Chapter 33 ~ Revived Road Kill
Keith rose out of bed one morning, woken up by the sunlight streaming into the bed room. He looked over at the other beds and noticed Cole's bed was empty. His Iredescent senses caught the sound of running water from the faucet. He instantly knew Cole was in the bathroom washing his hands. The others were still asleep, the room quiet and peaceful. None of the irangels snored; Iredescents and irangels don't snore, ever. Only humans snored.
Cole dried his hands and walked out of the bathroom, dressed in a heathered blue shirt and grey sweats. Keith thought he looked so much like a college student, tousled hair and all. Cole caught Keith's eye and gave him a small nod in hello, saying, "Guten Morgen" as he headed for the kitchen.
(Guten Morgen means Good Morning in German. The pronunciation is: Goo-tehn Mor-gehn)
"Guten Morgen," Keith said back, curious to see what Tori was up to this fine day. He longed to go outside and fly in the sunshine, but they were no longer allowed that limited restricted freedom, kept solely as prisoners. No, Keith amended, as lab subjects in her secret irangel experimentation.
Cole helped himself to steel cut oats with blueberries and fresh milk as Keith sat with his elbows on the table, gazing out the window. Though the irangels could see somewhat of a frosty view of the outside world, they were invisible to the outside world. The glass was less opaque than the glass wall that separated the bed room from the transformation room, making it more visible to see what was going on outside. Spring had turned to summer, the days bright and sunny.
As Keith continued admiring the bright colors coming from the sunlight hitting the forest, he squinted his eyes when he saw what looked like an angel walking towards the glass building carrying something in a red blanket.
Cole turned towards the window as he sensed the angel's approach. Both irangels watched as the blonde angel, dressed in a white shirt and slim skinny light blue jeans, her wings white-ish grey, take flight with the smaller bundle in her hands. Shortly after, they heard the entrance door open from the storage room and realized the angel was Tori.
Cole's eyes narrowed and Keith's eyes widened as they watched Tori walk over to the experimentation room. They hastily followed her, Cole saying sternly, "What are you up to now, you evil bitch – " He stopped mid-word when they both saw what was in the blanket.
It was a dead raccoon. Tori set it on the table, facing Cole and Keith as she smoothed out the blanket so that it was flat on the table. The small red blanket was actually a thick blanket scarf. Tori must've been wearing it while she was out, Keith thought. It made a nice cushion for the raccoon. Its eyes were closed and there were a few wounds from where it had been hit by a car. The blood was dried, fur matted in it.
"I found a raccoon lying dead on the side of the road," Tori confirmed, putting on a white lab coat over her clothes. "I want to try something I know how to do but never done before."
Cole already knew what Tori was going to attempt doing. He stared at her incredulously. "Oh my stars," he said softly, realizing. "You're gonna try to bring it back to life."
Tori met Cole's eyes, the look in them confirming his realization. Keith gasped, asking, "How is it even possible? He's already dead."
"Hours dead, to be precise. He was hit by a car about two or three hours ago," Tori answered. "I'm going to see if I can successfully bring him back to life."
"No freakin' way!" Keith exclaimed as other awakened irangels started coming in the room. Velo was rubbing his eyes, saying, "So what are you all gathered here for?" while Justin immediately asked, "What's going on?"
"Tori's gonna bring roadkill back to life," Cole said, unable to take his eyes off the raccoon.
As the irangels watched, Tori pulled the sheet off something covered to the side, unveiling a human-sized capsule pod. It was white and futuristic-looking with clear light blue lines on the side. A small tray emerged at the side along with a computer system screen. Its ethereal appearance caught the irangels off guard, realizing this was something Tori must've carefully constructed a long time ago.
Tori laid out a fresh white cloth in the bed of the pod. She carefully lifted the raccoon and placed him in the pod. The lid shut, clear like glass so that the irangels could see what was going on inside the pod. Tori powered up the pod, activating its internal system controls. The irangels watched in confusion and awe as Tori pressed several commands, initiating the raccoon's revival.
An electronic noise alerted them to electricity running through currents generated within the pod. All the irangels were held in amazement as electric lightning blazed inside the pod, striking the raccoon as though it attached and hit a battery. At the same time, a cloudy white gas vapor condensed on the glass, making it blurry. Several applicators attached themselves onto the raccoon. A breathing mask was placed, and the process began.
The irangels jumped when they suddenly saw the raccoon move, as if jump-started by the electric current. After a few minutes, the electricity vanished, the cloudy vapor faded, the pod opened, and the raccoon began whimpering.
"Tori just – did you just – w-what – " Eamon could not express his immense shock. The others were as equally shocked as Eamon.
