First Day, New Beginnings!

(Ash)

The day started off cold. I woke up to the sound of the wind howling outside, trees shaking violently, indicating the speed of the wind somewhat. It was pretty fast.

The first day of high school was finally here. I looked up at my wardrobe, where my uniform hung. The uniform consisted of a blue and black blazer, a black shirt and a blue tie. We had to buy and wear our own black pants and everyone had shoes specifically used for school given to them in their lockers, with colours indicating the year you was in. Thankfully, to fit the uniform, we had blue.

"Urgh," I sighed, getting up from my bed. I wrapped myself in my bed covers and made my way downstairs. It was really cold.

"Good morning!" Mom shouted from the kitchen, hearing me coming downstairs. "I'll make you some pancakes."

"Morning," I yawned, ambling into the kitchen and towards the table. "I'll just have two today, I am not that hungry."

"It's a special occasion. Your first day at school," Mom sounded more excited than me. It was a Monday, who could blame me?

"Two, please," I repeated, sitting down with my covers still around me. "Why is it so cold inside?"

"Cold? Say that when you learn how to cook, it is hot over here," my Mom tutted as she spoke, cooking up breakfast.

"Well, anyway, I was planning to meet everyone at the bus stop near our middle school. They have a bus that runs through to the city and school," I told my Mom who turned to me with a frown.

"You could have told me that sooner, you'll need some money now."

"Sorry," I laughed nervously, tapping my index fingers against the table. I didn't have much patience and the pancakes were smelling so good, I could already taste them.

"Is your uniform ready and ok?" she just had to ask. All Mom's worried on the first day.

"Everything is fine," I replied in a serious tone with a hint of 'stop hassling me' mixed in. She seemed to understand because she continued to cook and sighed. "I'll probably be home late since it takes about 25 minutes on the bus."

"That's fine," Mom seemed to have finished, putting two fresh pancakes onto a plate. "You were all planning on making a club too, right? What was it again?"

"I have spoken about this several times, Mom..." I didn't give anything away to let her figure it out. I never told her about the body we found. We all kept it to ourselves.

"Oh right, 'The Investigation Club' or something, right?" she shrugged while putting the plate down in front of me, noticing the cover wrapped around my body. "You cold?"

"Very," I laughed a little. "I'll be fine in my cocoon."

"Well, you better hurry and eat up because you might miss this bus if you're not careful," Mom was worried as per usual, but I nodded.

"'Kay!" I added to the nod with pancake stuffed in my mouth. Today was going to be a long day, but it was feeling like the most exciting day of the year. The excitement kept growing and growing inside of me, expanding. I could feel it waiting to burst.

Once breakfast was finished, all that was left was to put on my uniform and finally set off to the bus stop. I was glad that the stop was right next to our old school. Each look at the campus reminded me of the past. I met everyone there. We made memories worth sharing with our future kids. We made the beginning of this very club. What was in store, was unbeknownst to us at the moment. I stepped outside into the cold. The wind had died down now and it was less harsh, so the weather was good enough to tolerate the cold, whenever it hit me. The walk wasn't too long, either, which was good. It was always quite simple to get to middle school. I had to pass down my street and then turn left at a crossroad. Then, it was a five-minute walk straight to the bus stop. The five minutes whizzed by. I had barely any time to collect my thoughts before noticing Cilan, Serena, Kenny and of course, Gary. Although he was forgetful and unorganised, he always seemed to be on time.

"Morning," Gary greeted me with a loud yawn.

"Hey everyone," I said, standing next to the bench at the stop.

"I just realised how tough school life is going to be. It has suddenly dawned on me," Serena spoke and we all turned to face her as she stared off into space.

"Did someone say, Dawn?" Dawn shouted from the other side, skipping across the road nonchalantly. Misty, Iris and May followed close behind her.

"Yeah, sure," Kenny sighed and brought up his phone momentarily. "I wonder where Drew is?"

"Moreso, I wonder if May is okay," I couldn't help but grin, realising there was no chocolate stuck to her hands.

"I have Miss Bossy Boots following me around. Iris won't leave me alone. help me," she mouthed the last two words and all I could do was shake my head and laugh.

"Excuse me, but if you even consider eating chocolate this early in the morning I will make sure you never eat it again," Iris threatened May, but she didn't seem bothered. One casual shrug and Iris was mad as hell.

"You didn't say anything about drinking it, so that's fine. Besides, I am not hungry," May sat down on the arm of the bench, leaning against the back of it.

"I could only imagine a lactose intolerant May," Cilan spoke for the first time, having averted his attention from his phone.

"What's that?" Gary asked. I wasn't really sure myself, having never heard it that many times.

"You can't eat dairy products, basically. That's all there is to it, I think..." Cilan trailed off, putting his phone away. "Anyway, I got Clemont to save some seats for us."

"Oh, that's right. Of course, Clemont got into L.A.P," Misty nodded with a face that kind of said 'that's pretty decent'.

"Well, he was the top performer of our whole middle school, ever," Dawn replied all matter-of-factly.

