Chapter 12: Fireworks, Champion Selection, & Ferrets

Draco hands Ursa the paper as she sits down. "Oh what now?" Ursa groans. She takes it and reads it aloud. "'Mystery Girl of Malfoy Manor Identified! A confidential source has informed us that the Mystery Girl is named Ursa Malfoy and is the daughter of Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy and older sister to their son Draco. But why was she hidden? Is she adopted? I have so many questions.' Do I really want to read the rest?"

     "Up to you." Draco replies.

     "Is it bad?"

"A little. Rita Skeeter wrote it."

"Let's see... 'My theories: she was recently adopted. Been hidden or sent away for shame.' I mean... 'Secretly a child of You-Know-Who.' Seriously?! How the hell does she come up with these?"

"I mean you don't look like us and you do kinda look like him, hair wise."

"You know I look more like Mother's family Dray." Ursa scans the rest of the article. "'But my biggest question is if they were hiding her, why did they stop?' I don't know maybe cause I got expelled from Ilvermorny."

"Our parents aren't going to be happy."

"At least it's not my fault. 'What we know for sure: Her name is Ursa Malfoy, she is enrolled in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as a fourth year and was sorted into Slytherin (the hat barely touched her head). Also Quidditch star Viktor Krum has seemed to take a liking to her.' God why me? Why?" Ursa groans and puts her head on the table.

"It's part of being a member of a high profile wizarding family. Hey once the tournament drawing is done all eyes will be on the champions. You just need to behave."

"Me? Not behaving?" Ursa says with fake offense causing Draco to roll his eyes and both of them to laugh. Ursa sighs as Lyra in front of her. "Speaking of angry parents." Ursa takes the letters and candies from Lyra. "Thank you Lyra." Lyra hops up onto Ursa's shoulder. "Oh one from each." Ursa quickly scans them.

     "What do they say?"

"Basically they saw the article. Mother asked me to behave and Father told me to behave. Also Mother asking how our first day was." Ursa rolls her eyes before tossing a candy at Draco. Draco just smirks. "Shut up. She probably jinxed them, that's the only reason I'm sharing."

"Why would I want jinxed candy?"

"No I mean if I ate them both I would get jinxed."

     "Probably true."

Ursa notices people are staring and pointing at her. "Ugh, I'm being stared at."

"Well you do have an owl on your shoulder, plus the events of yesterday's DADA class and the article."

"It's not my fault Lyra and I are as close as a human and owl can get. She was my only friend." Lyra nuzzles her head against Ursa's. "I love you too." Ursa smirks. "Might as well give them something to stare at."

"What are you going to do?

"Lyra, Owlery." Lyra flies off and Ursa digs in her bag for a small ball.

"What is that?" Draco asks as she sets it on the table. Ursa ignores him and pulls out ink and a thin tipped quill. She spends a few minutes writing on the ball before blowing it dry. "Ursa..."

"Oh come on. Let me have my fun." Ursa puts the quill and ink away. She holds her left hand out and puts the ball in the palm of it. She draws her wand and points it at the ball. "Incendio. Ascendio."

The ball lights up and flies above them. It explodes, spelling out "It is not nice to stare" in fireworks. The fireworks disperse across the room and explode. One goes up to Harry and turns into a face. It blows raspberries at him before disappearing. Draco and Ursa both laugh.

     "This is amazing." Draco says.

"I know." Ursa says as she watches the teachers try to stop it. Ursa sighs as they manages to. "Well I didn't get that part right if they stopped it."

McGonagall and Dumbledore go up to the Weasley twins, who are sitting behind Ursa. "Detention both of you." McGonagall says.

     "But-" Fred starts.

     "No buts."

"Professors?" Ursa says and Dumbledore and McGonagall turn around. "It was not them."

Snape walks up to them with an annoyed look on his face and his arms crossed. "Miss Malfoy." He says.

     "Hello." Ursa says innocently.

"As much as I would enjoy seeing those two in detention... it was not them." Snape says.

"Who else would it be?" McGonagall asks as Ursa slips away.

