Chapter 5
"Welcome all!" Lucius says from his place at the ballroom doors. "Thank you all for coming to the birthday celebration of my children, Ursa and Draco Malfoy!" Ursa and Draco walk in together.
Lucius introduces Ursa to various boys and their families. Ursa manages to escape him and goes to the music room and sits at the piano. (Show & Tell - Melanie Martinez)
"You pull me by my hair, so I don't go nowhere
Tell me you love me but you treat me like I'm never there
You say the cruelest words and yes they break my heart
Cause I'm over here working my ass off
Why is it so hard to see
If I cut myself I would bleed
I'm just like you, you're like me
Imperfect and human are we
Show and tell.
I'm on display for all you fuckers to see.
Sho-"
Ursa is interrupted by Draco opening the door. "You know you didn't soundproof the room right?"
"Oh no. Please tell me no one heard me."
"Just the piano and even then I couldn't hear it until I was closer. And I heard a little bit of the lyrics as I got closer."
"Thank God. I would be in such trouble."
"You really should find music that won't get you in trouble."
"I know. Our parents already hate that it's often Muggle music."
"I assume you're hiding."
Ursa nods. "Father has been introducing me to every pureblood boy and their parents. So I am hiding from him. Taking a little break."
"Was that one of your own songs?"
"Something I've been working on." Ursa stands. "About being a Malfoy and in the spotlight. Being forced to be someone I'm not."
"Come on. Someone is bound to come looking for you soon."
Ursa nods and they go back to the ballroom. "There you are Ursa." Lucius says. "Come with me dear." Ursa follows Lucius to a couple. "Ah Fawley. This is my daughter Ursa." Lucius whispers to Ursa. "The other line. Not closely related to your grandmother."
"It is a pleasure to meet you." Ursa says.
"And you." Mr Fawley says.
Mrs Fawley waves down someone. "Achilles come here dear."
Ursa hold back her smirk as Achilles walks over and pales. "Oh Fawley. It is a pleasure to see you again."
"M-Malfoy." Achilles stutters.
"Do you two know each other?" Lucius asks.
"Yes, we do." Ursa replies with a small smirk.
"Really?" Mr Fawley questions. "How do you two know each other?"
"He was part of the Durmstrang group that was at Hogwarts last year. We only met once. At the Yule Ball, where he learned some very important lessons."
"What do you mean Ursa?" Lucius asks.
"Achilles Fawley is the Durmstrang boy I... dealt with in the middle of the ball. The one who did not take 'no' for an answer and called me a 'Mudblood' for defending myself."
Achilles looks like he wants to disappear as his father looks at him angrily. "Why does her story not line up with yours?" Mr Fawley asks. "You told us what the Prophet said was wrong. That she started it."
"Oh I was the one that made it a fight." Ursa says. "I will take full responsibility for that. However, I had told him multiple times I did not want to dance with him and he decided to touch me anyways."
"Oh um..." Achilles mumbles.
"Were you too ashamed to admit to your parents that you were in the wrong, or that you were bested by a fourth year girl in a dress, corset, and heels?"
"We will deal with you later." Mrs Fawley says to Achilles.
"Go find your brother Ursa." Lucius says. "I believe we need to speak."
"I agree." Mr Fawley says.
"Yes Father." Ursa says. "Goodbye Achilles." Ursa smirks before walking away. She finds Draco and he notices her smirk.
"What did you do?" Draco asks with a sigh.
"What makes you think I did something?"
"That smirk."
"Remember that boy from the Yule Ball?"
"The one you fought?"
"Mhm. He's here and he lied to his parents about what happened. I just embarrassed him in front of his parents. Father told me to come find you so he could talk with Achilles's father."
"You are way too happy."
"Probably."
"Psycho."
Ursa chuckles and spots red hair. "Is that a Weasley? What is a Weasley doing here?" Ursa pales. "I hope it's not George, Fred, or Ron."
"It's the one that graduated last year. Percy I think."
"Thank Lord it's him." Ursa says with a relieved sigh. "It's just the Minister's new lapdog."
"Huh?"
