Chapter 11: Moody's First Class

The bell rings and Ursa goes up the stairs. Other students slowly file in and Ursa puts her bag on the seat next to her.

Lavender Brown tries to move her bag. "Do not touch my bag." Ursa says

"You can't save seats." Lavender replies.

     "Watch me."

Draco walks up to the two. "Do you need something? No? Then go away." Draco says to Lavender. She glares at both of them before walking away. Ursa moves her bag and Draco sits down next to her. "What was she doing?"

"Trying to tell me I can't save a seat." Ursa replies.

"How did you know I would sit by you?"

"You did in History of Magic and I know Mother told you to keep an eye on me. Probably told Severus to also."

Draco takes his book out as everyone hears Moody clunking his way down the corridor. "You won't need those books. Just put them away." Moody says as he walks in. He walks up to the front of the room and writes on the blackboard. He repeats what he writes aloud. "Alastor Moody." He continues. "Your Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher for the year. I'm here cause Dumbledore asked me end of story." He takes out a register. He reads down the list, his normal eye going down the list while his magical eye looks at the students. "Malfoy, Draco."

     "Here." Draco says.

"Malfoy... Ursa." Moody looks up with his normal eye too.

"Here." Ursa says and Moody looks at her with both eyes for a few seconds.

Moody finishes the list. "Right then. Your last teacher left me a letter of what you did and it seems you're behind in dealing with curses. When it comes to the Dark Arts, I believe in the practical approach. But first, which of you can tell me how many Unforgivable Curses are there?"

"Three sir." Hermione says without raising her hand.

"And they are so named?" Moody asks.

"Because they are unforgivable. The use of any one of them will..." Hermione trails off.

"Earn you a one-way ticket to Azkaban. Correct. I believe some of you in this room have family that learned that the hard way."

Ursa leans over and whispers to Draco. "He's talking about us isn't he?"

"And a couple others." Draco whispers back.

"Now, the Ministry says you're too young to see what these curses do but I say different." Moody says. "You need to know what you're up against! You need to be prepared. So, which curse should we see first? Weasley!"

     Ron flinches. "Yes..." He says.

"Stand." Ron stands. "Give us a curse."

"Well, my dad did tell me about one, the Imperius Curse."

"Oh, yeah, your father would know all about that. Gave the Ministry quite a bit of grief a few years ago. I'll show you why." Moody pops open a jar with a spider inside it. "Hello, what a beauty." He picks up the spider and holds it in his palm. "Engorgio, Imperio." Moody forces it onto the desk in front of him and around the room. "Don't worry." The spider jumps of Crabbe's head. "Completely harmless." It jumps to another desk and runs up a girl's arm before it hovers over Ron. "If she bites." Ron starts whimpering. "She's lethal." It lands on Ron's head and Draco starts laughing loudly. "What are you laughing at?" It jumps over to Draco's face and he start whimpering while Ursa just laughs at him.

     "Get it off!" Draco whines.

"Talented isn't she? What should I have her do next? Jump out the window? Drown herself?" The room goes quiet as he holds the spider over a bucket and it wriggles. He brings it back to his hand. "Scores of witches and wizards have claimed they only did You-Know-Who's bidding under the influence of the Imperius Curse."

Ursa leans over and whispers to Draco again. "Us again?"

"And 'Idiots 1 and 2'." Draco whispers back, using their code to identify Crabbe and Goyle.

"But here's the rub, how do we sort out the liars." Moody looks at the Malfoys for a few seconds. "Another... another. Come on. Come on." Multiple people raise their hands and Neville slowly raises his. "Longbottom is it? Up."

Neville slowly stands. "There's the um..." Neville says nervously. "The Cruciatus Curse."

     "Correct. Correct."

"Of course Longbottom knows that one. That's what 'Warrior' and the rest of 'The Loyal Four'  used on his parents." Draco whispers to Ursa, using their code to identify Bellatrix and Rodolphus, Rabastian, and Barty Crouch Jr..

"Come, come." Moody motions for Neville to follow him. Moody sets the spider down on the table. "Particularly nasty. The torture curse. Crucio!" The spider wriggles in pain and squeals. Neville starts shaking and breathing heavily.

"Stop it! Can't you see it's bothering him?" Hermione says.

"Stop it!" Ursa yells as she stands and grabs her wand. She nonverbally disarms Moody before anyone can stop her and a window cracks. Neville looks disturbed and the class looks at Ursa or Moody in shock. Moody summons his wand back to himself before looking at Ursa, whose wand is still pointed at him.

"Disarming a teacher, eh Miss... Malfoy wasn't it?" Moody says.

Ursa lowers her wand. "Ursa Malfoy. It was clearly bothering him and you would not stop." Ursa says confidently.

"You seem brave for a little girl."

"You should be careful. The last person to call me 'little' ended up with a pig's tail for three days."

     "Three days eh?"

"Took our parents that long to convince me to get rid of it, after trying themselves." Everyone looks towards Draco and giggles or chuckles. Draco turns red and slumps in his seat. Moody picks up the spider which is still making a little noise and walks towards Ursa. She sits and he sets it in front of her.

"Maybe you can give us the last Unforgivable Curse Miss Malfoy."

     "The Killing Curse sir."

"Correct. Avada Kedavra." A green bolt shoots from his wand and the spider flips over and dies. Everyone in the room except Ursa flinches. "Only one person is known to survive it." Moody picks up the spider and walks back to the front. "and he's sitting in this room."