"It was-" Snape starts before he is interrupted by clapping. The teachers turn to see Ursa bowing on the dais. "Miss Malfoy. It was Miss Malfoy."

Ursa notices the teachers walking to her. "Ursa run!" Draco yells.

"I am not going to run. That would get me in more trouble." Ursa replies as she steps off the dais and meets the teachers.

"How did you know it was her?" McGonagall asks.

"She is my goddaughter if you recall." Snape says. "I know she knows how to do enchantments and runes and likes the occasional pyrotechnics. It was too advanced for the Weasleys."

"He is not wrong." Ursa says.

"If it was to advanced for the Weasleys wouldn't it be too advanced for her?" McGonagall asks.

"I have been doing enchantments and runes since I was six." Ursa replies.

"And just why did you set off fireworks in the Great Hall?" Dumbledore asks.

"People were staring at me because of the article and yesterdays DADA class, so I gave them something to stare at." Ursa replies.

"This is a warning. Now go sit down."

"Yes sir." Ursa walks back to the table and sits.

"So how much trouble are you in?" Draco asks.

"None." Ursa replies. "Just a warning. Though I'll probably get something from our parent tomorrow."

***

Ursa walks down an empty hallway. A second year starts down it and tries to run away when they see her. They trip over their untied shoelaces and fall. Ursa runs over to them. "There is no need to be afraid of me." Ursa says as she helps them to their feet. She picks up their books and hands them to them. "Here."

"T-thanks." The second year stammers out.

"You should tie your shoes." Ursa suggests.

     "I- I didn't notice."

"Maybe she isn't like her family." Hermione thinks to herself.

***

"Sit down please!" Dumbledore yells as everyone gathers in the Great Hall for the Champion Selection. "Now the moment you've all been waiting for. The Champion Selection." Dumbledore approaches the goblet and the flames turn res. A name shoots out of the flames and the flames turn blue again. Dumbledore grabs the name and reads it aloud. "The Durmstrang champion is... Viktor Krum!" The Durmstrang crowd cheers and everyone else claps. Viktor walks to the front of the room as the flames turn red again. Another name shoots out before the flames fade back to blue. "The champion from Beauxbatons is... Fleur Delacour!" The Beauxbatons crowd cheers as Fleur walks up to the front. The flame turns red and the goblet shoots out a name for the final time. "And the Hogwarts champion is... Cedric Diggory!" The Hogwarts crowd cheers as Cedric walks to the front. "Excellent! Now we have our three champions! But in the end, only one will go down in history. Only one will win this chalice of champions, this vessel of victory, the Tri-Wizard Cup!" People clap and cheer. The goblet's flames turn red again and the cheers turn to gasps and whispers.

"What's going on?" Ursa whispers to Draco.

     "No idea." He replies.

One more name shoots out and Dumbledore catches it. His face turns grim. "Harry Potter. Harry Potter? Harry Potter!" Dumbledore yells.

Hermione shoves Harry. "Go on Harry. Harry for goodness sake." Hermione says. Harry slowly walks up and Dumbledore hands him the paper. Voices in the crowd shout out, including Draco.

"He's a cheat! He's not even seventeen yet!"

***

"Why so tense Potter?" Draco asks from the tree him and Ursa are sitting in.

"Leave him alone Dray." Ursa says with a sigh.

"Our father and I have a bet you see. I don't think you're gonna last ten minutes in this tournament." Draco says before Ursa kicks him out of the tree. He lands on his feet and she jumps down behind him. "He disagrees. He thinks you won't last FIVE.

"Draco Malfoy! Shut up." Ursa growls.

"I don't give a damn what you or your father thinks Malfoy. He's vile and cruel and you're just pathetic." Harry says.

"Watch it Potter!" Ursa snaps. "I may be nicer than my brother, but that does not mean I will let you speak ill of our family. This is your one warning. I know plenty of curses and how to keep them from being traced back to me."

