Chapter 8: Grandma Tania

Souls never die, but always on quitting one abode pass to another. All things change, nothing perishes. The soul passes hither and thither, occupying now this body, now that... As a wax is stamped with certain figures, then melted, then stamped anew with others, yet it is always the same wax. So, the Soul being always the same, yet wears at different times different forms.  - Pythagoras

"There's a what!?!"

Erin collapsed on the floor and Drake immediately carried her to the nearest sofa that was vacated by Motoki and Jeremy. Attorney Nakajima grabbed the wireless phone on the office table and dialed the police hotline, glancing briefly at his secretary who was picking up papers and folders she accidentally let go after hearing Yuri's news.

The Kawaguchi head continued to sit still while the ladies of the family went to their husband/brother's arms for support. Touya appeared behind Yuri looking as stressed as his younger sister, "I've already told the maids not to approach the body until the police come. Needless to say, a number of the servants looked quite shocked. Pardon for the two of us deciding but we had two of the stable employees guard the area..."

"It's okay Touya. It was a wise decision. I'm glad no one questioned your authority."

"I would gladly just accept any order in situations like that."

Attorney Nakajima at that time has just placed the phone down, "Master Drake... I have already contacted the police and they will be sending an investigation team as soon as possible."

"Which would probably take a few hours judging from the trip we had yesterday... am I right?"

Motoki nodded and the Shinobu siblings walked back inside, Touya holding Yuri's hand possessively... "What are we going to do now?"

"We wait. No one leaves this place until everybody has been cleared."

Tatsuya stood and shouted at the calm Drake, "what? You want us to stay in this God forsaken place?!"

"I'm no police officer but I know that since we are all here at the time the body was found... there is a possibility that the killer is still among us. Besides, the police will say the same thing as Drake did..."

Motoki nodded at Jeremy's statement and turned to Drake, "Would you like me to call on a meeting with everyone in the manor?"

The Higuchi heir nodded, "yes. I'll meet with them in the lobby. Ran, I'm leaving Erin to you. Stay here while she rests or better yet take her back to her room. Attorney Nakajima, I would like to ask you to come with me as I speak with everyone in this place. I don't think I have been introduced properly yet. Uncle Takumi, you and your children may go into the rooms I have assigned for your use. For security purposes, please do not go out of your rooms much and I'll have employees roam around the corridors."

Tatsuya gritted his teeth, "you don't have to sugarcoat it Law. I know you are treating us like we planned this whole thing."

Drake's eyes narrowed and Akio tried to cover his younger brother's mouth but the latter just pried the oldest Kawaguchi's hand off. Yuri sighed and removed her hand from Touya's before she spoke,

"If that is what you want to believe Kawaguchi Tatsuya, I'm not interested in stopping you. If you say you don't want the protection offered then that's better. It is easier for us to focus on those who wanted to be safe."

Tatsuya charged towards Yuri and grabbed a handful of her shirt, "I wasn't talking to you bitch."

Touya and Jeremy both made a move, but it was Jeremy who managed to grab the hand holding Yuri's shirt and moved himself in between the two. Glaring darkly at the second child of the Kawaguchis,

"Be careful of the words coming from your mouth asshole...or I'll make you regret it."

"Jeremy, that's enough. Takumi, do control your children's action while inside my client's home or I'll be forced to do something to put him in line."

Takumi Kawaguchi frowned at Attorney Nakajima's statement but had moved to pull his son away from Jeremy who was ready to fight. Yuri dusted off her shirt and smiled weakly, "I could have handled that myself but thank you Jeremy."

Touya crossed his arms and has this murderous look on his face when the Kawaguchis, especially Tatsuya, went pass him. Yuri's eyebrow rose when Suzuki patted his brother's cheek gently and smiled, "what was that about big brother? Do you know them?"

The older Shinobu's glare only softened when he turned to the pouting face of his younger sister, "Nope. It's the first time I've even seen them Yuu... but for some reason I have this feeling of resentment towards that family."

"Not surprising Touya. I've hated them the first time I met them too."

Rainier gaped at Motoki and Drake chuckled, "looks like my third-degree relatives are being hated and I can't blame any of you. Yuri, I know this is a big task for you but can you try to get a bit of information about the dead? I hate that I don't even know heads or tails about the person."

