Chapter 2: Ursa's Secret

Draco notices Ursa sneaking out at night as well as random cuts and bruises. One night he follows her out but loses her quickly. He looks around and notices a figure on the roof. "Is that..." Draco asks himself.

On the roof, Ursa takes a deep breath and holds her arms out to the side. She closes her eyes and lets herself fall forward. Draco's heart drops as Ursa falls off the roof. Partway down Ursa transforms into a phoenix, except her feathers are shades of green instead of shades of red and orange. She flies through the air, clumsily and narrowly avoiding the trees. Draco runs after her. Ursa doesn't turn in time and hits a tree. She falls to the ground, landing in human form.

     "Ow." She groans.

     "Ursa?" Draco questions.

Ursa scrambles to her feet as she speaks. "Draco! Wh- what are you doing out here?"

Ursa moves closer to Draco and he backs away. "Don't come closer."

"Dray, I'm not dangerous. How much of that did you see?"

     "You falling off the roof."

     "So everything... damn it."

     "How did you do that?"

"I don't know. I have no idea how I do it. It's an instinct I guess. I don't know how to control it... or fly well."

"How did you find out you could do that?"

"When I was eight, Beatrice, the distant relative I was living with, wasn't paying attention to me and I somehow ended up on the roof. She noticed me near the edge and yelled my name which scared me and I fell. I transformed partway down and managed to fly a few feet before crashing into the ground. I hit my head and didn't remember it."

"So what did you turn into?"

     "A phoenix."

     "But you were green."

"I know. I think it has something to do with my middle name. Mother told her it came to her in a dream when she was pregnant with me. You cannot tell anyone about this. At least not until I figure out what I am."

"Jade? Came to her in a dream?"

"Look at other wizarding families. Firstborns girls usually get their mother's name as their middle name and same for the first boy. My middle name should technically be Narcissa."

"So the cuts and bruises I've seen..."

"Tree branches and crashes that I forgot to heal."

"Wait if you forgot, did you fall again and find out?"

"No Beatrice told me when she gave me my wand. At Ilvermorny you usually get your wand at the school after you're sorted but Beatrice took me to a wandmaker to find my wood type and then secretly had them make my wand. Mine is special."

     "What makes it special?"

"The core is a phoenix feather. One of my feathers. I shed one when I fell and Beatrice convinced the wandmaker to use it as my wand core. My wand is fiercely loyal to me. No one else can use it well if at all. You should probably get back inside. Make sure to use 'Finite Tempus' before opening the door if you don't want to set off the Intruder Charm. Learned that one the hard way."

     "How and why 'Tempus?'"

"The first time I went out to practice I set it off. Luckily Mother bought the excuse that I was going to take a walk because I couldn't sleep. 'Tempus' means 'temporary.' Makes it so you don't have to put it back up yourself."

"How do you get up on the roof?"

"A plank of wood and 'Ascendio.'"

     "Are you coming in too?"

"No, I'm going to fly a little more."

***

"Have you noticed anything different about you? Like from other witches and wizards?" Draco asks from Ursa's couch.

     "Like what?" Ursa asks.

     "I don't know."

"I mean can others feel how far away their wand is from them?"

     "Nope."

"Might be because there's a literal piece of me in my wand. Until I know what I am, I'll have no idea if there are other different things unless I notice them." Ursa plops on the couch. "I've checked all the books in the library."

"Father keeps the rarer books in his office."

"Which I assume is still off-limits?"

     "Yep"

"Great." Ursa's voice drips with sarcasm.

***

Ursa yelps as she falls to the floor. She flips over and sees Draco. "What the hell Dray?" Ursa grabs her wand as she gets up and shoots a spell back at him. They cast spells back and forth, Ursa's anger growing. Suddenly a vase shatters. "Uh oh"

"What do we do?" Draco asks.

"Ummm Reparo." The vase repairs itself and goes back to the pedestal it was on. "There. It's fixed. No one will ever know." Ursa looks back at Draco to see him looking behind her with slight fear and Ursa sighs. "Mother is behind me isn't she?"

"Yes I am." Narcissa says. "Wands, now."

     Ursa spins around. "Hello."

"Wands. Both of you." Narcissa states

"Yes Mother." Ursa hands Narcissa her wand while Draco walks up and does the same. "We are grounded aren't we?"

"Yes you are. For two weeks."

"I want it to be known that no spells hit the vase."

***

Ursa reads as she walks down the hall. "Can't wait to get my damn wand back and practice this." Ursa says to herself. She turns a corner and runs into someone, causing her to drop her book. Ursa picks her book back up and groans as she lost her place. She looks at who she ran into only to realize she has no idea who this person is.

"Well hello there." The person says creepily as they back Ursa into a wall.

     "W-who are you?" Ursa asks.

     "Who are you?"

"T-that's none of your business. What are you- what are you doing?"

     "Just looking at a pretty-"

"Scabior!" Lucius yells as he grabs the person and pulls them away from Ursa. "She is 14 for fucks sake!" Ursa's eyes widen at hearing Lucius say "fuck." Lucius looks at Ursa. "Do not tell your mother I said that word."

"Said what word Father?" Ursa replies with a fake confused face.

     "Good girl."

     "Mercenary?"

"Yes a stupid one." Lucius drags Scabior to his study by his collar. "That is my daughter you bloody idiot."

