16: Project Enterprise

Across town, the other four investigators were hesitating in getting out of the car. The music was still playing quietly, providing a little noise, but they were silent for the most part. With the information that they had received from Joanna Henry, some of them were a bit unsure about what they were going to get themselves into.

"So, if Ty Lyttleton is involved in this, what if we get caught?" Louisa asked, glancing at the others around her. "We could get killed, held hostage...I don't even want to imagine the other possibilities."

"Plus, we don't even have a plan on how we're going to go through with this. What are we even supposed to do?" Nate asked, looking between them.

Dirk's eyes lit up, taking the challenge. "The universe will tell us, that's how. Now come on," he told them, getting out of the car quickly.

The other three were silent and hesitated getting out of the car at first, before Louisa looked back at Farah. "You've worked with him before. Does he normally do this? And does it normally work out?"

Farah sighed. "Yeah, he normally does this reckless stuff. But, generally, it somehow works out. The universe, he says, and I don't have an answer that would be much better than that," she replied. "We'd better follow so we don't miss out on whatever he had for an idea, or whatever the universe supplies him with."

The two Winthrops nodded, and they got out along with Farah. Quickly, they closed and locked the door before following Dirk towards the door.

Along the way, Dirk stopped and crouched down in the middle of the parking lot. "Dirk, what are you doing?" Nate inquired of him.

Dirk picked something up and returned to his full height, then turned around to show what he had picked up. It was an ID badge for somebody who worked in the building, a guy with dark brown hair and green eyes, just like Nate. If somebody wasn't looking clearly enough, they could probably mistake the person on the card for Nate. "This can be our ticket in, or at least yours, Nate. This can get us back into places we couldn't access, and hopefully nobody will question it if we go with you...and grab a lab coat or two to wear."

Nate chewed his lip, then stepped forward to take the card. "Well, thanks, I guess. Maybe you were right, the universe is looking out for us." He clipped the card to his shirt pocket, allowing it to be at a moderately good view, so he would be ready. "Great. Now, we just need to sneak into the lab. Back door?"

"You got it. Let's go," Louisa declared, and the four of them made their way along the sidewalk towards the back of the building, or what seemed to be the back of the building. When there, Nate took the found ID card and scanned into the lab. Thankfully, the card worked, and the light on the scanner switched from red to green. As the door clicked to signify it being unlocked, Dirk pushed it open and they entered warily.

There was a rack of lab coats right off to the side of the doorway once they entered, and the four of them quickly slid them on so they would blend in. Nate moved the ID card to the pocket on the lab coat instead after sliding his on. As soon as the four were ready, they made their way down the hall, glancing around as they walked together.

The lab, at first, seemed fairly normal. There were individual testing rooms on the left side of the hallway, and to the right, there were some scattered windows and art pieces to beautify the lab. "So, what exactly are we looking for?" Louisa whispered to Dirk, who she was walking beside in the moderately sized hallway.

"Anything that seems interesting..." Dirk replied just as quietly, and he quickly took a peek at what the plate next to one of the doors said. It was a simple research lab, apparently, because that's what the plate said. They continued on along the hallway, reading some more plates along the way.

Farah stopped in front of a plate that read Project Enterprise, and the rest of the group followed suit. "This seems promising," she commented, glancing at the other members of the group. "Should we try your card, Nate, and see if we can find out anything about it?"

"Yeah, sure." Nate pulled out his card and scanned it. They waited for a second, and thankfully the light turned green. They pushed the door open and entered the lab.

The first thing they noticed was a man standing in the back of the room, in front of a silver wall. He was dressed in tons of clothing in various clashing colors. If Harper, the resident fashion-lover, was here, she probably would have had a heart attack. But, the next thing they saw was shocking.

There were two people in front of the person in the clashing clothing, holding something that seemed clear. As they lowered it in front of the guy, he disappeared.

Well, except for the part that was red. The section of the man's clothing that was red still managed to show up. Whatever was lowered in front of the man was lifted and he became fully visible to a group of surprised investigators.

"Alright, so we still need to work on the red masking. But, on the bright side, we cancelled out the green part that was a problem from last test. Dr. Lyttleton will be happy to hear that," commented a woman with a clipboard as she scribbled down some observations.

"Did they just turn him invisible?" Louisa whispered to whoever in the small group would reply.

"I think they did. I think we have an explanation for how they carried out the crimes," Dirk answered, his eyes wide.

Then, their presence was realized. "Uh, who are you?" the woman with the clipboard asked, setting the board down on a table.

"Uh, we're the new employees. Dr. Lyttleton sent us down here to work on Project Enterprise," Farah replied calmly.

"We weren't told that we would have anybody new on the team. Just let me call it up to the office," the woman said and tapped the side of her ear, where a headset was positioned.

"Time to get out of here," Nate signalled quietly and they stepped back towards the door. "Oh, that's not necessary. We'll go up and get a verification sheet up from him himself."

