Chapter 10: Sticks and Stones

Warnings: bad language (but their all censored, so....)

*Virgil's POV*

I was slinking and sulking back to this raging dumpster fire called Crofters high, head glued down to the pavement, when I spotted the embodiment of the sun (or at least his light up shoes), bounding up next to me.

Patton's phone went off as he approached, the annoying sound ringing in my ears, as I glared slightly, but not as harshly as I would, say, at Roman.

"Good morning Anx!" He chirped loudly, as I grunted in response.

I am not a morning person.

"Patton, space." I grumbled, as he gasped quietly and backed up.

"Sorry, Anx." He said, as his smile returned brighter than ever.

His phone went off again, but he ignored it, and so did I, him turning it to vibrate. He waited a bit, before speaking. "Silly phone, you can't keep going off." Patton chuckled.

"How was your morning?" He asked, after vibrating his phone.

"Just peachy." I said, sarcastically, as I could practically feel Patton's eyes looking concerned as we kept walking down the sidewalk in the chilly air.

His pocket vibrated, making him notice that he's been texted once again, and I looked at it, confused. Has he always been this popular?

"What's wrong?" He asked, concerned, grabbing my sleeve and stopping me, probably going to comfort me because he felt bad.

I opened my mouth to tell him to back off cause of how early it was and how I didn't want to talk about it, when I froze, my eyes growing wider with shock.

Patton looked terrible.

He had huge bags under his red puffy eyes, his nose was running slightly and was bright red from irritation, he had tear tracks running down his cheeks, and his smile looked plastered on to his face like a mask.

"Patton, what happened to you?" I asked, a small tad bit of worry coming out of my own voice.

"Oh it's nothing, I pro-" Patton started, before his phone vibrated again, and since I wasn't looking down at the ground, contemplating how much this school sucks and the intense metaphor of the ants I saw on the ground represented us students, I could look at his reaction when his phone went off.

It was fear.

Patton was scared when his phone went off.

"Patton, what's going on?" I asked, more firmly.

"It...um...it's uh.... nothing for you to worry about, Anx. What's going on with you? Is your parents giving you trouble? I know my Nana and I don't always get along either." Patton said, dodging the subject. He looked nervous, frightful, anxious.

That's my job.

"Patton." I said, firmly, as he winced, looking away.

"I-" He started, but then the bell rang, and Patton all but ran of, leaving me in the dust.

"Bye Anx, I'll see you after school!" Patton said, that fake plastered smile on his face as he ran off.

I sighed, annoyed and confused and a little, tiny bit worried.

'Patton, what are you hiding?' I thought, before I bumped into someone. Already agitated, I scowled, snapping at the person. "Watch were your going, you âsshat!" I hissed, as I intended to move on to go to class.

A hand grabbed my shoulders and I felt tingles down my spine.

"Hello, faggot." The voice said, and I turned around to see the same bully, with much faded injuries. His loser lackey was nowhere to be seen.

"You? I thought you learned your lesson when you got beat up, but I guess you can't teach stupid." I said, and he huffed, tightening their grip on my shoulders.

He never relaxed, but continued. "We're not here for you. We're here for the person who beat us up defending you. We wanna give them ten fold. Do you even know who saved you, fâggot?"

"Do you know you need a breath mint from all that dîck you suck, man?" I retorted, making his face flush with rage, as he looked ready to hit me. I braced for impact, but....

Nothing happened.

"We'll go find them and give them 20 times the pain, just for that, fâggot." The bully said, as he dropped me, almost throwing me to the floor.

"See you later, fâggot." He called, as he stormed off to his next class.

I just kinda sat there, confused. He did have a point.
Who did saved me?
And why?

*Patton's POV*

I was looking around nervously, heading to the bathroom to clear my eyes. I didn't get much sleep last night, so I'm a bit groggy and disoriented.

