2 - The Silent Brothers
"I hope you find someone you can't live without. I really do. And I hope you never have to know what's like to have to try and live without them."
-Kiera Cass
Lisa arrived at the Institute, exhausted, the door was still wide open. She didn't have to seek Jonathan: she could just follow the red-black blood track. That's going to be an amusing cleaning work. The track led to the infirmary, where Anna was laying in a bed while Jonatan sat next to her. Breathless, Lisa crashed into a chair.
"And?" She threw a scared look at Anna.
Jonathan sighed: "I think we better call the Silent Brothers, I can't remove the tooth myself."
"Let me have a look." Lisa rolled up the leg of Anna's gear and looked at her lower thigh, it was coloured blue-purple. Lisa bit her lip, that didn't look good at all. Her neck was even worse. Jonathan shifted uncomfortably in his chair. "I should have kept my mouth shut about that amputated leg," she said to herself. Lisa grabbed the tooth and slightly started pulling it out. Not a very good idea: the tooth had barbs and she only made it worse.
With a scream, Anna regained consciousness, Lisa didn't see that coming and also screamed. Anna's forehead was totally sweaty, her blond hair knotted and she breathed heavily.
"Anna! Are you alright?"Stupid question, it's pretty obvious that she's not alright. She didn't answer, her eyes were closed and it wasn't clear if she had lost consciousness again.

This was not the first time someone was injured in a fight. The infirmary was almost their second bedroom. Even though it had never been so serious.
"I am going to call the Silent Brothers." Jonathan was clearly sick of waiting. He got up and walked outside.
The Silent Brothers served as archivists and medics of the shadowhunters. Their rather special appearance scared most people, even Jonathan. But they didn't scare Lisa. She had wanted to become a Silent Brother when she was small. But as their name predicts, they only accept men.
Lisa reached for her stele in her weapon belt and quickly drew an iratze on her arm and leg. The stele resembled a long silver pencil and burned elegant black stripes – runes – into her skin. They looked like tattoos, though runes had a purpose. The wounds closed immediately, thanks to the iratze, as if they had never been there, except for the scars of course. Jonathan came back in again.
"They are coming." He glanced at her stele. "Ah, your stele isn't broken, can you help me with a rune?" Lisa shook her head, he only had that stele for a month and he had already broken it.
"You can't even draw an iratze yourself anymore?"
"I can't draw one on my neck and back myself," he said in an irritated tone. She carefully drew a healing rune on his neck, the wounds in his neck and cheek closed.
"Take off your shirt," Lisa said, pointing at his gear. "It's covered with demon blood, by the way." Jonathan grimaced.
"Look at yourself." He was right, her outfit was also covered with the ichor, she felt it burning on her skin. He took off the upper half of his leathery outfit and exposed a deep wound on his back. Lisa rested her elbow on his shoulder while she drew an iratze on his back as well. She heard him gasping when the burning stele touched his skin.
"Okay, ready." She pushed herself away and got up. I'm going to change clothes," she said with blushing cheeks.
"Wait, I'm coming with you, I also need a new shirt."
Lisa shook her head. "You should with Anna, I will bring you a T-shirt."
Without awaiting his answer, she turned around on her heel and ran to her room. There she took off her gear and threw it on the ground. Lisa pulled a clean shirt over her head and put new jeans on. Along the way to Jonathan's room, she stopped to take a look in the rooms of Maxim and Lotte. To her big surprise and relief, they simply slept. In Jonathan's room, she snatched one of the many T-shirts from the ground that was somewhat clean. She stumbled upon a sheath of a sword on her way back and cursed Jonathan for never cleaning his room.
Back at the infirmary, Jonathan was waiting for her outside and told her that the Silent Brothers were already inside. Lisa would normally laugh at the idea of Jonathan receiving the Silent Brothers with a bare torso. If only Anna wasn't dying. She threw him his shirt, which he quickly put on.
She had a lot of confidence in the healing skills of the Silent Brothers, and yet..."I want to go in," said Lisa, gazing at the door.
"I was told not to let anyone in." Lisa let herself fall on the ground and Jonathan did the same.
"Do you have any idea where those demons came from?" she wondered.
"I have no idea," he said slowly. That made Lisa even more nervous and she started tapping her fingers on the floor. Jonathan put his hand on hers so she would stop. "Anna will be alright, you know how strong she is." He looked at her with kindness in his eyes. She realised Jonathan himself also had to be worried to death. Lisa muttered something too quiet for Jonathon to hear.
The door of the infirmary flew open, and two Silent Brothers appeared. Lisa pulled her hand back from Jonathan's and they simultaneously got up. The two men had a bone-coloured cloak, like all the Silent Brothers. They took off their hoods and revealed a bald, with rune-covered head. Their eyes and mouths were sewn up, so they couldn't talk nor see. They had telepathic powers, their voices echoed in Lisa's head.
We have been able to remove the Raum's tooth and administered an antidote. She will still need some rest, but will heal completely, said one of them. If they wouldn't always be so formal and dire, Lisa would've kissed them.
"Thank you for your help, brother Haggai and brother Baruch." Without saying another word, they left. No longer able to control herself, Lisa ran into the infirmary.
"Anna!" When Lisa saw that Anna was awake and sitting up in the bed, she embraced her.
"Ouch," Anna groaned, "you act as if I was dead." Her voice was faint, but she spoke with a slight smile on her face.
"In my defense, you almost were!"
"Ladies, you have heard the Silent Brothers; Anna needs rest. And we could use some sleep too." Jonathan wanted to take Lisa with him, but Anna swung her legs over the side of the bed.
"I'm going to sleep in my own room," she said determinedly. She got up, with a rather pained look on her face.
"Are you sure that's a good-"
"I'm fine," she cut Lisa off. Anna's word was law, so instead of protesting, Lisa helped her. She supported her and together they walked into the hallway. Jonathan was already gone, concerned as he was.
"How did all of this happen?" Lisa sighed. She hoped Anna could tell a bit more about the Raums.
"The sensor detected a weak signal of demon activity in the Kruipersstreet, when we got there, there was nothing to be seen. Suddenly we were surrounded by dozens of Raums"
"As far as I know, Raums aren't herddemons." Anna's laugh rang in her ears.
"I'm not sure that's a real word." When Lisa shrugged, Anna's smile disappeared again. Her friend sighed fatigued: "Apparently not."
"I should have gone with you," Lisa sighed
Anna shook her head. "Someone had to watch over the little ones."
"Why do I always have to do that?" she asked, suddenly irritated. You know I can't act bossy around them, I'm not their sister." She actually knew the answer to that question: she can't fight as well as Anna and Jonathan, but they would never admit it.
"Are they okay?" asked Anna, avoiding her question.
"Yes, they are sleeping. Lot had locked Max up again- '
Anna made a frustrated sound. "Max must learn to defend himself, he is by The Angel older than Lot."

When they arrived at Anna's bedroom, Lisa opened the door for her. "Come on, you're going to sleep now. Tomorrow is an important day."
"You're right." She limped to her bed and grimaced. "Mom and dad are going to be so angry," said Anna painfully.
"That's not what I meant, but I'm sure your parents won't be too angry." Although she didn't believe it herself.
"If you say so." They both yawned. "I don't know what you're going to do, but I'm going to sleep." Anna turned herself in her bed and closed her eyes.
Lisa didn't understand how Anna could sleep right now, they had almost been murdered by Raums. She closed the door as quietly as possible and walked to her bedroom, which was right next to Anna's. She laid down on her sheets and knocked on the wall three times, she got three knocks back. She knew that Anna could fall asleep any time, but nightmares about the Raums kept Lisa awake.
