"Who won?" Tom says as Gus approaches a few hours later.

Tom leans against a rented pickup truck. It's parked behind the Betrug Café. One of the few spots in town out of view. Perfect for a nighttime meeting.

Beth grabs a briefcase from the cab. Places it on the tailgate of the truck.

"First winner was a cheat. Drilled some lead shot into the pumpkin. Second winner was clean. The Bauers. Third year in a row," Gus says. Shakes hands with Tom and Beth.

"A controversial win, I'm sure," Tom says.

"I just point to the scale. Numbers don't lie. Only people do," Gus says.

Beth leads the two to the tailgate. Taps on the briefcase.

"Let's talk," she says.

"I'm all ears," Gus says.

Beth opens up the briefcase. Pulls out a red envelope. Sets it on the tailgate.

"We know Red has a personal stake in the William N. Reynolds case," Beth says. Throws in the middle initial on purpose. Sets a certain tone.

"I knew it," Gus says. Repeats it. Nods his head.

"Did you know he's no longer playing an active role in the investigation?" Beth says.

"That a recent development? Never seemed like he had a role to begin with," Gus says.

Tom raises a palm. "In a certain way, he did. Do you know what way we're talking about?"

Gus rubs his jaw. "Yeah. I think so. But you say it first. Then I'll tell you if I agree."

Beth exchanges a look with Tom.

"It'd be better if you just told us what you know," Tom says.

Gus shakes his head. "Don't talk to me like that. None of this country bumpkin bullshit."

Tom misses a beat for the first time in a long while. Beth takes out a pen. Writes something on a business card. Hands it to Gus.

Gus inspects the card. There's only a single letter written on it.

"Jane," Gus says.