"That's what Ron calls him. He disowned his family for believing Harry and I that You-Know-Who is back and supporting Dumbledore. Percy was just promoted to Junior Assistant to the Minister and Mr Weasley suspects it is so the Ministry can keep an eye on their family because of their support of Dumbledore. They had a fight and Percy left."
"How do you know this?"
"Hermione got tired of listening to Ron so he started sending me letters to vent. For some reason they can't send anything to Harry right now and told me not to either." Percy notices Ursa and looks her in distain. "Great he's spotted me. I really hope Ron had a chance to tell him not to tell anyone we are friends." The Minister starts to walk towards them, Percy on his trail. "I have to be nice don't I?"
"Yes." Draco replies.
"Hello children." Fudge says as he approaches them.
"Hello Minister." Draco says.
"Hello sir." Ursa says at the same time.
"So who's birthday are we celebrating today?" Fudge asks.
"Both of us sir." Ursa replies. "Mine is right after school starts so we are having one party together." Ursa glances at Percy in distain when the Minister is not paying attention.
"Well happy birthday to both of you then."
"Thank you sir." Draco replies.
"Have you met my Junior Assistant before?"
"Yes"
"No but I am familiar with his family." Ursa says.
"I wanted to speak to you Miss Malfoy." Fudge says.
"Oh?" Ursa questions.
"I understand Dumbledore is some how forcing you to publicly agree with the nonsense that You-Know-Who is back." A window nearby cracks and Draco puts a hand on Ursa's shoulder. "I have instructed the Daily Prophet to exclude you from their stories."
"Thank you sir." Ursa says with a fake smile.
"If you need any help with Dumbledore, please let me or my Junior Assistant know."
"Yes sir." The crack in the window grows and Draco squeezes her shoulder.
"Relax." Draco whispers.
"Ah there's your parents." Fudge says before nodding at Draco and Ursa in goodbye and walk away with Percy following him.
"Go outside." Draco says. "I'll deal with the window. Go relax before you break something." Ursa nods tensely and goes outside. She storms to the owlery and Ursa grabs her hidden writing supplies. She writes two quick notes.
"Lyra." Ursa snaps. Lyra lands in front of her and hoots angrily. "I'm sorry Lyra. Just a little worked up." Ursa ties a note to each leg. "Left is for Dumbledore, right is for Ron if you can find him." Lyra takes off and Ursa puts the writing supplies back. She walks out and goes into the garden courtyard. She grunts as she is thrown back against the old tree. "What the?"
"Did you really think you could embarrass me in front of my parents?" Achilles says as he steps out of the shadows.
"Achilles." Ursa growls.
"No place to hide your wand this time."
"It is always so cute when people underestimate me." Ursa says as she pulls her wand out of a hidden pocket. "Hidden pockets." Achilles growls and shoots a spell at Ursa. She blocks his spells until she sees an opening. She shoots a Stunning Charm at him and chuckles as it hits him. Ursa walks up to him. "Pathetic. Levicorpus." Ursa walks to the back doors, Achilles floating behind her. She walks into ballroom and the room goes quiet. She walks over to Achilles parents. "I believe this idiot belongs to you. Libracorpus. Rennervate."
Achilles scrambles to his feet. "You little-" Achilles starts before he is interrupted by Ursa's wand under his chin.
"Have you not realized I am a powerful Dark Witch yet?" Ursa hisses. "And even if I was not, the look on my parents' faces both show that they are ready to kill you. My family is very protective of each other. Get out of my house before I make you wish you were never born." Achilles scrambles back away from Ursa and runs out of the ballroom. Mr Fawley sighs and nods to Lucius before him and his wife walk out.
Narcissa and Lucius walk and Draco runs over to Ursa. "Are you alright?" Narcissa asks worriedly.
"I am fine Mother." Ursa replies. "Nothing I could not handle. Nothing a little threatening to make him wish he was not born could not take care of."
"You are definitely related to Bellatrix." Lucius says. "You are just as terrifying."
"I told you." Draco says. "After that duel at the Yule Ball no one has dared to anger her."
"Except you." Ursa says.
"I know you love me too much to kill me."