Yuri bowed politely and Drake lightly bonked her on the head, "As you wish Master Drake... I can handle things but is this wise? My brother and I were the first to discover the body among everyone here."

"What my sister said makes sense... we are also possible suspects."

Jeremy scratched his head, "I'll go with Yuri instead then since I was with everyone earlier. Argh damn! Why do I feel like this all happened before?"

"Because it did lady Takahashi..."

An old woman with a cane slowly walked inside the room with Motoki and Rainier running to assist her towards the nearest chair. Jeremy scratched his head and pouted, "Grandma Tania... how many times have I told you that I'm a boy? Please stop calling me lady Takahashi."

The old lady ignored the boy and turned to face the Higuchi's attorney, "Jou-kun... why haven't I've been introduced to the young master? You promised that I can talk to him as soon as he arrives! And I was the last!"

Attorney Nakajima stood from his chair and kissed the old woman on her cheek, "I'm sorry Aunt Tania. You were already asleep by the time the master and his friends came in so we didn't disturb you."

"Ah you always have reasons ready Jou-kun, that's why I've always hated lawyers. Young master Daichi, I've waited for a long time to be able to meet with you again."

Drake stood and bowed politely to the old woman, "my name is Drake Law, ma'am. It is my pleasure to meet you."

"So you are named that now... that's a good name. I can see everyone else is here... this means it's time again."

"It's time? For what?"

Jeremy sighed and Motoki smiled softly as he turned to the four others who looked terribly confused by the old lady, "don't take everything seriously...she's technically the oldest living person in this house. Old man Higuchi used to be very fond of her when he was alive. She claims she was a reincarnation of a slave during the time of this house's first owner and often calls us differently. She calls me Motohiko and Jeremy is called Junko."

Jeremy rolled his eyes and gave the old lady a kiss on the cheek, "Grandma... have you eaten breakfast?"

"Oh thank you lady JunKo... in fact I haven't... thank you for thinking about a lowly servant like me but before that I would like to give my respects to the other nobles if I may."

Jeremy sighed again and Yuri lightly patted the boy's arm, "I don't think there's any harm in letting her believe what she wants. So you're Lady Junko, huh Jeremy?"

The boy sighed and lightly pushed the grinning girl closer to him, "don't call me that or I'll have to make you pay..."

While the two were bickering, Rainier walked in front of the old lady and smiled, "Ma'am, would you like to have your breakfast here instead? I can ask one of the maids to cook anything that you might want..."

Grandma Tania smiled back as she stared at Rainier's face, "you haven't changed Lady Raina... I am awfully glad you managed to be with master Daichi in this lifetime."

"Um... I'm Rainier Minamoto, ma'am."

"Ah that's what you are called now... but deep inside that exterior... I can always recognize you my lady..."

Rainier and Drake exchanged confused looks as the old lady giggled like a young schoolgirl. Yuri scratched her head and tugged on her brother's sleeve, "big brother ...I'm going ahead. Time is wasted."

Yuri bowed politely and placed her hand on top of the old lady's, "It was nice meeting you ma'am. "

Grandma Tania blushed a little and squeezed the younger girl's hand, "it is my pleasure to meet you again Master Yukinori... I have always wanted to be able to talk to you like this."

Jeremy glared at the old lady and tugged on Yuri's free hand, "let's go Yuri. We are losing time."

"Huh? Right... um, we have to go. I'll be pleased if we could have another talk some other time. Please do not allow yourself to roam around without a companion ma'am. It's dangerous. Big brother, we'll be going! Jeremy stop dragging me! I can walk!"

"Lady Junko never changed...ah Master Daichi, please do not let my presence hinder whatever you are supposed to do..."

Drake cleared his throat and nodded, "er. Attorney ... President Nakajima. Let's go. Ran, take care of Erin and Grandma Tania."

Rainier nodded and watched as the four went out of the door. He sighed deeply and adjusted Erin's head on the pillow, aware of the awkward silence but does not know how to go about it...

"Um... I'll get you something to eat, Grandma Tania. Please stay with Erin for a bit while I try to get hold of a maid for us. Will that be all right?"

"Of course Lady Raina... I will not be going anywhere."

Rainier shook his head and walked out of the room in search of a maid he can order for the food. Grandma Tania smiled sadly as soon as the younger man was out of sight...

"I wish everyone can live this one out or my waiting for more than a hundred years will be for nothing."
