Chapter 12
- Tehya's Point of View -
"Thank your highness, but I don't dance." I said, trying to weasel my way out of it.
I did dance, in fact I loved it, but I was in a rather big rush.
"Nonsense, I saw you dance earlier."
"Go on, Tehya." Emily whispered over my shoulder.
"It's not very often you get to dance with the Prince of England."
Yes, I was in England. And yes, I was the only person at the dance...Uh, ball...That was an American. And a not very high up one, at that. The only reason I got into this party was because I had helped Emily with her security problem at her house. Before I new it, I was invited to a ball being held for the Prince himself. I told her I didn't have anything to wear, hoping I wouldn't have to go, but she insisted on buying me a dress. Thankfully, she had very good taste for a rich person and I didn't have to say yes to an ugly dress. The one we got was a navy blue 1950's dress with quarter sleeves and a brown belt. The shoes on the other hand, we had some disagreements about. I wanted this pair of really nice cowboy boots that were half price, she wanted me to get six inch stilettos. I mean, if they were like one inch Mary Jane's then maybe (I said maybe. Because I'm that generous), but with those I had to put my foot down. So we settled on a pair of matching blue flats with a sort of twisted fabric on top. Very, very, understated, which was what I liked.
"Would you excuse me for a minute, your highness?"
I curtseyed and grabbed Emily's arm, dragging her into the hall outside where there was maybe the occasional servant, but no one else.
"What are you doing? You're missing the perfect opportunity." Emily told me in a low voice.
"I don't want to dance with the Prince."
"Do you have any idea what millions of girls would go through for this chance? The throwing away the opportunity of a lifetime."
"A lifetime that I'd rather spend somewhere else."
"Why are you so stubborn?"
"Look, I'm sure he's a nice guy, but he's not my type. I wish you would stop trying to hook me up."
"But with the Prince?"
"I don't care if it was the King himself. I. Don't. Want. To dance. With. The. PRINCE! Okay?"
"Fine...But you're missing out." She said, reluctantly.
"I know, I know. And I'm sure I'll hear about it for the rest of the month. Now can we please go?"
"Alright. You get in the car and I'll make up some story that you were feeling sick. See you in five." She sighed.
"Thanks. I won't forget this." I smiled, running down the steps.
I knew I shouldn't have run down them, but I was in a rush to get out of that place. High society or not, big crowds still tired me out. I waited in the car for what seemed like an hour before Emily finally came, giving the door man a tip. I would have, but I had no money. I was dirt poor.
"Since you haven't eaten anything, let's go to some café and eat there. It'll be a nice change for you."
"Thanks, Emily. That would be nice, but you've already done so much, I won't ask you for another penny."
"Nonsense, you never asked me for one in the first place. Now come on, pretty green eyes, or you'll lose your appetite."
........................................................................................
"Ahh, this is much better." I said, sipping at a nice cup of hot cocoa.
I had chosen a booth in the corner that I could see everything going on around me; a habit of mine.
"You didn't have to do this you know." I told her as the waiter brought us our food.
"Pshaw, I like to have company when I eat. Plus, you're a cheep friend to have along." She laughed.
"Still, I wish you'd let me pay for my food."
"With what? All you have is enough to get back to the states. Why did you leave in the first place?"
I looked down at my mud cake (Yummy!) and cut off a chunk, stuffing it into my mouth.
"I'd rather not talk about it."
"Alright, fine. So, are you staying at my place tonight?"
I looked up at her, confused.
"Of course not!"
"What do you mean? Of course you are."
"I couldn't take anymore from you. I won't stand for it."
"You won't be taking anything away. I live alone in a huge mansion. It'll be nice to have company."
"You really won't take no for an answer, will you?" I laughed.
She smiled and shook her head.
"It's always been a dreadful habit of mine."
- Alright, here you go. Just to let you know, I know absolutely nothing about England except for the fact it's extremely foggy. I'm not even sure about that. So my facts could be wrong. I hope you liked the chapter and if you did, I'd love to hear your thought. Thank you :D - Anna