Moody drops the dead spider on the front desk and turns around. "Now! Does anyone want to try to resist the Imperius Curse." The room stays silent and everyone tries to keep their eyes for meeting either of Moody's. "You'll all have to sometime this term." Moody turns to Ursa. "How about you Miss Malfoy? Put that bravery to the test. See if your will is stronger than your father's."

     Ursa rolls her eyes. "Fine."

"Stand then." Ursa stands and steps into the aisle. "Imperio." Moody moves his wand and Ursa crosses her arms.

     "Was something supposed to happen?"

"What the- how did you- how did you do that?"

"How did I do what?" Ursa asks in fake innocence.

"Resist the curse that easily. I was in control for two seconds."

"I guess my will is stronger than my father's." Ursa smirks before sitting down.

"How did you do that?" Draco whispers.

     "I'll explain later." Ursa replies.

"Now, the Killing Curse is a curse that needs a bit of power behind. You could all get out your wands and try it on me and say the words and I doubt I get worse than a nosebleed." Ursa snorts. "Something to say Miss Malfoy?

"I think you would get worse than a nosebleed from me. Yes you have to mean it for it to work but you also need to be powerful."

"and you think you are powerful enough?"

     "I know I am."

After class, Draco and Ursa walk together towards Herbology. "Did you notice Moody looked at us after mentioning the Imperius Curse?" Ursa asks.

"I mean 'Light' was one of the people who claimed to be under it." Draco says, using their code to identify Lucius.

"He wasn't." Ursa says under her breath before talking normally. "I already do not like him. He should know about the Longbottoms and 'The Loyal Four.'" The code for Bellatrix, Rodolphus, Rabastian, and Barty Crouch Jr. "Wasn't he one of the Aurors that captured them? He should have known it would effect Longbottom."

"Yes he was and Longbottom's a wimp."

     "Dray, you are a wimp."

     "Am not!"

"So that was not you screaming like a little girl when he put that spider on your face?"

     "He said it was lethal!"

"If it bit you. He was controlling it! And you are not scared of me?"

"Of course not." Ursa takes a step towards Draco and he flinches back, causing her to laugh. "Bitch."

     "Ass."

     "Bite me."

"Oh look there's Longbottom. Im going to make sure he's okay." Ursa walks away before Draco can respond. "Neville Longbottom right?"

Neville turns around and then steps back in fear. "P-please don't hurt me." Neville stammers.

"I was not going to. I just wanted to make sure you were okay. I saw it was bothering you so I disarmed him."

     "I-I'm fine."

     "Are you sure?"

"Leave him alone Malfoy." Ron says as he walks up to them. "Hasn't your brother done enough over the years." Ursa rolls her eyes and walks back to Draco.

"Are you okay Neville? Did she hurt you?" Hermione asks.

"Yeah. She... she was just seeing if I was okay." Neville replies.

"Wait she was checking on you?" Harry asks confused.

"Yes." Neville says before scampering away.

"There is something weird about that girl. She didn't even flinch when the Killing Curse was used in front of her. Even I flinched and I was on the other side of the room." Hermione says.

"Well that went well." Draco says when Ursa gets to him.

"Shut up." Ursa says as they start walking again.

"Alright how did you resist the Imperius Curse that easily?"

"In the States, even though we didn't and still don't know exactly what I am, we knew I was powerful. I've been training to resist the Imperius Curse and in Occlumency since I was eight or nine in case someone tried to use me. Hopefully I won't ever have to use that training."

     "Powerful?"

"Dray I made a man let go of Mother and threw him across the street before I was two. I could make a wax stick color inside the lines while I colored with another stick in my hand before I was two. I accidentally shattered a mirror when I found out 'Warrior' was arrested. I could levitate and move things with my mind when I was barely three. I could make it snow above me by wiggling my fingers when I was barely five. I've been doing runes and enchantments since I was six. I'm a very powerful witch. Even 'Death'," Voldemort, "said it himself."

     "Death?"

     "Leader of 'DE'."

"Right. I forgot you went to a few of those meetings."

"Yeah well when Mother is as protective as she is, there were very few people other than our parents we were allowed to be left with and two of them were in those meetings.

"I noticed you didn't flinch when he killed that spider."

"You act like it's the first time I've seen that curse used in that way."

     "What?"

"Dray, Beatrice is a Dark Witch. It's how she killed bugs and small pests. I did every once in a while too. It's very good target practice."

"Did she ever kill anyone? Did you ever kill anyone?"

"No I didn't. If she did it wasn't in front of me."

"God Ursa. So I was thinking about last night and I think the difference is that you were already away from home so it wasn't as hard."

"Maybe, I've already heard one rumor today."

     "What would that be?"

"Well given we are Blacks, I assume you can figure out the rest."

     "Ew."

A spider crosses their path and Ursa stops Draco. She points her wand at it and whispers. "Avada Kedavra."

Draco flinches. "You know you could have just used a different spell."

Ursa shrugs and another spider crawls by. "Apparently this school has a spider problem." Ursa hits the spider with another spell and it dies. "See, good target practice." Draco rolls his eyes and they keep walking. Neither of them noticed the Trio behind them.

"Did you see that first spell?" Hermione asks the boys. "It looked exactly like Professor Moody's Killing Curse."
