Chapter 17

Once Care of Magical Creatures is over, Ursa doesn't see her friends until Defense Against the Dark Arts. Ursa walks into the classroom, where her friends already are, and sets her bag down at her desk, Draco behind her. Ursa walks up to Umbridge's desk. "Uh oh." Draco says.

"What is she doing?" Hermione asks.

Ursa puts both of her hands on Umbridge's desk. "Yes Miss Malfoy?" Umbridge asks in a sickening sweet tone. "What happened to your hand?"

"I know advanced healing magic." Ursa says before leaning forward. "Now listen here you walking bottle of Pepto-Bismol. It is going to take more than a cursed quill and telling my father to get me to be quiet. I was there that night. And despite what Fudge seems to think, Dumbledore is not forcing me to say anything. I do not fear my father. I do not fear you."

"You should watch what you say." Umbridge replies. "You have no idea what I'm capable of."

"No," Ursa whispers harshly. "You have no idea what I am capable of. I took down a top Durmstrang seventh year last Christmas. My aunt is Bellatrix Lestrange and I am a saner, but just as terrifying version of her. I am a member of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black. Dark magic runs in my blood. Do not. Mess. With me." Ursa turns and storms back to her desk.

"What did you whisper to her?" Draco asks in a whisper.

"Threatened her." Ursa replies in a whisper. "Told her she has no idea what I am capable of. Told her about the Yule Ball. Told her who our aunt is and that we are Blacks and that dark magic runs in our blood."

"You're mad."

"And that's news? Look at 'Warrior' is it really that surprising I'm a little mad. Plus I'm a Dark Witch." Umbridge stands from her desk. "Bear is about to make Sad red." I'm about to make Umbridge mad.

"Sad? That's what we're calling her?" Ursa nods.

"I am articulating in this way therefore it will create zero taste if Sad demands Bear to contribute to the subject." I'm talking in this way so it will make no sense if Umbridge tells me to share with the class. Draco sighs.

"Miss Malfoy?" Umbridge says.

"Yes Professor?" Ursa asks.

"Would you like to share with the class what is so important that you must speak during my class?"

"Sure." Ursa says with a smirk. "I was just telling Draco, 'I am articulating in this way therefore it will create zero taste if Sad demands Bear to contribute to the subject.'"

"That is what you said? I highly doubt that."

"That's more or less what she said." Seamus says.

"I expected you to be the least of my problems Miss Malfoy." Harry and Ron snort and Draco sighs.

"Why the hell would you think that?" Ursa asks.

"I expected you to be quiet and respectful like your mother." Draco and Ursa both hold back laughter. "Like a lady should be." Draco snorts with Harry and Ron this time. Ursa slaps Draco's arm.

"Shut up Ferret." Draco groans and the class snickers. "Obviously your expectations were bloody wrong."

"Obviously they were. No worry. We will fix that quick, and your language. I also expect you to be wearing a skirt tomorrow." Ursa, Draco, Ron, and Harry laugh.

"Good luck with that and with all due respect, Professor, if my mother, who's ire I fear, cannot get me to stop cursing or into a skirt, I highly doubt you can."

"We'll see about that. Maybe your mother is just weak." Ursa shoots out of her chair and into the aisle. Windows shatter and wind blows into the room.

"Do you know what happens to people who insult my mother?" Ursa asks.

"Excuse me?"

"Shut the hell up or you will find out."

"You need to follow the rules Miss Malfoy."

"Well I do not follow rules. I make them."

"Mi-" Ursa draws her wand and her irises go black. Hermione and Draco both jump up to stop her.

"You do not want to push me right now."

"You wouldn't dare."

"It's adorable when you underestimate me."

"Ursa..." Draco warns. Ursa lowers her wand and the wind dies down. Draco gently takes her wand from her while Umbridge scribbles something on a piece of parchment at her desk. She seals it so no one but the recipient can open it.

"Mr Malfoy. Please escort Miss Malfoy to Professor Snape and give him this." Umbridge says as she hands him the note. "Come back right away."

"So leave her with him?" Draco questions.

"Yes." Draco grabs Ursa's arm and drags her to the door. Ursa grabs her bag on their way by.

They walk down the hall in silence until Draco lets go of her and speaks.

"You cannot attack teachers. I know you are protective of our family, especially Mother, but you can't attack people."

