Chapter 32: Crouch & Ursa's... friends?
"Barty Crouch Jr." Ursa growls. "No wonder there was glee on your face while demonstrating the Cruciatus Curse directly in front of Longbottom." McGonagall looks at Ursa in confusion, not aware of her history. Barty moves to physically attack Harry and Dumbledore pushes him back into a chair before he can. McGonagall and Ursa both turn their wands on Barty. Barty rolls up his sleeve to show his Dark Mark.
"You know what this means don't you?" Barty says with a dark chuckle. "He's back. Lord Voldemort has returned." Barty turns his attention to Ursa. "Look's like Bella's 'Little Bear' is all grown up. Not so little anymore are we. Look at you pointing your wand at me instead of hiding behind Mama or Auntie like you used to. Surprised to see you on their side."
"Don't you dare speak of my mother or aunt you creep. You are supposed to be dead." Something occurs to Ursa. "You were the informant the Dark Lord spoke of. The one who told him about my eyes and glass shattering around me weren't you? That I was still powerful."
"I was. He was quite happy to find that out."
"Miss Malfoy what is he talking about?" McGonagall asks.
"What, they don't know?" Barty asks Ursa.
"Shut up." Ursa snaps. "You were the 'Crouch' Harry saw on his map in Severus's office. I should have known. You and I have unfinished business."
"We do?"
"You were the one that convinced my aunt to go that night. You took her from me. You broke a two year old."
"Oh boo hoo. She would have been arrested eventually. What oh what would your family say if they could see you now, protecting Potter. You're cowardly father-"
"You would do well not to speak ill of my family." Ursa says as her irises turn black.
"Your bitch of a mother." Ursa jabs her wand closer to his face and he laughs. Various glass bottle around them shatter. "What're you gonna do? Curse me?"
"Just trying to figure out which one will hurt the most and give you a chance to take back what you said."
Snape puts a hand on Ursa's shoulder. "Calm down Ursa." He says.
"Ah, 'Uncle Severus' to my rescue." Barty teases.
"Impulsi!" Ursa casts. Snape restrains her arms as she casts, so her spell just hits the ground between her and Barty.
"Let the dementors deal with him Ursa." Snape says as Ursa violently tries to fight him.
"Let go of me!" Ursa growls. "He called my mother a bitch. He's the reason Auntie left me! Let go!"
"Still a Mummy's girl I see." Barty teases. "And Auntie's."
"That's enough out of you!" Dumbledore snaps at Barty. "Severus take her to my office before she does something she'll regret."
"I won't regret cursing him to insanity!" Ursa yells as Snape drags her out. "Let go!"
"I forget she can be terrifying." Harry says while McGonagall looks at the closed door in shock.
Snape drags Ursa down the hall. "If I let go of you, will you come peacefully?" Snape asks.
"Yes." Ursa replies.
"I'm serious Ursa. Do not try running back there."
"I won't." Snape releases Ursa and she storms in the direction of Dumbledore's office. Snape sighs and follows her. "Don't even fucking start Fawkes." Ursa says as she storms into Dumbledore's office, irises still black. "I'm not in the mood."
"Ursa!" Snape exclaims at her language. Ursa sits in a chair and zones out. She comes back to reality at the sound of the door opening an hour later.
"Not arguing with Fawkes?" Dumbledore questions as he walks in.
"Not in the fucking mood to deal with him." Ursa replies. "I'm irritated, furious, and in pain."
"Ursa stop cursing." Snape says.
"It's alright Severus." Dumbledore says as he sits at his desk. "I would rather her curse to calm down than be destructive. I can tell by your eyes you haven't calmed down."
"Still black?" Ursa asks and Dumbledore nods. "I can't always tell."
"Now how did you know who he was?"
"I recognized him from when I was really young."
"I do not believe that."
Ursa sighs and her irises go back to normal. "I may have been raised in the States, but my father made sure I was raised with the Death Eater rhetoric. My guardian went a step further and educated me in the war and the Death Eaters. I know everyone in the inner circle and what happened to them after the Dark Lord's fall. Who died, who went to Azkaban, who claimed they were under the Imperius Curse, that you're the only reason Severus isn't in Azkaban."
"She's annoyingly smart if you haven't figured that out." Snape says. "Almost as bad as Miss Granger."
"Probably worse than Hermione but you like me so I don't seem as bad." Ursa says.
Dumbledore sighs and looks at Snape. "Severus." He says. "You know what I have to ask you to do... if you're ready."
"I am." Snape says.
"Then good luck."
"I'll come find you when I get back Ursa." Snape says before leaving.
"Please tell me you didn't just send him where I think you did." Ursa says.
"I did." Dumbledore replies and Ursa sighs. "He knows it is what is necessary."
"How's Harry?"
"He will be fine. The bigger question is how are you?"
"Fine I guess. Still pretty sore."
"Well your eyes are back to normal. The pain would be the after effects of the Cruciatus Curse. Now, Harry told me what happened in the graveyard." Ursa groans quietly. "Would you like to explain your behavior there?"
Ursa sighs. "I was trying to avoid getting hurt but that obviously failed."
"And the raised to serve him thing?"
"I was raised to serve him. My guardian believed the rumors that he would rise again and she trained me to be a powerful Death Eater. To be a weapon. It's part of the reason some of my knowledge is beyond my year. I don't actually plan on serving him. Unless I have to in order to protect my family. Harry is my friend. Or at least he was."
"He thinks you were using him."