My phone buzzed again and I groaned, slamming it on the countertop before I splashed water on my face. "C'mon, Patton. It'll be ok. Just make it through the day with a smile, and then you can go home." I said, giving myself a small positive Patton pep talk.

"Well, well, well." Someone said from behind me.

I turned around to find out who it was, but a blinding flash of light struck me instead. I fell back, gasping in shock, as I rubbed my sore eyes.

"There, photograph evidence of you. Now you can't run from us. He'll track you down for sure for that shiner you gave him. He'll give you two for free." The smaller kid said, laughing. The lackey.

"Just....stop....you already tormented me enough through my phone! Just stop!" I said, tears in his sore eyes.

"Aw, are you feeling sad, crybaby? Why don't you cry then. Cry, mommies boy, cry....oh wait, you don't have a mommy, do you? Ha ha!" He teased, causing tears to well up in my eyes, as I turned away, shutting them.

"Anyway, I'll be seeing you after school. You'll get your punches and them move on with life as long as you don't interfere with us picking on the fâggot again." The lackey said, threatening me, as I opened my eyes, a fire igniting in them when they threatened to hurt my emo.

I took a deep breath. "He is not. And I will never stop fighting for him." I said, as agressively as I could.

"Then get used to this, crybaby Nana's boy." He teased, before walking out, laughing at my misery.

I sniffled, as I slid down back to the floor, seeming like I'm going to miss my classes.

I pulled out my phone to text Roman.

"Hey Roman, can you tell my teacher I'll be a bit late to class. I'm helping a kid in the bathroom. :)"

"Sure thing, Patton. I hope their ok. :)"

"Thanks Roman! :)"

'Yeah, I hope he is too.' I thought, setting my phone down and curling up, sniffling.

My phone vibrated once more, and I just ignored it, curling up tighter.

"Looks like I've been cornered." I said outloud, trying to make myself feel better.

It wasn't working. I looked in the mirror, my watery smile making the tears fall faster.

"Man, this corner is hot. It's 90° over here." I joked, trying to get my face to actually smile.

It wasn't working.

I hummed the Winnie the Pooh then song to make myself feel better, but that wasn't working very well either.

"Well, today sure did a 180." I said, as I cried to myself in the bathroom.

Suddenly, the door slammed open, and I whipped my head up to see the bully.

"No! Please! Stop!" I screamed, as they pinned me to the ground, one fist in the air.

"Nice try, Pat. This is going to hurt." They said, as they slammed their fist down into my eye socket.

Pain erupted in my skull, before I saw the black spots cover my vision and I blacked out.

*Roman's POV*

I was waiting for Patton to come out of the bathroom, hopefully done helping this boy.

But he never came before the bell rang.

I hurried out of the classroom, unsure of what bathroom Patton was in and what was going on with his friend.

In my persuit of the puffball, I ran smack dab into Anx, sending him crashing down to the floor.

"Watch were your going!" He snapped, before looking to see it was I, the magnificent Roman, that knocked him over.

"Oh, Anx, I am so sorry. I didn't see you." I said, helping the emo up to his feet.

"No big deal. Have you seen Patton?" Anx asked, as I heard concern in his voice.

"Last time I heard of him, he was helping a kid in the bathroom." I said, confused.

"Which bathroom?" Anx asked, as he grabbed my shoulders.

"What seems to be the conundrum this time, Anx?" Logan asked, practically popping up out of nowhere, in the usual monotonous way he does.

"Good to see you too, Microsoft nerd." I said, chuckling to myself at my great nickname.

"I don't know, but Patton isn't himself today. I'm....worried about him." Anx said, and Logan and I nodded

"Well, let us embark on a quest to find Patton!" I shouted, as I fist pumped the air, ready for battle.

"Alright, Sir sing a lot, let's go find Patton.

"Right on, Jdelightful." I retorted right back at him.

Logan just sighed, as he followed behind the two, calling Thomas to meet them at the stairs to the Pit.

"Patton!" I shouted, as we began our search for the missing member.