"If she only knew sending me to Severus won't do shit." Ursa says.

"You're going to get Father in trouble with the Minister. What if Rita Skeeter get ahold of this information?"

"Then it's a good thing she isn't writing for a year or I'll report her to the Ministry for being an illegal Animagus. And after that year she can't write anything bad about us either."

"Someone else can get ahold of this. Protecting our family includes protecting our reputation and attacking others for insulting us isn't going to help." Ursa sighs as they approach the dungeon stairs and Draco hands her wand back.

"He has class right now."

"How do you know?"

"He gave me his schedule two weeks ago and I memorized it so I know when I can work in the lab." Draco knocks on the door and Snape opens it a few second later.

"Malfoys." Snape says. "Shouldn't you two be in class."

"I was instructed by Professor Umbridge to bring you this note and this idiot." Draco replies as he holds put the note. Ursa glares at Draco and Snape takes the note. Snape opens the note and glances over it. Her looks angrily at Ursa and grabs her arm. He drags her into the classroom and past other students. Her pushes her towards a stool at the front table.

"I will deal with you after class." Snape hisses. "Work on your homework."

"Yes sir." Ursa mumbles. Snape turns and sees everyone staring at them.

"Pay attention to your potions." Snape snaps at the class.

After the bell rings and the class files out, Snape turns to Ursa. "What the hell is wrong with you?! Attacking a teacher and shattering windows for no reason!"

"She insulted my mother!" Ursa exclaims. "You know I can't really control the glass shattering."

"Okay so you kind of had a reason! You can't attack everyone who insults your family! You also cannot threaten teachers." Ursa chuckles and Snape looks at her in confusion.

"I just realized I've threatened the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher two years in a row." Snape sighs.

"You're lucky she's not making you serve detention with her."

"Well her barbaric method didn't work so she  probably thinks you can scare me instead. Or I terrified her by telling her Bella is my aunt and I'm a saner but just as terrifying version of her. And that Dark Magic runs in my blood."

"She also mentioned you speaking nonsense."

"I spoke to Draco in our code on purpose so that when she asked me to share with the class, she couldn't tell what I was saying."

"I don't think your mother is going to stop your father from sending a full Howler."

"I just hope she doesn't send one. Though this letter I'm writing should clear somethings up and make her raise hell at the Ministry."

"You weren't doing homework?"

"No. I needed to get this letter written and hopefully sent before Umbridge sends anything."

"What are you telling her?"

"Why I had my outburst today and about the punishment she gave me yesterday."

"Oh Lord she's going to raise hell over the quill."

"Dumbledore told you?"

"Of course."

Two days later, Ursa gets a reply from Narcissa. "Are you kidding me?" Ursa exclaims.

"What?" Draco questions.

"I told Mother about the quill and she and Father brought it to the Minister's attention. The Minister said he has given Umbridge permission to use almost any means necessary to punish students."

"Let me guess, they are pissed?"

"Yes. Telling me to behave so it doesn't happen again. Though Father threatened to stop funding Fudge if she uses it on me again." Ursa rolls her eyes. "Of course I get in trouble instead of her."

In DADA that afternoon, there is an incessant tap on a window of the classroom. A lot of people look up but not Ursa. "Is that Lyra?" Ron asks and Ursa's head snaps to the window.

"Lyra? Oh great." Ursa groans before getting up and going to the window.

"Sit down Miss Malfoy." Umbridge says.

"Do you want to listen to her tapping for the rest of class because she will not stop until I let her in." Ursa opens the window and Lyra lands on the sill.

"No owls in my classroom."

"Shut up. What's wrong Lyra?" Lyra flaps her wings. "Hippogriffs." Lyra hoots. "Fight. Clawhoof and Hothoof? I thought they were fine." Lyra shakes her head and flaps her left wing.

"Miss Malfoy!"

"Injury. Some hippogriffs got into a fight and one's injured?"

"Miss Malfoy stop acting like you can understand it."

"She can." Hermione says.

"Can it wait?" Ursa asks and Lyra shakes her head. "Alright. Tell Clawhoof I'll be down as soon as possible." Lyra flies away and Ursa closes the window. She runs over to her desk and packs her bag.

"Where do you think you are going Miss Malfoy?" Umbridge asks.

"I am going to help a hippogriff." Ursa replies as she slings her bag over her shoulder. "Someone let McGonagall know if I do not make it to class."