Tori stood still, her own eyes wide as she saw the success of her work. An astonished moment passed before she slowly approached the pod and picked the raccoon up in a clean blanket. The raccoon was alive and well, no signs of it being former roadkill. The cloudy vapor healed all injuries, a certain gas dissipated any bacteria while also disintegrating blood and dirt, and a careful process with electricity brought the dead animal back to life. Successfully.
Everyone's eyes were focused on the raccoon cradled in Tori's arms. The animal would still need some time to fully recover, but he no longer had any broken bones nor bruises; a healing gel rebuilt any broken bones and tissue. He was a little weak, but he would be strong again in just a few days.
"You brought a dead raccoon back to life," Justin said, totally awed. "Successfully."
Tori was just as stunned as the irangels. She held the raccoon as carefully as if she were holding a baby, staring as if it were gold and precious jewels. I'm capable of bringing the dead back to life, she thought in amazement. If I can bring animals to life, I can bring humans to life too.
After a long stunned silence, Tori said to the irangels, "I'm going to take the raccoon to a vet to make sure he gets any proper care he needs before being released back into the wild. I'll take Camdren with me."
The others looked at him, wondering why he was chosen to come with her. Truthfully, Tori just picked whoever looked the most innocent that moment. She didn't want to bring Justin so the others wouldn't think she picked favorites. She didn't like the look in Velo's eyes hinting that he was capable of animal abuse in addition to human abuse. She knew Cole hated her. She didn't feel like bringing a woman along, liking a man's presence better. When deciding between Keith and Camdren, she decided Camdren would be more pleasant company.
He sure came a long way from being a rapist and sex offender, she thought, remembering how she found him in a trash littered alley. His crimes of rape and sexual assault seemed like a different lifetime ago now that Camdren matured after becoming an irangel, especially after getting in a stable relationship with Elisa. Hidden aspects of his character were starting to show as the vulnerability he felt started to fade away. Now that he had Elisa and the two were surprisingly in a very good relationship together, Camdren was becoming a much better person than he ever was in the past.
Keith's sudden forced withdrawal from hardcore drugs helped establish him into a better person. His new irangel body was perfectly free of the harsh influence the drugs had over his human body, and his dependence on the drugs was worn away by distraction of circumstance. In effect, Tori successfully weaned a drug addict off drugs in a matter of days just by turning him into an irangel and keeping him prisoner in the glass building, completely drug-free. His human body would've gone through severe withdrawal symptoms, but Keith thanked the lucky stars for his new irangel body.
Camdren interrupted Tori's mental assessment of the irangels by carefully taking the raccoon out of her arms. He carried him like a baby, talking quietly while the confused animal chittered.
"Maybe he's hungry?" Elisa asked, intrigued by the sight of her boyfriend holding a cute raccoon.
"I know I would be if I was brought back to life," said Keith, huddling near Camdren.
Tori allowed the irangels to fawn over the raccoon for a moment longer before taking Camdren and leaving the others locked up in the glass building.
Eamon stood staring at the healing pod, astonished by what Tori had done. Cole stood near, also looking at the pod. It made Cole scared to think of what Tori could do, but he dared not show it. He moved to stand beside Eamon, the other guy's emotions reaching him and making him feel the same.
"She's proven now that she can bring the dead back to life," said Eamon. "Tori can literally do anything she sets her mind to. I truly believe she will find immortality."
Cole paused in horror before saying, "And then what? She'll never stop."
"I'm scared, Cole," Eamon said quietly, surprising Cole. "I don't want to become immortal, but I also don't want to die here. If she discovers immortality, who knows what else she'll do? She stole our lives, keeps us trapped here like prisoners, bound to her will, and for what? What's to become of us after all this?"
Eamon began crying. Cole looked at him, startled to see tears. He slowly put an arm around his shoulder, saying, "I've got a solution: kill Tori."
"You seem committed, so I leave that task to you," Eamon said in response.
Justin came in the lab room that moment, wondering where they were. Eamon brushed away a few of his tears and left the room. Cole stood facing Justin, a frosty air about him now that Eamon was gone.
"This is just the beginning," Cole told Justin. "We need to stop Tori before she does any further. Neither of us have any doubt that if Tori can bring roadkill back to life, she can most definitely bring people back to life. Do you think she'll stop at Nate?"
He could see Justin thinking over it, heavily considering it. It was the reluctant truth, one where he knew Cole was right and that the only way to stop the woman he loved from unleashing further horror was to kill her.
"Time to decide whose side you're on," Cole told him coldly, leaving the room.
Justin turned his attention to the pod where nothing remained. The blanket in the pod had a few stray furs, but no signs of former injury in the slightest. It astonished and scared him at the same time. Somehow, he knew this wouldn't be the only thing Tori would accomplish successfully.
