunately our team was winning by a mile. I eventually slammed my book shut and called Sue.
"Hello." Her quiet and patient voice came through the phone.
"Hey um, Sue, this is Tegan. My sisters are listening to the game and we're winning, so I can't study. Do you mind if I come over?"
"Sure. I still have some studying to do as well."
"Alright. Thanks. I'll see you in five. Bye."
I packed my books into my ruck-sack and ran downstairs.
"I'm going to go study with Sue." I informed my uninterested sisters.
My sister Maria waved without looking away from the radio and said in a distracted voice, "Alright have fun."
5 minutes later.....
I rang the doorbell of the large brick house and waited a minute before Sue opened the door.
"Hello. Come on in." She told me.
I was allowed to just walked in, but I hated doing that. I came in to see the very sober faces of Ken and Logan looking at the television.
"Let me guess," I said. "You're losing." It wasn't even a question. I knew they were losing and I knew they weren't happy about it.
"What are you doing here?" Ken asked.
"Sue and I are going to hit the books."
So we did.