"That's not protocol. Just wait--where are you going?" the woman demanded, just as the four investigators threw the door open and dashed off. "Security!" She begged for backup through her headset, and sure enough, she could see men in all black dashing down the hall behind the four that had left.

Outside, in the hall, the four of them were sprinting down the hall, shedding their lab coats along the way. They tossed the coats behind them, tripping a few of the security men as they chased them.

The hall seemed longer on the way back than it had felt on the way in. But, the door was in sight, thankfully. Louisa sprinted for the door and got it open for the four of them, pushing it open as she dashed through it. Dirk was right behind her, and Farah followed right after her.

Nate wasn't so lucky. Before he could get through the door, a security guard grabbed his collar and yanked him back into their grasp. Nate yelped in surprise and spun around, trying to fight them, but suddenly he felt something hit the back of his head and the world went black.

The door slammed shut behind Farah, and the three of them dove into the bushes and trees across the sidewalk from the door. It was too late when they realized what had just happened, and who was missing.

Louisa looked around frantically for her brother. "Nate? Nate?" she called, scanning the area around them. He had to be there somewhere. He couldn't have gotten stuck. They couldn't have left him in there.

They had. Her green eyes widened and filled with tears at the possibilities of what could be happening to her brother. Tortured, imprisoned, killed...the possibilities were endless. "No..." she mumbled, covering her face. How could this have happened?

Dirk and Farah shared a look, and at the same time, they reached out to support her. "Hey, it's going to be okay. We're going to get him back, we promise," Farah assured her, trying her best to make her feel better in any way she could.

"How do you know? And how would we be able to? We can't go to the police. What would we even say? 'Oh, hi. My brother's trapped in a lab that we broke into. Please save him and don't arrest us, we were just trying to do your job for you.' We'll get locked up." Louisa was completely distraught.

"We'll figure something out, and we'll get him back. The universe--," Dirk began, but was then cut off by a no longer sad, but angry Louisa.

"The universe won't do anything, Dirk! If the universe had been looking out for us, it wouldn't have allowed them to take him away!" She got up and patted her pocket, sighing in relief at the feeling of the spare set of keys to Nate's car. At least they could go home.

Dirk and Farah stood up as well, at a loss for words. What could they even say? There wasn't anything they could do at the moment, nothing that could truly ease her burden.

Louisa wasn't stopping, though. She looked at them both and said, "It's even my fault that he's a part of this."

"Oh, come on, that's not true and you know it," Farah assured her.

"Yes it is. If I didn't agree to help you two when I caught you," she began and pointed at Dirk directly, "in Stella's office, you wouldn't have come over and Nate and Harper wouldn't have gotten involved, and neither would Curtis. None of us would be involved, and Nate would be safe. It's my own damn fault." Louisa ran a hand through her hair and pushed herself to walk towards the car, turning away from the others. "Anyway, let's just head home. I gotta tell Harper," she replied with a sigh.

Dirk and Farah shared another look and sighed, feeling the guilt overwhelming them. But, they followed anyway, walking towards the car with her. As they walked to the car, Louisa unlocked the car.

Dirk walked up to the passenger's seat as Louisa stepped up to the driver's seat door. Quietly, Dirk asked, "Mind if I take this seat?"

Louisa shrugged. "It's yours, I guess." She opened the door and took a seat, buckling up with a soft sigh. As Farah got into her seat in the back, Louisa wiped away some tears.

Everybody got settled into the car before Louisa started it up. She started to pull away from the curb and leave the lab, but then she stopped. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see a black van pulling into the parking lot. "Farah, you've got the best angle. Can you see anything about that van?"

Farah nodded and turned her head to watch, her eyes trained on the van. She even unbuckled herself so she could turn around to watch clearer. At first, the van seemed fairly normal, or at least as suspicious as any other black van could be.

But that was before the van stopped moving. The driver parked the car and got out, as did the passenger. Farah craned her neck to see who it would be, and then she was able to identify them. Patrick Sullivan himself was the driver, accompanied by Remy Moon in the passenger seat. "I think we have confirmation that they're involved in this," she informed Louisa and Dirk quickly, knowing they couldn't see any of this nearly as clearly, before she continued to watch.

Patrick and Remy walked back to the sliding doors on their van. They quickly opened it up and reached into the car. They pulled a young woman, with her arms tied up and her eyes covered. "Somebody's been abducted," Farah told them, watching as the woman was brought into the building.

"Can you tell who?" Louisa asked.

Farah shook her head. "I can see she's got light brown hair, and it's up in a messy bun. I think she's wearing some kind of loungewear...but she's gone into the building now. I can't tell." She turned back around and buckled back into the car now that her attempt at observations were finished.

"Poor girl. Maybe we can get her out when we finish this case up," Louisa commented.

Dirk looked over at her with a bit of surprise in his eyes. "I thought you were going to quit the case," he admitted.