"Mhm sure."
Narcissa rolls her eyes and chuckles. "Are you sure you are okay?"
"My back may hurt later from being thrown into the old tree but I can deal with it then."
"Alright Cub." Narcissa says before kissing Ursa's forehead.
Pansy cautiously walks up to them. "May I interrupt?" She asks.
"Of course Miss Parkinson. Behave you two."
"With that idiot gone, you have nothing to worry about." Ursa replies. Narcissa and Lucius both roll their eyes before leaving the children.
"Was that the boy from the Yule Ball?" Pansy asks.
"Yep. I embarrassed him earlier too. He apparently told his parents a different story and he just tried to attack me in the garden." Draco walks away and Ursa finally looks at Pansy. "You look beautiful."
"So do you."
"Of course I do. I always do."
"Not when you're sleeping. Your hair all over and drool on your face."
Ursa rolls her eyes and gently shoves Pansy. "You're annoying."
"Maybe but you like me."
"You wouldn't be my girlfriend if I didn't. The Minister and his lapdog seem to think Dumbledore is forcing me to publicly agree with him."
"His lapdog?"
"Percy Weasley. For a Gryffindor, he's quite ambitious when it comes to his job. To the point that he's an ass kisser." They both laugh.
"Never thought I would hear you talk bad about a Weasley."
"Only Percy. How have you been since the party?"
"Meh. It's kinda boring. My parents are often working so I'm alone."
"Yeah I used to hate summers. It was just me and a babysitter or nanny."
"Babysitter?"
"I was a troublemaker. I couldn't be alone all day. We tried it once. I accidentally set the garden on fire. I managed to put it out but a burnt a garden is hard to hide." They both laugh.
Across the ballroom, Lucius watches them interact, noticing something. Narcissa notices him staring and snaps him back to reality. "Everything alright, love?" Narcissa asks.
"Do you think Pansy and Ursa seem a little too close to you?" Lucius asks.
"They are teenage girls and best friends, Lucius. Do not read too much into it. Besides, if they were something more, it would be alright as long as she knows she must marry a man in the end. Right?"
"Right Cissa." Lucius mumbles and Narcissa chuckles.
"I am so glad you're here." Ursa says. "My father has been introducing me to parents of and pureblood boys all afternoon. Even a bloody eleven-year-old. He hasn't even been to Hogwarts yet."
"All Slytherin?" Pansy asks.
"Luckily no. He knows there are very few pureblood Slytherins left so he has reluctantly branched out to Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw."
"Not Gryffindor?"
"The only male Gryffindor pureblood is Longbottom."
"And your aunt tortured his parents. Yeah probably not going to work."
"You think?" They both laugh. "Besides who said I wanted to marry a boy?"
"Ursa..."
"I know, I know. It's unavoidable if I don't want to be disowned. One of the times I hate my family's views."
"Are you saying you'd marry a Mudblood?"
"No. Not at all. I meant the 'get married to a boy and have kids to continue the bloodline thing.' The lowest is half-blood and even then at the least their grandparents can't be Muggle-born. I have some taste."
"Like Potter?"
"First of all. Ew no. Second of all. His maternal grandparents were Muggles. Third of all. Yes, let's be with the boy who destroyed the Dark Lord. What could go wrong? If my father stoops to as low as a half-blood, they are going to be a son of one of the 'proper' half-bloods. The ones who hide their muggle ancestry and are ashamed of it."
"It's hot in here."
"It is. There is a nice breeze outside. I just need to tell Draco." Ursa walks up to Draco. "Pansy and I are going out to the garden, try to keep our parents from noticing."
"Fine." Draco says.
Ursa leads Pansy outside and takes her hand when they are outside the sight of anyone. "This place is beautiful." Pansy says.
"Thanks." Ursa replies. "My mother and I work hard to make it nice."
"Your mother? Really? I can't see her gardening."
"Well she uses magic. I do it by hand sometimes." Ursa leads Pansy over to the sad looking plot. "I'm only allowed to do it by hand here. It's sad looking but I like it."
"Well I think it's adorable." Ursa smiles softly. "What are we doing out here?"