Umbridge locks the door with magic. "You are not going anywhere."

"It's cute you think you can stop me." Ursa unlocks the door with magic and opens the door. She sticks her foot in the way so Umbridge cannot close it before leaving. She walks through the castle and jogs down the grass to the hippogriff pen. She sighs when she sees the gashes across the hippogriff's face and body. Ursa kneels in front of the injured hippogriff and gently reaches for its head. It lets Ursa pet it and Ursa starts using magic to heal it. "What happened?" Ursa hears a hippogriff come up behind her.

"He tried to speak to Hothoof." Clawhoof says and Ursa sighs.

"Was he flirting?"

"No." Both the injured hippogriff and Clawhoof say.

"They you shouldn't have attacked them Clawhoof." Ursa says. "Actually you shouldn't have attacked him in general. You can't attack everyone who speaks to Hothoof."

"Come with me." Clawhoof says.

"Give me a second, I'm almost done." Ursa finishes and follows Clawhoof across the pen. Hothoof is laying in a nest with an egg. "Oh. My... is that a hippogriff egg?"

"Ursa!" Hothoof says.

"Lyra bring me my bag!" Lyra brings Ursa's bag over from the pen's gate. Ursa pulls out a piece of parchment and a pencil. She writes a quick note and hands it to Lyra. "Take this to Dumbledore." Lyra takes it and flies off.

"What was that?"

"Asking Dumbledore to excuse me from Transfiguration cause I'm not going anywhere."

"I told you she was going to stay when she found out."

"So you attacked them for getting to close?" Ursa asks Clawhoof.

"Yes." Clawhoof replies.

"When did this happen?"

"After you left class yesterday." Hothoof replies.

"So a few hours left." Lyra lands on Ursa's shoulder and Ursa takes the note. "Alright he's excusing me and will have Dobby bring me dinner. I will be back in a moment." Ursa goes back to Hagrid's hut and makes some tea. She uses magic to carry the kettle and a small box to the pen and has a wooden stool under her arm. Lyra is holding a tea cup in her talons. Ursa sets the box down and wooden stool down. She holds the kettle by the handle and uses magic to transfigure the box into a side table and the stool into an armchair. Ursa sets the kettle down on the table and Lyra gives her the teacup. Ursa sits in the chair and pours herself some tea. "Now. Please explain what I missed this summer."

After dinner, Professor Grubbly-Plank and Dumbledore come to the hippogriff pen. The baby hippogriff hatched two hours prior and is starting to stand. "Well, this is an interesting sight." Dumbledore says as he sees Ursa's chair.

"I wasn't going to sit on the ground all afternoon." Ursa replies. "It's actually a wooden stool from Hagrid's hut."

"A baby hippogriff." Grubbly-Plank says. "Well it looks like my lesson plans for tomorrow have changed."

"Does that mean people?" Hothoof asks Ursa. "More people around us?"

"Yes." Ursa says. "I will see if I can be down here all day to make sure no one does something stupid."

"What is she-" Grubbly-Plank starts before Dumbledore interrupts her.

"Right. You don't know." Dumbledore says. "Miss Malfoy has the ability to understand magical bird species and magical species that are part bird."

"Oh. That would be why Hagrid wanted her to help."

"Yes." Dumbledore says. One of the other hippogriffs walk towards Clawhoof and Hothoof and Clawhoof growls.

"Okay I think I should move you three to a different pen." Ursa says. "I think the one they built for the abraxan last year is still up."

"It is." Dumbledore says.

"Alright. Once the little one can walk on it's own well enough I'll move them."

"You could carry her." Hothoof says.

"Alright." Ursa carefully walks to the baby and kneels down. She holds out her hand and the baby nuzzles it. "That's it." Ursa carefully picks up the baby. "Oh you're heavier than you look." Clawhoof and Hothoof follow Ursa out of the hippogriff pen and to the empty pen. Ursa carefully sets the baby down and Hothoof checks over her. "Are you two good for the night?"

"Can you bring the nest over?" Hothoof asks.

"I can."

"Other than that yes we are good."

When Ursa goes back to the common room, Draco runs over to her. "Where were you?" He asks. "You missed Transfiguration and dinner."

"You'll see tomorrow." Ursa says. "Now if you'll excuse me, I need to shower."
