Chapter 15

Ursa sits at the Slytherin table for dinner and sees Draco has an Evening Prophet. "What happened for them to put out an Evening Prophet?" Ursa asks.

"Nothing huge. They raided the manor again." Ursa snatches the paper from Draco.

"'A confidential tip-off?' That little snitch." Ursa's glass shatters.

     "Huh?"

"Harry. He must have told someone else about the cabinet and went looking for it."

"At least everything is hidden or in vaults."

"Shut up." Ursa gets up and storms over to Harry, rolling up the newspaper as she walks.

"Oh no." Hermione says as she sees Ursa coming.

     "What?" Harry questions.

"Leave my family alone." Ursa snaps as she hits Harry over the head repeatedly with the newspaper. Ursa turns and storms back to the Slytherin table, where Draco and others are  laughing.

"What did you do?" Hermione asks.

     "No idea." Harry says.

"Dad went to their manor again." Ron says as he comes across the article. "Based off 'a confidential tip-off.'"

"Yeah mine. Oh that's why she's mad."

Snape walks up to the Slytherin table. "A word Miss Malfoy." He says. Ursa rolls her eyes and follows Snape into the hall. "Why did you hit Potter?"

"Why do you care?" Ursa asks.

"Ursa..." Ursa holds out the paper.

"He was the 'confidential tip-off.'" Ursa says before switching to their connection. "He suspects Draco is a Death Eater."

     "Did you den-"

"Of course I denied it. To the Order, I took the Mark so Draco didn't have to."

     "Did they find anything?"

"Of course not, we hid everything important when Father was first arrested."

"Don't hit him again." Snape says aloud.

"Fine." Snape hits Ursa over the head with the newspaper. "Hey!" Ursa snatches it from his hand and goes back inside.

"Dumbledore wanted Potter so it is just you tonight." Snape says in detention.

"Sorry I laughed. It was a little funny you have to admit." Ursa says.

     "For you maybe." Snape snaps.

     "His response was funny."

"And disrespectful. Do your homework." After a few minutes of silence Ursa speaks.

"I could hear you, you know. When you sent me in the kitchen when my mother and aunt showed up."

"I know. Your mother doesn't know that you know right?"

"Right. Did you actually want me to raise my hand when you asked if anyone thought they could do nonverbal spells?"

"Yes. I also know you were trying to provoke me by attacking back."

"Just wanted to give the class a show."

     "I would have won."

"If I had tried we would have been fighting the whole class period. I've been training for years."

"And you have yet to beat me."

"We've only dueled like once and that was a while ago. I almost did win."

     "Barely. Homework."

     "I did!"

     "Homework."

After a few minutes Ursa speaks again. "I'm bored."

"You're not going to let me grade in peace are you?"

     "Probably not."

"If you cant stay quiet for the rest of detention I could stop you from going to Hogsmeade."

     "You wouldn't."

     "Try me."

     "Fine."

***

"Miss Malfoy, stay back." Snape says after class one day. Neither speaks till everyone leaves. "What is your brother's plan?"

"I don't think he has one yet." Ursa replies.

"Try to get him to talk to me. To let me help him."

"I'll try but he barely is letting me help. I could possibly need your help with something. I realized a little late that I may have a problem in the future. When the time comes that my true allegiance is revealed and I have to go into hiding, he can still use the Mark to torture me. I need a way to ease the pain. I already know how to make myself Unplottable."

"It will take some time to make. Come back after dinner and we'll work on your training."

After dinner, Ursa returns to Snape's classroom. "Let me see your notebook." Snape says. Ursa hands it to him and sits on a desk. "How far in this list did you get?"

"I think all but the last one." Ursa replies. Snape flips to the last one and freezes.

     "Where did you find this?"

     "What?"

     "Sectumsempra."

"In one of your old textbooks. Why?"

"It is an incredibly dangerous spell I invented. Possibly deadly."

"You know that makes me more interested in it right?"

"Looking at your notes, you figured out what it does."

"Never tried it but yes. It uses parts of two other spells I know so I figured it out."

     "What spells?"

     "Sectumvadum and Permanent-Sticking Charm."

"I want to teach you to heal it before I teach you to use it."

"Fair enough. I've been thinking about how to threaten you."

     "Why would you do that?"

"Keep my streak up of threatening DADA teachers."

     "Well I would threaten back."

     "And go through with it."

Ursa sits in the potions lab on day after classes working. "And what do you think you are doing Miss Malfoy?" Slughorn asks when he walks in and sees her.

"Making a potion for Hagrid." Ursa replies. "Snape let me experiment and make Hagrid's potions in the evening. I'll just clean up and be on my way. I was almost done anyways."

"Experiment?" Slughorn questions as he walks up to Ursa's table.

"Yes, the textbooks often don't have the perfect recipe." Ursa shows Slughorn her open textbook. Ursa turns to the Draught of Living Death "I used this recipe to make the Draught of Living Death."

"Interesting, where did you find all this information?"

"A variety of sources. Other books, Professor Snape, the Ilvermorny potion's master, and some trial and error."

"Yes, I had heard you went to Ilvermorny. This is all extraordinary Miss Malfoy."

     "Thank you sir."

"Do you use school ingredients for your potions?"

"Depends. For Hagrid, yes because it is for the school. For experimenting, no, I buy all my own ingredients as I am very picky in what I use."

"Well as long as you are not making a mess you can continue to use the classroom for your work."

     "Thank you sir."

