Chapter 25 ~ Angel Resort
A few days later, Nate invited everyone to go to Angel Resort. Most of the irangels were ecstatic to finally go outside of the glass building and the surrounding forest. Velo was uncertain, since he wasn't interested in winter sports and snow. Cole kept glaring at Tori darkly, and Justin had a constant look of jealousy. Eamon was the one who kept the two from fighting or doing something stupid.
Tori had them all wear the same cuff she made Nate wear when she first met him. It angered Cole that Tori and Nate were the only irangels without the cuffs and that Tori gave Nate free reign to go anywhere he wanted, not forcing him to stay in the glass building like she did the others. Eamon hung near Cole to make sure he didn't try to fight or kill Tori, knowing he wanted to. He kept Justin close, forcing the two to hang out with him as they followed the excited irangels to Angel Resort.
Cole breathed in the super fresh, cold mountain air that enveloped the ski lodge in a piney scent. Though he enjoyed the fresh air and scenery, he despised their limited freedom. The cuffs were unisex and stylish to some extent, but to Cole they were the symbol of them being prisoner.
Keith complained, saying Tori was treating them like children with those bracelet cuffs. Justin had to admit it was true. He fingered his, remembering how Tori had once kept him handcuffed. This bracelet is just another type of chain that's being used to imprison us, he thought. Though he didn't like what it stood for, he found he was sort of fond of it since it was something Tori gave him. Eamon looked at him as Justin was admiring the cuff, thinking, Either he's got the hots for Tori or he's got Stockholm syndrome really bad, or both.
Camdren and Elisa were having the most fun, flying around while hurling snowballs at each other. Velo was huddled in a deep blue parka, his body language saying, This is too cold. Millian was admiring the landscape and the way the snow sparkled. He was walking around and taking pictures per his interest in photography. Nate was inspired and had them all stand together while he took a couple group pictures, then individual shots. Eamon took to skiing, listening attentively as Nate taught him how to ski. The others were more interested in flying, though Millian, Camdren, Elisa, and Cole decided to try their hand in the winter sport.
Tori exclaimed happily as she went down the hill past Cole, who shook his head and steered to the left. Justin was sulking on a high tree branch, his wings spread out. He was dressed in a grey and white coat and blue scarf, glumly watching the irangels having fun. Eamon and Cole tried to get him to ski with them, but Justin declined.
Tori was wearing a white winter coat, jeans, and light brown winter boots. Nate had on darker brown coat with a 90's-esque lighter brown fleece interior that kept the wearer super warm. His jeans were a dark wash and he wore a scarf and boots. He looked like a 90's poster boy; all that was missing was a plate of warm homemade chocolate chip cookies and an ad.
Eamon totally rocked the stunning winter look with a green and cream white winter coat, light grey boots, and a warm scarf. Camdren was decked out entirely in navy and red, with some dark grey. He looked cozy in it and reminded Cole of an Abercrombie & Fitch model. Elisa stood out in a magenta pink coat and neon boots, her hair done up in two Dutch braids.
Nate temporarily closed Angel Resort for 'maintenance' so the irangels could enjoy it privately, without prying human eyes and outside attention. "It's not yet time for us to be revealed," Tori said as she blocked off that section of Austria from satellite view. Their flight path was blocked out as well, specific areas marked out by certain landscapes.
It was but another reason for Cole to hate Tori and for Eamon to question Tori's motives. "Why not reveal ourselves?" Eamon asked Tori, folding his arms. "I see no reason to hide what we are. I'm more beautiful now than I ever was in my life."
"Trust me, there's a reason," said Tori, causing Cole to scoff and say, "Like we'd ever trust you."
Nate turned to Cole, reminding him of a doe while Cole was like a stubborn rock. "I used to think in a similar way," he said. "I didn't see why Tori wanted to become an Iredescent so much, but now I see the beauty of it. We truly can do so much more than we could have had we remained human. Like you, I used to resent being an irangel, but now I grew to love it."