"Cooling off." Ursa says. "Want to dip our feet in the pool?"
"Sure." They kick their heels off by a chair. The bunch up their dresses and dip their feet in the pool.
"I'm glad to spend time with you outside of school and Draco's friends."
"You mean the people you should be friends with?"
"I know, I know. I have a poor choice in friends. It was an accident."
"How was it an accident?"
"Hermione was tutoring me in Charms and the boys were often there. We bonded over my love of annoying Draco. It's why the Weasley twins like me." Pansy raises an eyebrow in jealousy and Ursa chuckles before gently kissing her. "As a friend Pansy."
"You know, I never needed help in Transfiguration."
"I know."
"How?"
"I told McGonagall I was tutoring you and she said you didn't need it."
"Then why did you do it?"
"To spend time with you. Away from everyone else."
"Aww. That's cute."
"We should head back inside."
"Sure." They get up and they dry their feet with magic before putting their heels back on. "Wow that made my feet feel better." Ursa takes Pansy's hand and they walk through the garden again. Ursa stops at a flower that matches Pansy's dress. She carefully picks the flower and tucks Pansy's hair behind her ear. She adds the flower and Pansy blushes. They kiss again. "Thank you."
"You're welcome." They grab hands again and walk down the path towards the manor.
Lucius comes down the path looking for them. "There you are Ursa." He says and narrows his eyes as he sees them holding hands. "Just what is going on here?"
"Go on inside Pansy." Ursa says. "I will be there in a minute."
Pansy looks between them. "Are you sure?"
"Yes." They let go of each other's hand and Pansy walks away. When she is out of sight, Lucius grabs Ursa's arm and drags her into the garden shed.
"Explain. Now." Lucius says.
"Nothing." Ursa replies.
"I'm not an idiot Ursa."
"We are best friends. That's it."
"You had better." Lucius draws his wand. "You have a duty. You know this." Ursa secretly draws her wand as Lucius pushes his into the side of her neck. "I will not have you getting yourself disowned for something like this. Do you understand me?" Ursa doesn't respond. "Stu-"
"Petrificus Totalus!" Ursa casts, interrupting him. Lucius's arms and legs snap together and he falls to the ground. "I'm sorry if you were not about to hurt me." Ursa runs out of the shed and closes the door. "Colloportus." Ursa walks through the garden and finds Pansy waiting for her.
"Are you okay?" Pansy asks.
"For now. I'll be in deep trouble later." Ursa kisses her. "Come on. We should get inside before that curse wears off my father."
"You cursed your father?"
"Yes, I thought he was about to hurt me. Come on." They go back inside and Draco finds them.
"Father went looking for you." Draco says.
"I uh... I know." Ursa says as she scratches the back of her neck.
"What did you do?"
"She cursed him." Pansy says.
Draco's jaw drops. "Are you mad? You are going to be in so much trouble."
"I know." Ursa mumbles.
"Why did you do that?"
"I thought he was about to hurt me." Pansy's parents wave her down and Pansy hugs Ursa before going to them.
Narcissa walks up to them. "Do you know where your father is?"
"I would check the garden shed." Ursa replies. Narcissa furrows her brow at Ursa before going outside.
"They are going to kill you." Draco says. "What happened?"
"He thinks that Pansy and I are more than friends. I mean we are. He doesn't seem to be happy about it. I was worried he would hurt me so I cursed him."
"Ursa you are so dead. I don't think Mother will keep Father from punishing you."
"I know." Narcissa and Lucius walk back in and look at Ursa in anger.
"You're screwed."
"I know." Ursa sighs.
Once everyone is gone, Narcissa roughly grabs Ursa's arm. "Wand. Now." Narcissa growls.
"Yes Mother." Ursa says quietly as she takes her wand out. Narcissa snatches it from her and drags her upstairs to her room. Narcissa pushes Ursa into her room, causing Ursa to trip over the bottom her dress. The dress rips and Ursa manages to catch herself before she hits the floor. Narcissa slams the door closed and locks it. "Well that's a new level of anger. Silence and rough." Ursa looks at the hem of her dress. "Well I guess I should change."