Harry turns around and walks away. Draco angrily tries to draw his wand and cast a spell. Moody appears. "Oh no you don't sonny!" He says as he casts a spell and Draco turns into a ferret. "I'll teach you to cast when someone's back is turned." Ursa laughs at Draco but stops when Moody starts controlling Draco.

"Turn my brother back now!" Ursa demands.

"Professor Moody!" McGonagall yells as she runs over. "What are you doing?"

     "Teaching." Moody replies.

"Is that a student?" McGonagall asks.

     "Technically it's a ferret."

"That's Draco, Professor." Ursa tells McGonagall. "Turn him back please!"

Moody makes ferret Draco go down the front of Crabbe's pants. Draco tries to climb out but just falls. "Stand still. Stand still!" Goyle says as he tries to get Draco out. He yanks his hand back when Draco bites it. Ursa holds back a chuckle at that. Draco comes out of the bottom of Crabbe's pants and McGonagall turns him back.

Draco turns around to face Moody. "My father will hear about this!" Draco yells.

"Is that a threat!" Mood yells as he hobbles after Draco.

"Leave him alone." Ursa yells at Moody.

     "Professor Moody!" McGonagall yells.

"Is that a threat?!" Moody repeats. Draco runs away and Moody shouts after him. "I could tell you stories about your father that would curl even your greasy hair boy! It doesn't end here!"

Ursa steps up to Moody. "Leave him alone and watch what you say about our family or else. That," Ursa adds a short pause for emphasis and a crack appears in a nearby window. "Was a threat!"

"Miss Malfoy we do not threaten teachers!" McGonagall exclaims.

"Whatever." Ursa turns to Harry. "Remember what I said Potter." Ursa jogs after Draco. "Are you alright?" She asks when she finds him.

"Yeah, no thanks to you." Draco replies.

"What was I supposed to do?"

     "Stop him? Change me back?"

     "How?"

     "You disarmed him before."

"No wonder you're failing Transfiguration. Disarming him would have only stopped him from controlling you."

     "I am not failing!"

***

"Are you sure she's your sister?" Pansy asks Draco as they watch Ursa studying on a bench in the courtyard.

"Some days I question it." Draco replies.

"Do you ever not question it?"

"When someone pisses her off. You think our aunt is scary, you don't want to see Ursa angry."

"I can't see her getting that angry."

"Do you remember the loud argument in the Training Grounds last week? With the shattered windows that sent a few people to the Hospital Wing?"

     "That was her?" Pansy asks

"Yeah. Not entirely sure how she broke the windows since she didn't cast anything."

     "What got her that angry?"

"Someone insulted our family in front of her, specifically our mother."

Ursa speaks without turning around. "Stop talking about me Dray."

"Does she have super hearing?" Pansy asks.

"I swear she's not human." Draco jokes.

     "Why is her hair different?"

"Our mother's family all had dark hair. As for the red, she dyed it one year the Muggle way and has kept it up with a spell."

"Why does she get to call you 'Dray' but you yelled at me when I did?"

"Because it's always been her nickname for me. Only her and our mother can call me that."

***

"So as part of yer project, yeh'll be comin' down here on some evenin's to observe the Skrewts and make notes on their behavior." Hagrid says during one class.

"I will not!" Draco objects. "I see enough of these foul things during class."

"Yeh'll do wha' yer told." Hagrid growls. "Or I'll be takin a page out of Professor Moody's book. I heard yeh make a good ferret, Malfoy." The Gryffindors and Ursa burst out laughing. Draco goes red and glares at Ursa.

     "What?" Ursa asks.

     "Don't laugh at me."

"I will laugh at you if I please. That reminds me, I want to ask Professor Moody or McGonagall to teach me that spell."

***

"What are you doing?" Snape asks as he walks into his classroom to see Ursa sitting at a table.

"Studying." Ursa replies without looking up. "I figured everyone else is too scared of you to come in here, so it would be quiet."

"And you're not scared of me?"

"Nope. I know you can be a softy."

     "Oh really?"

"I've seen you smile and laugh. You can't make me scared of you."

     Snape rolls his eyes. "Out."

     "Fine." Ursa says.