"I must say, I have only known you for two weeks but I expect great things from you Miss Malfoy. Whether they are good or bad is yet to be seen."

"I am not like my father or aunt if that is what you are alluding to. I do not even like my aunt and she hates me. I was with Harry at the Ministry when my father was arrested."

"Pansy, we need to talk." Ursa says one day after classes.

"What's going on Ursa?" Pansy asks as Ursa leads them to their dorm room.

"We... there will come a time soon where I will have to make a choice and the choice I will make will put you in danger unless I do this now."

     "Ursa?"

     "We need to break up."

     "What? Why?"

"To keep you safe. I can't tell you anything specific. I don't want to do this."

"Then don't! Ursa I love you."

"I love you too. Which is my I am doing this."

"You wouldn't break up with me if you loved me."

"I promise it will all make sense eventually."

"Is your family making you do this?"

"No. I promise one day you'll understand why." Tears come to Ursa's eyes as Pansy starts crying. Ursa gently kisses Pansy's forehead before leaving the room. Ursa leaves the common room and searches for Draco. She runs to him and cries into his shoulder when she hugs him.

"Whoah." Draco says. "What's going on?"

"I had to break up with Pansy." Ursa replies.

"What? Why would you do that? You two are in love."

"That's why I had to. When the Order finds out my true allegiance they could use her to get to me. I have to keep her safe."

     "That makes some sense."

A few days later Hermione drags Ursa outside to the Quidditch stands. "What are we doing out here?" Ursa asks.

"You've been moping ever since you broke up with Pansy. We're going to watch Gryffindor tryouts." Hermione replies.

"Fine." They sit and Lyra lands on Ursa's shoulder.

"Does she ever leave you alone when you're outside?"

"She will if I tell her to but she seems to know I am not doing well right now."

They are sitting in the stands when it is Cormac McLaggen's turn to try out for Keeper. "Cunfundo." Hermione whispers. Ursa's eyes widen.

"Hermione!" McLaggen jerks suddenly in the wrong direction.

     "Not a word." Hermione says.

"My lips are sealed. Good job casting that wandlessly." Ursa looks at her watch. "Shit I'm late for Hagrid's." Ursa leaves the stands and runs down to Hagrid's hut. She bows to Buckbeak who is tied up outside.

"Noble Phoenix." Buckbeak says as he bows back.

     "Hello Buckbeak." Ursa says.

     "It's Witherwings now." Ursa chuckles.

"I forgot we can't have people finding out you're back. Do you know where Hagrid is?"

     "In the garden."

"Thanks." Ursa goes around Hagrid's hut to the garden and sees him digging up potatoes. "Sorry I'm late Hagrid. Got dragged to the Quidditch tryouts and lost track of time." Fang barks and jumps at Ursa. "Hello Fang." Ursa chuckles and pets Fang's head.

"It's alright Ursa." Hagrid replies. "I knew you'd show up eventually. You always do. Wanna lend me a hand?"

"Sure." Ursa replies before rolling up her sleeves. She sees her Dark Mark and quickly pushes her sleeves back down. "Still not used to that." She mumbles to herself.

      "Hm?"

      "Nothing."

After they gather potatoes, they go back around the hut. "Oi!" Hagrid yells at three students near Buckbeak. "Get away from him! He'll have your fingers-" The students turn around and they recognize them as the trio. "Oh. It's you lot." Ursa goes inside before Hagrid follows her, slamming the door behind him.

"Hagrid!" Harry yells from the other side of the door. "Open up, we want to talk to you!" Ursa looks at Hagrid who just sets the potatoes down by the cauldron. "If you don't open the door, we'll blast it open!" Hagrid walks over to the door and flings it open.

"I'm a teacher!" Hagrid roars. "A teacher Potter! How dare you threaten to break down my door."

     "I'm sorry sir." Harry says.

"Since when have you called me 'sir'?"

"Since when have you called me 'Potter'?"

"All right, come in then, you ungrateful little..."

"Hagrid!" Ursa exclaims from by the kettle. The trio scurry in and sit at the wooden table.

"Well?" Hagrid says grumpily "What's this? Feeling sorry for me? Reckon I'm lonely or something?"

"No." Harry says. "We wanted to see you."

      "We've missed you." Hermione says.

"Missed me have you?" Hagrid says with a snort. "Yeah right."

"Hagrid." Hermione says. "We really wanted to carry on with Care of Magical Creatures, you know, but none of us could fit it into our schedules."

"Yeah right." Hagrid says. "At least Ursa had a decent excuse."

"My mother banned me, to absolutely no one's surprise." Ursa says. "Of course, I never told her I help Hagrid every weekend."

A funny squelching sound from a barrel turns the trio's attention. The barrel full of giant grub making noise. "What are they Hagrid?" Harry asks.

     "Just giant grubs." Ursa replies.

"And they grow into..." Ron starts.

"Nothing." Hagrid says. "I got them to feed Aragog." Hagrid suddenly bursts into tears and Ursa pats his shoulder.

"Hagrid?" Hermione questions as she gets up and puts an arm around his shoulders. "What is it?"

     "It's Aragog." Ursa replies.

"He got ill over the summer and he's not getting better." Hagrid says through his tears.

"Is there anything we can do?" Hermione asks.

"I don't think there is Hermione." Ursa replies.

"See the rest of the tribe, they're getting a bit funny now that he's ill. I don't think it would be safe for anyone but me to go near the colony at the moment."
