Chapter 28
A few hours later, the trio and Ursa are walking down the stairs. "I can't understand why you don't want to wear it Ronald." Hermione says.
"I look like a bloody idiot, that's why." Ron replies.
"Not more than usual Ron." Ursa says. She notices Harry walk into the drawing room and follows him. She sees Kreacher right inside and kneels down to his height. "Hello Kreacher. How are you?"
"Miss Ursa!" Kreacher says. "Hello. Kreacher is fine. When did Miss Ursa get here?"
"Late last night. I snuck out."
"Miss Cissy isn't going to like that."
"No she is not. She is apparently as angry as she was when And- the blood-traitor and Mud- Muggle-born she married's relationship was revealed." Harry glances at Ursa when she almost says 'Mudblood.'
"Oh no. Kreacher wishes Miss Ursa good luck."
"Thank you Kreacher. I'll need it." Ursa stands and looks at the tapestry.
"Nasty brat." Kreacher says towards Harry. "Standing there bold as brass. Harry Potter, the boy who stopped the Dark Lord."
"Kreacher..." Ursa warns.
"Friends of Mudbloods and blood-traitors alike. If my poor mistress knew-"
"Kreacher!" Sirius exclaims. "That's enough of your bile. Away with you."
"Of course Master." Kreacher growls. "Kreacher lives to serve the Noble House of Black." Ursa smiles sadly at Kreacher.
"Sorry about that. He never was very pleasant, even when I was a boy. Not to me anyways."
"Maybe if you were ever a little nice to him." Ursa mumbles.
"You grew up here?" Harry asks.
"This is my parents' house." Sirius replies.
"That's how I knew about this place." Ursa says. "I used to visit my great aunt, his mother, with my mother and Draco."
"I offered it to Dumbledore as headquarters for the Order. About the only useful thing I've been able to do. This is the Black family tree. The stupid tapestry that Kreacher is worried about me getting rid of."
"I'm worried about it too. I know you hate our family but it is important to my part of the family."
"Toujours Pur?" Harry says, mispronouncing it. "Wasn't that part of what you whispered to the goblin at Gringotts? I only heard that bit."
"First of all, it's 'Toujours Pur.' And yes I did. It means 'Always Pure.' It's the Black family motto. All the old families have one."
"Why'd you have to say that at Gringotts?" Sirius asks.
"Part of the password to get into the Lestrange vault. The long ass password."
"I meant to ask why you had to go in there." Harry says. "You said something to Draco."
"Family needed me to see if something was in there still."
"Why'd they let you in there?"
"I had the key and Bellatrix Lestrange is my aunt remember."
"My deranged cousin." Sirius says.
"That's an understatement if I ever heard one. Was she always that mad or did it come from Azkaban?"
"She was always a little mad but that can come with being a Black."
"Yeah, I know it can. I'm still surprised it effected her more than you."
"What do you mean?" Harry asks.
"His parents are second cousins. That's how far the pureblood families go to keep the bloodline pure."
"The pureblood families are all interrelated." Sirius says. "If you're only going to let your children marry purebloods your choices are pretty limited."
"There aren't many of us left. The intermarriage is part of the reason I am a little mad. Dark Arts and trauma is responsible for the rest."
"Bella's madness definitely got worse when she met Voldemort and became a Death Eater. Azkaban certainly didn't help. Always ranting about how Voldemort would come for her and she would see you and Draco again."
"Too bad she only likes Draco now. I don't think she's realized I am a blood-traitor yet but she definitely suspects it."
"I hated the lot of them. My parents and their pureblood mania. They thought Voldemort had the right idea, purification of the Wizarding race, getting rid of Muggle-borns and having purebloods in charge. Until Voldemort showed his true colors."
"That power was his true motivation and the extents he was willing to go through to get it?"
"Yes. Is Cissy still like that?" Ursa laughs.
"Of course! She hates that I am friends with Harry, Hermione, and Ron. Though she thinks I stopped speaking to them unless I had to for school. You should have seen how pissed she was when she caught me with them in Diagon Alley. So much cursing. I'm surprised she didn't kick me out or tell my father. I'll probably be in more trouble if Draco tells her who I am with. Severus thinks he did since she was angrier when I contacted him the second time than she was when she found I was missing."