"I wasn't. I had no idea that Crouch was posing as Mad-Eye or that the Dark Lord had found a way to create a body. Though in retrospect I see the signs of Crouch posing as Mad-Eye.
"How did you get there if you didn't know?"
"No idea. I was watching the tournament and then I was suddenly in the graveyard. I think Crouch disapparated me there and went back before anyone noticed."
"You're lucky you weren't splinched."
"I know."
"What signs did you see?"
"Well I already mentioned the glee demonstrating the Cruciatus Curse in front of Longbottom."
"You know about his parents?"
Ursa nods. "It's why I disarmed him in class. The small amount of glee he had on his face demonstrating the Unforgivable Curses, that tongue thing he does, the constant drinking, I remember the classroom smelling bad a few times. Which I now know was Polyjuice Potion before the final ingredient. Things like that."
There is a whoosh from Dumbledore's fireplace as its flames turn green. "That should be your mother."
Narcissa steps out of the fireplace and Ursa shoots up. She runs over to Narcissa and Narcissa hugs her tightly. "Ow ow." Ursa says as she buries her face in Narcissa's neck.
"Sorry." Narcissa says as she loosens her hug and Ursa cries. "I'm here Cub."
There is a knock at the door. "Come in." Dumbledore says. McGonagall opens the door and Draco pushes past her. He runs over to Ursa and Narcissa and hugs them both.
"I brought Mr Malfoy like you asked." McGonagall says. "Madame Pomfrey would like to look over Miss Malfoy as soon as possible to make sure there aren't any lasting effects of the curse. According to Potter she got it worse than he did."
"Mrs Malfoy, you are welcome to go with her to the hospital wing." Dumbledore says.
Narcissa opens her mouth to snap at him but decides against it. "Thank you." She says. "Come on Cub." Narcissa guides Ursa from the room, Draco behind them. When they get in the hall, Narcissa wraps and arm around Ursa's shoulders and Draco takes Ursa's hand on his side.
"You were about to snap at him weren't you?" Ursa asks.
"Maybe." Narcissa replies.
"I think he knew you were going to come with me whether he said you could or not. Severus has mentioned how protective you are of us."
"Speaking of Severus, where the hell was he when you were taken?"
"Next to me." Draco says. "She was on the other side of me. She just disappeared. He ran down to Dumbledore when she disappeared. She appeared again with Potter."
"What are you wearing Cub?"
"I forgot to change back. I changed to dress robes when I figured out what was going on." Ursa carefully draws her wand and uses it to change back to her original clothes. They all go silent as they see the Weasleys standing outside the hospital wing.
They walk into the hospital wing Madame Pomfrey jogs over to them. "There you are." She says. "Have a seat on the bed next to Mr Potter dear." They walk over to the bed. Ursa glances at the Trio to see them glaring at her. Ursa sits and Narcissa and Draco sit on either side of her. Ursa lays her head on Narcissa's shoulder. "How are you feeing?" Madame Pomfrey waves her wand down Ursa's body, Narcissa watching her closely.
"Still pretty sore." Ursa replies.
"Hm. That's not good. You shouldn't be in pain after an hour."
"He's the most powerful Dark Wizard. Wouldn't it take longer to wear off?"
"You are absolutely right. I want you to stay here until the pain disappears."
"Alright."
"I'll let you three be." Madame Pomfrey walks away.
"What happened?" Narcissa asks quietly. "Why did he have you brought there to hurt?"
"Punishment." Ursa replies.
"To punish-" Narcissa starts before stopping herself.
"They know Mother. Unlike me, Potter was conscious the whole time and probably has told them."
"So to punish your father for not looking for him like... you know."
"Auntie. Yes. They know about her too."
"How?"
"They do not know how to keep their noses in their own business." Hermione draws the curtain between them angrily.
Draco taps Ursa's shoulder and discreetly points at a beetle on the windowsill. "That's Rita Skeeter." He says. "You need to do something."
Ursa discreetly draws her wand and points it at Rita. "Cimi Incasi." A jar appears in Ursa's hand and a magical wind pulls Rita into it. Ursa closes the lid, that has holes it in, and holds the jar up to face level. "Now look who is doing something they shouldn't be." Ursa smirks darkly. "We are going to have fun."
"Why did you just do that?" Narcissa asks.
"That is Rita Skeeter." Draco whispers. "She's an Animagus."
"Interesting." Narcissa replies. "I should probably head home if you are alright. Your father was worry pacing when I left. He has probably worn a path in the sitting room floor by now."
"I'm fine Mother." Ursa replies.
Narcissa kisses Ursa's forehead before standing and kissing Draco's. "Behave. Both of you."
"No promises." Ursa replies.
"She'll behave." Draco says and Narcissa leaves.
"You can go too Dray." Ursa says as she lays down.
"I'm not leaving you."
"Dray, I want to be alone. Plus I may be here all night."
"Alright." Draco kisses Ursa's forehead too before leaving. Once he's gone, Ursa rolls over onto her side, facing the curtain separating her and the Trio. Tears quickly fill her eyes and fall.
Hermione hears Ursa's sniffles as she tries to cry quietly. Hermione peeks around the curtain. "Are you okay?" She asks.
"Why would you care?" Ursa snaps. "I betrayed you right? Pretended to be your friend. That's what you all think now right?"
"Ursa-"
"Just leave me alone. I do not need your pity for what happened tonight. It was stupid of me to think I could ever have friends." Ursa rolls over and Hermione sighs sadly. "I'm destined to be alone." Ursa stops trying to cry quietly and cries herself to sleep.