Cole gave him a dirty look. "You only love it because of Tori. She kept you prisoner, and here you are treating her like a queen. What kind of prisoner falls in love with their captor?"
"She detained me for a time, yes, but that was because – " Nate started to say.
"Whatever," Cole rudely interrupted, shrugging past him and grazing him with his elbow. "You're stupid for falling in love with her."
"Hey," said Eamon, seizing Cole by the arm before he could walk away any further. "Cut it out. You're just jealous because you're single. I'm single too, but I'm not complaining."
"No," Cole said in response, meeting his eyes with a dark glare. "I hate Tori more than anything. And it angers me to see two men adore her when she's the one who took my life away. I had an amazing, happy human life and she stole it from me. She turned me into a sparkly winged alien, and yeah it's great that we can fly and sparkle like diamonds, but we're like caged birds in here, stuck in this glass building, held against our will, treated like prisoners or chained animals. And you guys could care less about that because you're too busy trying to get in Tori's pants," said Cole, directing the last sentence at Nate and Justin.
Roughly jerking his arm out of Eamon's grasp, Cole gave Nate and Justin a cold glare before slamming the resort door open and going outside. Eamon followed him while Nate, Justin, Tori, Camdren, Elisa, Keith, Millian, and Velo stood surprised at Cole's outburst.
Tori's face was expressionless, though she appeared to be thinking over something. Justin and Nate glanced at each other, Nate realizing for the first time that Justin loved Tori. Camdren and Elisa covertly headed for the interior loft, Velo vanishing in direction of the hot tub, but Keith and Millian stayed behind, looking directly at Tori.
"Cole's right," Millian said quietly. "You're not a hero for giving us wings; you're a villain for taking our lives away from us. You claim to have some great plan for humanity, thinking you're some great scientist, but you're just a thief and a murderer. You don't better peoples' lives; you destroy them. What's the point in giving us a new life if we don't get to choose how we want to live it? Why keep us hidden from the world? Are you not ashamed of your own actions and what you did to 'accomplish' all this? Well don't be surprised if your obsession for a legacy becomes the end of you."
Millian left, going outside towards the tree line. Keith shook his head slowly before leaving the room. Justin locked eyes with Nate, who still seemed surprised. Tori just stood impassively, deep in thought. After a long silence, she turned abruptly and headed for the bedroom, her back straight, her head high and confident. Justin and Nate stood uncomfortably, neither wanting to speak to the other.
Justin spoke first, saying, "I know she loves you more; she's always loved you. It breaks my heart that she doesn't feel the same way for me, but it doesn't change how I feel about her. I guess all I have to say to you is that if you hurt Tori in the slightest – "
"I would never hurt Tori," Nate interrupted, his voice quiet and demure. "You can be sure of it. I'm no murderer."
"Can't say the same, for I was once a murderer," said Justin. "However, you and I are alike in that our irangel lives turned out much better than our human lives. Of course, the only problem is we want the same woman."
"She isn't your woman though," Nate told him. "Tori and I are back together now, and I don't intend to break up with her for the second time."
"Should something ever come between you two, know that I will be waiting in the wings," said Justin, intentionally making the pun.
Nate noticed, his reaction between a scoff and a chuckle, but he seemed to be bothered by something else now that he was sure Justin wouldn't be a fierce competitor who'd try any ill intentions with Tori. He turned back to Justin, saying, "Cole made a valid point in that Tori is wrong for keeping us hidden from the world. She keeps saying she doesn't want to reveal us yet."
"That's because she's probably planning on raising an irangel army," Justin told Nate. "Do you not remember how many beds are in that bed room? She intended to create more than a few irangels."
"I wonder why she stopped," Nate mused, wondering.
Justin was silent, knowing they were the reason why, but he kept that information to himself and didn't say anything further. He studied Nate carefully, beginning to understand what Tori saw in him. Nate can be so naive sometimes, he thought. His naivety creates a depiction of innocence that Tori is drawn to. She is drawn to me for direction, and is drawn to Nate for the guilelessness she once had. The Tori she was before she was corrupted by knowledge of Iredescent.