"Cissy was cursing? The woman who hates cursing. You pissed her off that badly?"
"I may have also talked back and cursed in public and went out without my hair up and makeup. 'Fuck' was said a lot."
"How the hell are you still alive?"
"No idea. Though she does tend to parent in a loving way, unlike your parents and my grandparents."
"Who is Cissy?" Harry asks.
"My mother." Ursa says. "Narcissa."
"Do you believe that crap Ursa?" Sirius asks.
"Kinda. I believe that purebloods are more powerful because our magic isn't diluted, or rather is supposedly not diluted, by Muggle blood and that Muggle-borns are descendants of Squibs. It does not mean we have to kill and mistreat 'dirty blood' or deserve to rule over them. Though Hermione is starting to make me question the more powerful thing. You should have seen how far Ron flew when she used the Stunning Charm on him. Didn't knock him out like it should've but he definitely flew." Sirius runs his fingers across his name.
"My mother did that after I ran away. I was 16."
"She scared me." Ursa says.
"Where'd you go?" Harry asks.
"'Round your dad's." Sirius replies. "I was always welcomed at the Potters'. I see him so much in you Harry. You so are very much alike."
"I'm not so sure."
"I was surprised to see you still on here Ursa."
"You're on here?"
"The whole Black family is, well unless they or an ancestor were disowned. Sirius is my first cousin once removed, well in the shortest line." Ursa traces the tree from Sirius to her as she speaks. "His mother and my grandfather were siblings. Then my mother. Then Draco and I." Ursa points to her picture. "Through his father I think we're third cousins. That's why Kreacher listens to me. Because I am on here. You and I are very distant cousins too. Same with the Weasley's."
"Arthur's something like my second cousin once removed." Sirius says.
"Then why is Kreacher rude to me?" Harry asks.
"Number of reasons." Ursa replies. "How distant you are, you aren't on the tapestry, you're a half-blood, you destroyed the Dark Lord. Same with the Weasley's except they are blood-traitors. My mother was born a Black."
"But you're a blood-traitor too."
"Yes but unlike Sirius, I am kind to Kreacher."
"Like you were to Dobby."
"Yes." Ursa runs her fingers over Andromeda's name.
"Who's that?"
"My other aunt, Andromeda. She was disowned."
"My favorite cousin." Sirius says.
"She was disowned for marrying a Muggle-born. Ted Tonks. They were 'the blood-traitor and Muggle-born' I mentioned to Kreacher."
"Like our Tonks?" Harry asks.
"Yes." Sirius replies. "Andromeda is her mother. Her and Tonks told me you used to exchange letters with Andromeda."
"Yes, through Muggle mail." Ursa says.
"Do you consider her family?"
"Yes, and you and Tonks too. Obviously not in front of my parents but they don't even know I know you and Andromeda exist."
"Are all of the Blacks named after stars?" Harry asks. "I recognize some from Astronomy."
"Other than Narcissa." Sirius says. "Never knew why she wasn't."
"Because the Black family is patriarchal." Ursa says. "My grandmother was told she couldn't have any more children after my mother and my mother being the third girl, my great-grandfather didn't care what she was named. In the Black and Malfoy families the Patriarchs get final say on names. So my father has to approve of Draco and my children's names, if I ever have children." Ursa adds the last part for Harry. "As for me still being on here, Kreacher said Walburga was going to erase me but my mother convinced her not to because of why I was sent away."
"To grow up away from the darkness of your family names?" Harry asks.
"No. I recently found out that was a cover. My grandfather, Abraxas, was harming me because I was not a boy. Malfoy firstborns were always male before me and he was very patriarchal too. They did try to get me back but the papers my mother signed were through the Muggle government and they would have had to break the ISS to get me back." Ursa wipes her eyes.
"That sounds about right for Abraxas." Sirius says.
"I think I'm going to go see what the others are up to." Ursa leaves the room, Kreacher follows her from outside the room.