Clemont was also a close friend of ours, but he was more suited to science and anything technical. Detective work wasn't his style, so he never got involved with what we were up to. I always had him in the back of my mind, however, for backup plans and such.

"The bus should be here shortly, where is Drew?" May asked us, suddenly having a chocolate bar in her hand. She took a bite and I could sense Iris getting angry.

"What happened to not being hungry?" Iris put her hands on her hips and sighed.

"I changed my mind, so sue me," May stuck her tongue out at Iris.

"I swear I am going to throw something at you. So long as it makes you stop," Iris frowned and turned away from May, leaving her alone.

"You could throw a rock," Gary suddenly started giving suggestions.

"Let's not encourage her, okay?" I tried to calm things down, but no one was listening. Suddenly, it was a frenzy of who could create ridiculous ideas for things to throw at May, who was just content with eating her chocolate and ignoring us all.

"You could throw a car," Kenny brought his suggestion to the table.

"How about a table? Like that emoji," Dawn took her turn.

"Ooh! Maybe a nuke? Wait, what emoji?" Gary came in with suggestion number two and of course, a question that wasn't worth answering.

"Okay guys, this is just getting sil-"

"What about a bus?" Serena cut me off and joined in. Everyone went silent as they pictured the thought of Iris throwing a bus. It would slowly make an arc in the air before crashing down on May, who would just sit there and eat without a care in the world. In my head, all I could imagine was May walking through the debris unscathed, taking bites out of her chocolate. It caused my mouth to hang open.

"What's got your funny bone?" Gary nudged my side and I snapped back to reality.

"Nothing," I straightened my blazer and picked up my bag. The bus came into view at the other end of the street and that was when Drew appeared, sprinting across the road.

"I almost overslept, looks like I just made it!" Drew took a deep breath and smiled. He was clearly feeling proud of making it on time. No one wants to be late on the very first day. There was always one, though.

"This is the emoji, Gary," I heard Dawn talking to Gary behind me and he scoffed.

"That just looks stupid," he was probably shaking his head, but I didn't know.

The bus came to a stop and the doors opened. It was a freshly painted bus, black and blue, just like the uniform colours. The windows were all blacked out, so only people on the inside could see through them. I could see the seats, black and leather, with armrests. This was a bus rich people would travel on.

Well, in this case, the elite students of Kalos. Maybe not me and my friends, but we had just made it so who cared how smart we actually were? I would be content with staying bottom of the class all year round and more still.

The doors swung open at that moment and we all got on, one at a time. Clemont was sitting in the middle area of the bus and it was completely packed. He had seats for each one of us somehow, so that was a good thing.

"Are you all ready for the first day?" Clemont asked once the bus had set off again.

"I guess," I was the first to reply. Everyone agreed with me. No one was really ready for the first day but excited? Of course!

"I bet you are so ready, Clemont!" May had a mouthful and Clemont looked at her with a little disgust.

"You know you won't be able to do that in class?" Clemont gestured to the chocolate but May ignored him.

"Do what? Say you are ready?" she clearly understood what he meant but chose to direct attention away from her addiction. "Sorry."

"Sometimes I can't tell if you are serious or not," Clemont frowned, briefly looking out of the window.

"Neither can I," May replied, adding another bite of chocolate to the mix. Iris was preparing to lecture May, but she was ready for it.

"If I hear you bite into that chocolate one more time-"

"It's a rock, car, nuke, bus or whatever thrown at me, right?" May replied from her seat, which was a few rows away from Iris.

"Whatever," Iris replied and then we met the asshole of the school.

"Do you idiots mind shutting up for one god damn second?" someone popped up from their seat, facing the majority of us.

"One," May replied mockingly, bringing a few laughs from the back of the bus. "Okay times up buddy, sit back down,"

"Excuse me? I am your upperclassmen, you do not speak to me like that!" he pointed a finger straight at May, who looked at him like she was going to say 'oh hell no'. However, she took one last bite of her chocolate to finish it.

"Well, how do you want me to speak to you? French? Spanish? Bonjour? Hola?" May scrunched up the wrapped and flicked it across the bus. It landed square on the forehead of Mr Asshole and he gritted his teeth, seething with anger.

"Calm down, Alain, they are not worth it" another voice came from the seat next to Mr Asshole and he finally sat down, face as red as a tomato, however.

"That was fun. This school will be great!" May was feeling a little too excited, maybe something to do with the chocolate she just ate. It was still early in the morning, but she never cared. She was always like this and it was good fun at the best of times.

Besides the little drama, the bus ride went smoothly. We parked outside five minutes before the day started and everyone made their way into the main hall, to find the right locker for their shoes.

Then, before we knew it, the bell had rung and the day was beginning. We all had our class  for the year figured out during the opening ceremony. I was with Serena, May, Misty and Gary. Cilan, Drew, Kenny, Dawn and Clemont were in another class. There were three in total across each year, so, of course, the school was huge. The size could accommodate for each and every student with ease.

I slid open the classroom door and walked in, the others trailing behind. We picked our seats for the year, awkwardly scattered around the middle and sat down, just in time for the homeroom teacher to arrive.

