Chapter 1 ~ The Story of the Legend Begins Here

~ From Outer Space to planet Earth ~

A fireball made his lonely way through space, flying steadily with a certain destination in mind. His golden tears could easily be mistaken for comet streaks, though he was far from any ordinary space phenomenon.

He was an eternal, the only one of his kind. He had traveled through every corner of the universe, through every portal and every dimension, visited every planet, met every kind of people. He had just spoken with novice space travelers called vampires, an alien lifeform that was new to traveling in space. He could tell they weren't humans at first glance, since they lacked the heat signature humans did, but he was so excited to meet them regardless, hoping they were of his kind or at least a variant of his kind. They were kind and friendly, pleasant company, but the Phoenix left in disappointment, let down by his own hopes and dreams.

Why should I hope when it'll only let me down? There's no hope for me at all, he thought despondently, crying silent golden tears as he continued flying alone through space. What made me think those lifeforms could possibly be of my kind? Deep inside I knew the truth, but I feigned ahead with my stupid hope, hoping against hope they were what I am: a Phoenix. An eternal lifeform.

They were immortals, but even immortals are just temporaries. Lifeforms with an ending. I don't have an ending and never will. I will never experience death nor ever feel it. What I feel is this constant, endless loneliness and despair that always haunts me.

I'm the only one of my kind. I'm truly forever alone. Why was I given such a cruel existence? Why must I experience this eternal torture and mental pain? Am I truly cursed? And on and on the Phoenix's thoughts descended into the all-too-familiar darkness of depression.

He trembled, looking down at the planet below him as he finally reached a halt. He admired planet Earth in all its beauty, its familiar green and blue sphere comforting him slightly. He had been here multiple times; Earth was a frequent stop in his space travels, as was planet Iredescent. Earth reminded him of planet Vasya in its early days, and Iredescent had a legend that occurred every ninety years, so naturally he was drawn to the legend, believing it secondary to him.

Even though Iredescent's legend is temporary, it does have a constant in that a new legend appears every ninety years. It's always been that way ever since the first Black Rose. That's why I go there every ninety years to see who the new Black Rose is, sometimes even speak with them.

The Phoenix returned to the present, sighing as he began his descent on planet Earth. Humans would easily mistake him for a comet or shooting star, not knowing he was the most powerful lifeform in the galaxy. Best to tease them sometimes, but keep them unaware, he thought, remembering the few times in the past where he revealed himself to them, only for the humans to believe he was a god from the heavens.

The Phoenix chuckled at the memory. He first revealed himself to the ancient Greeks in his flaming bird form. They of course were astounded and treated him like a god, calling him Phoenix. They adorned him in the color purple and even named a city after him, calling it Phoenicia. They loved the way the edges of his feathers turned purple when he burned for an extended time, like the way burning fire has blue edges. He looked just like fire in his Phoenix form, his yellow, orange, and the purple-tinged edges of his feathers inspiring the Greeks and their many works of art, depicting him as the mighty powerful bird he is.

Though the Phoenix enjoyed his time with the ancient Greeks, he thought they were too gullible for believing he was an actual god. He left them shortly after and went to travel to other parts of the world, unwittingly introducing himself to Native American and ancient Mayan cultures.

The Phoenix emerged from his fireball form to his full Phoenix form, turning into a giant flaming bird that dove directly into a volcano in Japan located in the Ring of Fire. Mount Fuji was one of his favorite volcanoes, but unfortunately it had become a tourist site in the modern years, so he ventured towards a lesser-known volcano he called Rai, one where he can easily hide inside, out of sight of curious human onlookers.

The Phoenix settled comfortably in the volcano, sighing contently as he sunk into the depths. The magma underneath was like warm bedding, the earthen walls guarding his dwelling place for the time being. Home sweet home, the Phoenix thought sarcastically as he nestled in the volcano. Here's to another few centuries of same old, same old. What makes me think this time would be any different?