"Sirius," Harry says. "when I was... When I saw Mr. Weasley attacked, I wasn't just watching. I was the snake. And afterwards, in Dumbledore's office... there was a moment when I wanted to... This connection between me and Voldemort. What if the reason for it is that I am becoming more like him? I just feel so angry all the time. And what if, after everything that I've been through... something's gone wrong inside me? What if I'm becoming bad?"
"I want you to listen to me very carefully, Harry. You're not a bad person. You're a very good person who bad things have happened to. You understand? Besides, the world isn't split into good people and Death Eaters. We've all got both light and dark inside of us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are. Look at Ursa. She's gone through bad things too. Being sent away, friendless for years, the graveyard. Raised to be a powerful Death Eater. Her guardian punishing with violence. She is a Dark witch and has extensive knowledge of the Dark Arts which does effect your mental state. Her family are followers of Voldemort. But look where she is. Here. With us. She has a huge heart and cares for her family and friends. She cares about everyone. She's a Malfoy that is friends with non-purebloods. She is proof that the world isn't black and white. Isn't split between good and bad people. She's gray. She could easily be dark if she chose to but she didn't. She chose to act on the side of good."
"But-"
"Harry. You are not a bad person. End of story."
Kreacher pulls on Ursa's pant leg outside the room. "Miss Ursa?" Kreacher says.
"Yes Kreacher?" Ursa asks and Kreacher holds a box up to her. She kneels down to his height. "What is this?"
"A Christmas present." Kreacher replies.
"You didn't have to Kreacher." Ursa gently takes the box and opens it. A necklace sits in the box. It is a silver dragon with a purple jewel in its claws. "Where did you get this Kreacher?"
"It was my mistress's."
"Why give it to me?"
"My mistress wanted it to stay in the family. My mistress was going to give it to Miss Ursa for her 16th birthday if my mistress was still alive. My mistress told Kreacher to give it to Miss Ursa if Kreacher ever saw Miss Ursa again."
"Well thank you Kreacher." Ursa takes the necklace out of the box and notices the Black Family Crest engraved on the back as she puts it on. "How does it look?" Ursa asks.
"Miss Ursa looks lovely."
Later at dinner, Sirius notices the necklace. "Where'd you get that necklace?" Sirius asks.
"Kreacher gave it to me." Ursa replies.
"That damned elf-" Sirius starts.
"Relax Sirius. He was just following your mother's orders. She told him to give it to me if he saw me again."
"Really?"
"Yes. Apparently she was going to give it to me for my 16th birthday."
Ursa doesn't leave Grimmauld until nine at night. "How are you getting home?" Hermione asks.
"Knight Bus." Ursa replies. She closes the door behind her and glances around before attempting to transform. She does it successfully and starts flying home.
She smiles internally as she approaches the manor when she sees Draco opened her window for her. She lands and transforms cleanly and starts walking towards her closet. The blue light of a Freezing Charm hits her and the lights of the room turn on. "Draco snitched." Ursa says.
"He did." Narcissa replies. "And you are in so much fucking trouble."
"At least he only told you." Narcissa storms over to Ursa and gets in her face.
"I fucking told you to stop speaking to them or I would tell your father!" Narcissa hisses. "And not to leave like that again."
"He knows I talk to them about school stuff. And I'm surprised you haven't told him yet. I didn't 'leave like that.' I came back."
"Ursa!"
"If you are waiting for an apology you are going to be waiting a very long time! I am not sorry."
"And why not?"
"Because everybody likes me there! I decided I would rather spend Christmas at a place where everyone likes me. A place where I feel welcomed and wanted which is definitely not here."
"Where were you?"
"Weasleys. Are you going to release me from this charm anytime soon?"
"I have not decided yet. I have not decided what to do with you. Were you lying about why the Weasley brat was at the ball?"
"Her name is Ginny and no I wasn't lying. I had no idea she would be there."
"You are not getting any of your presents."
"Like I care." Narcissa goes to Ursa's windows and locks all of them and takes the handles. She walks back over to Ursa and releases her from the Freezing Charm.
"Go to bed. I will deal with you later." Narcissa hisses. Narcissa storms out of Ursa's room and locks the door with magic.
"Well that went better than I expected." Ursa mutters to herself. She pulls the necklace out of her pocket and puts it on her nightstand before going to her closet to change.
