6 - Den Engel
"Lord, what fools these mortals be!"
-William Shakespeare
After her post-training shower, Lisa changed her clothes again. Most of her hair had completely fallen loose from her bun and she decided to just let it loose. Lisa had brought a sandwich from the kitchen to the library, she was starving.
She just sat down when Anna came in, she also had a sandwich and sat down in silence next to Lisa. They often read together here. Usually they said nothing to each other when they read, as an unspoken agreement. So they read their book silently, even though they would normaly never stop talking when they were together. Lisa loved reading, just like Anna.
Back in the days when she still lived with her mother, she was often alone, with only books as her friends. That sounds very pathetic, but it was the truth. Lisa just wanted to ask Anna what book she was reading when Jonathan barged in.
"Lisa! Something happened in Cafe Den Engel, we have to go there right now!"
"Always nice to see you Jonathan," Anna said, not looking up from her book. Jonathan glanced at his sister and then focused back on Lisa.
"They said something about werewolves, demons and a dead person. It was all rather vague," he said nervously. Lisa's eyesbrows furrowed as she traded glances with Anna. She put her book down and got up.
"Okay, we have to go there as soon as possible."
"I'm coming too." Anna got up, her face twisted in pain.
"No, you're staying here. Your leg is still not healed," Lisa said severely.
"Lisa and I can do this on our own." Jonathon playfully prodded Lisa's side with his elbow, she rolled with her eyes. Anna dropped herself back in the chair.
"Are you warning mom and dad?"
"We are gonna need to see what the situation is first," Jonathan said with a smile, "if someone really is dead, we will warn mom and dad." He walked to the door, Lisa gave Anna another wink and walked to Jonathan.

Cafe Den Engel was a small pub on the Sint-Jacobs market. Usually, there were mundanes, but sometimes you could also encounter wolves there and if you are "lucky" even a pixie, some sort of fey. There was another cafe named Den Engel, on the Great Market Square, but there were not exactly so many downworlders, since there were tourists all over the place.
When Lisa and Jonathan arrived, they were immediately approached by a man, who had been sitting on a chair in front of the door.
"Ah, you are finally there, that took a while." The man had long brown hair, a beard, blue eyes and was obviously a werewolf. He wore a red T-shirt with a grey sweater. His face was as red as a tomato, he had bloodshot eyes with a frenzied gaze. Lisa smelled alcohol on his breath.
"Did you call us?" asked Jonathan surprised.
"Yes, that's what I said!" He made a wide hand gesture.
"You said something about demons and a dead person?" asked Lisa suspiciously.
"Yes, indeed. I came out and suddenly I saw a bright, red flash! It looked like a meteor, the light burned my eyes." The man pointed to his eyes.
"Okay... And you said something about a dead person?" she repeated.
"A dead person? No, no one died," he paused and looked at the sky, "yet." The man abruptly turned his head looked at them as if he forgot what he just said.
"Why exactly did you call us, sir?"
"I said so, I saw a bright red flash." Abruptly the man got up and bent towards them. He lifted his finger to her and a gross smell came her way. Lisa wanted to take a step backwards, but Jonathan grasped her wrist.
"I tell you: it was something demonic, I can feel it." The man put a hand on his heart. Lisa and Jonathan looked at each other.
"I don't think it's anything demonic though, sir. You know that demons can't come into the sunlight."
"Alright then, if you do not want to believe me, then that's your problem. Typical shadowhunters, first say they don't need us and afterwards we always have to help them. But I warned you!" With those words, the man turned around and he slumbered away, with his hands in his pockets.
"Okay, that was weird," said Lisa, watching the man walk away. She could tell by looking at Jonathan's eyes, he thought so too.
"Come on, let's have a look inside." He walked to the door. Lisa followed him when he walked in.
"Maybe someone else has seen that light," he pondered.
"Do you belíéve that werewolf? He was even drunker than you are on a party," Lisa shouted. Jonathan looked around irritated.
"We must at least investigate it."
She and Jonathan scanned the place for other downworlders. There were two more werewolves at a table in the corner. A mundane wouldn't see the difference between a werewolf and one of their own. Werewolves simply looked human at first sight, if at least you didn't make them angry. It is probably due to their years of training, that they could recognize wolves and vampires so quickly, thought Lisa. And there was something with their eyes...
Jonathan has seen them as well and together they approached the werewolves. There were a man and a woman, the woman had short blond ringlets and the man had short-shaved hair and an earring.
"Dear Lycanthropes," Jonathan began. The werewolves gave him and angry look, in general they didn't quite get along with the shadowhunters and Lisa didn't think they liked to be called so. Jonathan didn't seem to notice it and sat down on a chair next to them.
"Do you happen to know the werewolf who stood outside?"
"Always nice to see you, Nephilim," the man growled, the last word he spat out.
"Yes, we do, it's Bart. He's in our pack," said the woman with an angry look at the man.
"Weird guy," he continued.
"Did he say something to you about a bright red light?" Lisa wanted to know.
"Yes, definitely, he kept saying that he had seen a red light and that we're all going to die." The werewolf rolled with his eyes and looked bored. Jonathan nodded.
"And you haven't seen a flash?"
"No, of course not! You children don't actually believe that crazy old Bart? He drank more than twenty beers!" Replied the man with a wide arm gesture.
"Can you leave now? ' Jonathan scraped his throat.
"Okay, thanks for the information." He got up and grabbed Lisa by her arm.
"Come on Lis, we're going." She looked at the two werewolves, the man swilled another beer and the woman watched at her and Jonathan leave. Jonathan still had her by the arm and pulled her outside with him.

Lisa arrived panting at the Institute, they had run all the way back. Jonathan was anything but out of breath, there wasn't even a drop of sweat to be seen on his forehead. Yet he swept his forehead with his hand, Lisa knew he had restrained himself for her all the time.
"I'm going to tell dad it was false alarm." He glanced at her and ran off. Lisa was left behind in the hallway. She decided to go back to the library: her sandwich was still there. She knew for sure that if she didn't eat something quickly, she was going to drop dead.
Marianne was still in the same place where she had seen her last, Lisa greeted her. Miraculously the blood was washed out of the rug, the whole corridor was cleaned.
"We do have to make an impression on our guests." Marianne looked pleased at her work.
"Who are our guests actually? We didn't get much information about them." Lisa couldn't contain her curiosity.
"We don't either. The only thing I can tell you, is that it's a boy and a girl. One who's fifteen years old and one of fourteen." Lisa slowly nodded, that wasn't much more information.
"I'm going to make dinner now, we're going to eat in an hour. Would you like to say that to Annabeth and Jonathan? '
"Sure." Lisa smiled by hearing Anna's full name.
As usual, she found Anna in the library. Lisa dropped herself into a chair next to her.
"What was going on in Den Engel?" Anna didn't look up from her book.
"A drunk werewolf," she sighed. Lisa's eye was caught by the plate where she had put her sandwich on, it was empty now.
"Have you eaten my sandwich?" Now Anna looked up from her book.
"You know no food is safe around me," she said, as if that explained everything. With an angry look at Anna and a frustrated sigh, Lisa picked up her book, hoping to forget the time until dinner.