"I can't. I'm staying on so I can get my brother back," she replied. "But as soon as we're done, I'm out. I never want to be a part of this again, you hear me? Now let's get out of here before the security guards decide to look around for anybody else who was in there," Louisa replied and moved the car out of the parking space. With a quick glance around, she drove out of the parking lot and back towards home.

There was silence in the car for a little bit, then Farah sighed. "We probably need to call Harper, don't we?"

"Probably. I mean, Nate said that we'd call her in two hours, or whenever we'd get done, so we probably should. Dirk, could you get your phone out and call her?"

Dirk nodded and did so, dialing Harper's number before putting it on speaker in between the three of them. The phone rang and rang, but it was answered just before it would have gone to voicemail. Through the phone, Harper's voice could be heard loud and clear. "Hey, guys. How'd it go? Did you find out anything good?"

Louisa took a deep breath, her eyes on the road but still glassy with tears that threatened to fall. "Well, do you want the good news or the bad news?"

"What do you mean? What did you find out?" Harper asked, her voice full of confusion and nervousness. What could they possibly mean?

"Just choose one, please."

"Bad news."

Louisa took another deep breath, then spoke up. "We were chased on our way out of the lab, being found out. I made it through the door, and so did Dirk and Farah. Nate got taken. He... didn't make it." Harper was silent for a long period of time, and Louisa got nervous, so she spoke up again. "Scout?" she asked, using a nickname from years ago that she probably hadn't heard since they all went to college.

"When you say he didn't make it, do you mean he died?" Harper asked, her voice as quiet as a mouse's.

"I don't know. I'm hoping with every part of myself that he's okay, and that he's just being held hostage."

"What are we going to do?"

"We're going to get him back, that's what," Louisa replied and sighed, getting on the road around Seattle. "Not sure how, but we will. We'll solve this case and rescue him, Oliver, and the girl we just saw."

"What girl?" Harper was clearly confused by everything they were talking about.

"Well, that's the stuff we found out. We think we have a way that these crimes were committed, and we think we saw somebody that was abducted, and they were with Patrick and Remy."

"I should have asked for the good news first." Harper attempted to laugh. Then, she asked, "So, what happened?"

"Well, we made it into the lab with the help of a found ID card. There was a door inside that led to the research center for something called Project Enterprise. We went inside, and we saw a guy turn, uh, turn invisible." Farah chewed her lip as she spoke.

"Wait, what? How?"

"We're not sure. We saw these people raise and lower some weird fabric thing in front of this guy, and he turned invisible. Well, except for the part that was red. He was wearing all these clothing pieces that didn't match, and the red part didn't disappear fully, but everything else did. He was practically completely invisible!" Dirk commented, a bit in awe.

"That's...that's incredible. And that would explain how that person killed the people at the gas station without being seen. They just used a cloak or something." Harper paused for a second. "Wait, were they testing it still?"

"Yeah. What I assume is that they've got a prototype working that they're using at the moment to carry out the crimes, and they have to wear a specific color or something like that when they use it to go fully invisible. They're just working on perfecting it." Farah commented.

"Makes sense. Now what about this abducted girl?"

"So, we were about to leave when we saw a black van pull up. It was being driven by Patrick and Remy. We didn't see the rest of the band members, but we did see them get out and lead a girl who was blindfolded and tied up into the lab," Dirk explained.

"What did the girl look like?"

"She had light brown hair, light skin, was in some old loungewear, it seemed like...I didn't get a very good look before she was brought into the place," Farah explained. Harper gasped over the phone, and Farah quickly questioned her. "What? What's wrong?"

"I think that was Joanna," Harper answered.

"Joanna, like the girl you were just talking to?" Dirk asked curiously.

"I think so. It sounds similar enough. We're not far from her place yet. The group and I could run back and see if we could find her, like if she was still there," Harper commented.

"I thought you would be home by now," Louisa mused.

"I saw a nice restaurant and decided we should stop. I was hungry, and apparently Todd was too, but wouldn't admit it until we sat down," Harper explained.

"Okay. Finish your meal, then run back to the place if you can. We'll meet you back at the apartment. And Harper? Try to keep positive. I'll see you in a bit and we can talk about all this, okay?" Louisa chewed her lip, glancing down at the phone as she spoke.

Harper sighed. "Yeah, I will. I'm going to try my best. You too, okay? See you in a little bit." Harper hung up, and so did Dirk before he slipped his phone in his pocket.

A spell of silence came over the car, and then Louisa flicked the radio on to get the music back. Some soothing music came over the speakers, and she felt herself relax.

In their respective seats, Dirk and Farah started to relax a bit too. Nobody expected any of this, they could be sure, but when they got home, they'd have a chance to recuperate, and then they could get back to the search. After all, they've got quite a bit of information. Now if only they could convince the police that any of this actually made sense or should be believed...