"Good morning everyone," he said as he rushed to the front of the room, giving everyone time to take their seats. "I am Mr Sycamore, a science teacher. I will be your homeroom teacher for this year. The first year is usual the simplest of each year. I trust you will all work your hardest, however, to make this year great. Any questions?"

May raised her hand and I was shocked to see no chocolate anywhere. Maybe she was listening to Iris and taking things seriously.

"I have two," she said and I had a slight idea as to what she might ask.

"Go ahead," Sycamore nodded and then smiled at May.

"One, what is the eating policy in classrooms?" she asked. She just had to ask.

"Strictly no eating in any classroom, unless it is your lunch break" Sycamore stated like it was a rule drilled into his mind.

"When is lunch?" May asked her second question. I was sure she was already being profiled as the harbinger of food.

"12:30, for one hour" Sycamore answered instantly again and gestured to the whole of the class once more. "Any more questions?"

I used the silence to look around briefly. There were quite a few people in our class. It was bigger than the middle school ones we had, that was for sure. I had to wonder if anyone knew the positions we all ranked in the entrance exams, besides Sycamore, of course.

"Well then, let's get started with today's attendance and then we shall begin assigning roles," Sycamore brought out a big folder and a pen. He opened up the folder and unscrewed the pen lid, spinning the pen around in his fingers.

We spent the rest of the time assigning roles. Sycamore promised that a rota for board-cleaning duties would be made among other things. Two class representatives were made. One was a boy called Calem and the other, somehow, was Serena. Other things were sorted and then we had our first class of the year. English. The rest of the day flew by and then lunch came around.

I was walking with May, catching up to the others. She was itching to eat some chocolate when Mr Asshole passed us. They both looked at one another briefly as we continued towards the cafeteria.

"He really is annoying, isn't he?" I asked May, who shook her head.

"I think he is trying to enjoy this just as much as I am. Except, he gets annoyed and I laugh and win...!" May practically jumped through the doors of the cafeteria and she had her lunch in her hands within seconds, charging straight at the table the rest of the gang were sat at.

I slowly followed and took my seat, joining in with the conversation as it was happening.

"So far, I am having a good day. Although, everyone seems a little strange," Misty was the one to say this and I saw Cilan raise an eyebrow.

"What do you mean? I have noticed some of the older students are constantly on edge. Like, if you don't perform you get bullied, that's what it seems like. Everyone must be pressured to be the best, or face the consequences" Cilan's words were probably true. He was good at profiling. That made things kind of scary, knowing that we could be bullied for simply failing a few questions.

"So what?" Kenny shrugged like it was no problem. "If anyone has a problem they can come to me directly and tell me. I don't mind."

"You make it sound like you want to bash some heads together and you haven't even done any homework let alone a test," Dawn sighed but Kenny shrugged again.

"So what?" was all he replied with.

"Anyway, we have more pressing matters," I diverted everyone's attention to the real matter at hand.

"Oh right, The Investigation Club," Iris nodded and everyone suddenly went into full focus mode. It must have been weird for anyone eavesdropping, seeing everyone relaxed and then suddenly boom! Everyone is focusing and in a huddle.

"Well, we need room to work with, forms to create the club, permission to create it, permission to use a certain room and an advisor" I brought up the list from the top of my head and everyone let out a deep sigh.

"It sounds like so much work, when you think about it, sure. But, it won't be that hard. It may take more than just today. We'll get it done, though," I assured everyone it would be done. After a few smiles appeared, I was content with the reactions.

After lunch, we finished up the rest of our first day and then got straight to work. There was a free room at the end of the corridor that we had our class, just like middle school. Iris, Cilan, Misty and Serena all went to the student council to sort things out. The rest of us waited outside the free classroom, wondering what the response might be. We had over five members. All we needed was an advisor and I knew for a fact Iris's Mom was a PE teacher at the school. Whether she was already an advisor, was another question.

While in the middle of my thoughts, the others came walking down the corridor, with serious business looks on their faces.

"Everything is pretty much in order, we just have to each fill out and submit a form and have them formally accepted with signatures by Iris, who we decided to just put as our club leader and the advisor, if we can find one" Cilan explained the situation and then I proposed my idea of having Iris's Mom as our advisor.

"Well, she isn't advising a club of her own. She is the support teacher, so the main teacher takes care of sports clubs. Even if she was or does end up taking one under her wing, she can still be our advisor. My Mom won't even half-budge into our business, so it will be so easy," Iris smiled and nodded, seemingly agreeing with me.

"Let's make it happen then, get these forms filled out and signed, let's go!" Cilan shouted and this made the excitement rush through me. I couldn't help but smile as I began to fill out a form. Everyone else murmured with excitement, our passion for detective work coming out to the surface as we all began to furiously write across the forms. I could feel the excitement in the air. The feeling of wanting tomorrow to come so we could finally begin.

I was ready for the club to begin. Tomorrow was going to be the first day of activities. We were finally going to get started. Whether it was going to be watching DVDs, studying novels and newspapers or just relaxing for a little bit after a hard day, I was prepared for anything. Even solving a real murder case. That was our end-of-year goal.

We could avenge my father's death.

As a team.

It was all beginning tomorrow!