Ursa chuckles before going upstairs she pops her head into Draco's room. "You will never believe what I just heard." She says.

     "What?" Draco asks

     "Father saying 'fuck'"

     "Seriously?" Draco laughs.

"Yep. One of the mercenaries is here and apparently he thought I was older than I am. Kinda a creepy guy."

"I know exactly which one you're talking about just based on you saying he's creepy."

"Yeah well he backed me into a wall. Luckily Father caught him before he could do anything. Actually yelled 'She is 14 for fucks sake!' I don't know how old that creep thought I was."

"He's definitely getting paid less for whatever he's here for."

"Don't tell Father I told you that or Mother that he said 'fuck'."

"I think he knows you were going to tell me. We tell each other everything."

"Of course I do. You're my best friend."

     "I'm your only friend."

"Nuh uh. I have Lyra." Draco rolls his eyes.

***

"Did they really leave us home alone?" Ursa asks.

"Well Mother is only going to be gone for a few hours." Draco replies.

"Then we get our wands back and I can practice flying again.

"You know, you could probably use a tower to get up onto the roof."

"Good idea." Ursa stands. "I'm gonna try." Ursa goes back inside and Draco sees her on the roof a few minutes later. She falls and transforms. She lands on her feet but trips over her foot, a few feet from Draco. He laughs and Ursa looks up at him. She points her hand at him. "Verdimillious." Green sparks shoot from her fingertips and hit Draco.

"Ow, what was th- wait how did you do that?" Draco asks.

"Did I forget to mention I can do a small amount of weak wandless magic?"

     "Yes. How the hell?"

"Between you and me. Beatrice believed the rumors that the Dark Lord will return and trained me to be a powerful Death Eater. Including wandless magic."

     "Bitch."

     "Ass."

"Bite me." They stare at each other until Ursa sticks out her tongue and they both laugh.

***

"You're going to do what?" Draco exclaims. "Are you mad?"

"Dray there's a chance a book with the answers could be in there." Ursa says. "He'll be gone for two hours."

"You'll be in a lot of trouble if you get caught."

     "Oh well."

"Ursa getting in trouble with him isn't just a timeout or getting yelled at like when we were young. He uses magic."

     "Really?"

"It really does discourage me from misbehaving."

"And Mother lets him get away with it?"

"Only when she doesn't find out. They usually fight for a bit if she catches him."

"Why don't you just tell her when it happens?"

     "It doesn't leave a trace."

"It's a risk I have to take. Besides. It can't be as bad as what Beatrice did."

"Fine, but I'm not saving your ass if you get caught."

Once Lucius leaves, Ursa goes downstairs and to the study. She casts two spells, the first to remove and charms on the door. "Finite, Alohomora." The lock clicks and she opens the door. She quietly closes the door behind her and goes over to the bookshelf. She scans the spines until she finds a relevant one. She gets distracted and doesn't pay attention to the time. She looks at the time and curses. "Shit. I need to get out of here." She replaces the book and runs to the door. She opens it to find Lucius standing there.

"What do you think you are doing?" Lucius asks.

     "Crap" Ursa mumbles.

He steps into the room and closes the door behind him. He backs her deeper into the room. "Just what do you think you are doing in here?"

"I-I was looking at your books." Ursa replies.

"What book were you looking at?"

"I do not know, I put it back."

"This room is off-limits. You know this." Ursa starts to shake as her back hits Lucius's desk. "Ah, you are scared. Did Draco tell you how I handle punishments?"

Ursa nods. "Beatrice did it too."

Lucius draws his wand and pushes the tip into the side of her neck. Ursa's body seizes as he shoots a hex through her body, any noises being quieted by another spell.

When Ursa had not returned soon before Lucius was supposed to return, Draco goes downstairs and keeps an eye on the study door from the stairs. He goes back upstairs when he sees Lucius. He quickly walks across the manor to the furthest set of stairs. He runs downstairs and searches for Narcissa. He finds her in the tea room. "Mother? Ursa was looking at books in the study and Father just caught her."

Narcissa sighs and sets down her tea. She stands and walks towards the study, Draco trailing her. Narcissa opens the door and Lucius releases Ursa from the spell. Ursa falls to the floor and Draco jogs over to her. He helps her up while Narcissa speaks. "What is going on here?"

"I caught her sneaking around in here." Lucius replies.

     "Children go upstairs."

"Yes Mother." Ursa and Draco both reply. Draco gently takes Ursa's hand and pulls her out. Neither of them speak until they are upstairs.

"What happened to 'I'm not saving your ass if you get caught'?" Ursa asks.

     "Bitch" Draco says.

     "Ass"

"Bite me." Ursa turns her head and sticks her tongue out at him, causing them both to laugh. "Did you find anything?"

"No, he doesn't have much on magical creatures and beings."

Ursa jumps as Narcissa raises her voice. "You okay?" Draco asks.

"Yeah. Don't think I've ever heard her yell before."

"She'll probably get quiet in a moment. That's how you know she's pissed."

     "Do they fight often?"

"No. It's usually short and about parenting when they do. Father is bad at parenting with love like Mother. He's used to force like their parents did."

"Why does he do that if he loves us?"

"As I said. It's just what he knows. Mother said it took her a lot of work to get him to where he is. His father used the Cruciatus Curse. So was it as bad as Beatrice?"

"That was equivalent of a minor punishment."
