chapter nine: E

Max and I were talking until eventually he told me to be quiet. It took me longer than I care to admit, to realize that he was listening to the others talk below us.
"They think we left." Max stated.
"Should we go down there?" I asked peering over the edge.
"We're not done up here though." I looked back at him and recalled our conversation about the island.
"What else do you want to know?"
"I would like to know why you left in the first place."
"Wouldn't you? I don't want to marry the girl they set me up with. I don't even want to be king. My parents keep telling me that it's an honor and that I should be proud,  but being out here is the first time I've ever actually lived in the 20 years that I've been alive. There's never even been any room for mistakes."
"So what are you going to do?"
"Well when I leave here I won't go back. Running around the world barefoot is a better option if you ask me." He smiled and it surprised me. I didn't understand why he was smiling all I said was that I wouldn't be going back. He seemed so delighted by that.
He walked over to the edge. The last thing he said was follow me then he jumped off the edge. I watched as he landed on his feet unharmed.
"Here goes nothing." I whispered as I jumped off too. I felt like I was falling very slowly. I didn't feel scared I actually felt at peace. Almost like flying. However my moment was ended with a sudden thud that told me that I forgot that I would hit something eventually.
I cringed as I shifted to my side and stood up. I don't know how Max did that but he did. The others stared at me. Sam looked both pissed and shocked, May looked kind of proud, and Amber looked really happy. I smiled nervously and looked away as Max walked up to Amber and kissed her good morning.
As peoples expressions shifted, I got the feeling that nothing would ever be the same.
