Chapter 53

The swirly feeling returned and when they solidified they were still in the bathroom.

"Oh no," Zeke said. "It didn't work. We screwed up somehow and changed the past and now we're stuck in a parallel universe. You shouldn't have ordered those drinks! Or maybe Milosh didn't keep his mouth shut about the time travel and told me all about it when he went back out there."

"Relax, man, this is a different bathroom. See? The tile's a different pattern. Also Milosh is gone. If it hadn't worked wouldn't he still be standing here?"

"I don't know. You think I understand how Milosh works? He's a weird dude."

"Indeed he is," Max said. "Well, let's take a look outside this bathroom and see if we can figure out where and when we are."

"Hey I recognize this place," Zeke said as they peeked out the door. "Isn't this Smelly Pete's Tavern?"

"Oh yeah," Max said. "It's been a bit since I've been in here. What with the whole lifetime ban and everything. But yeah, I used to hang out here a lot. Oh crap!"

"What?" Zeke asked.

"Don't look now, but we're sitting at the bar. Sarah's there, too."

"What? Again? Is it just me or have we spent a lot of time sitting at bars?"

"We have. And if we keep hopping back in time to bars we're likely to keep running into ourselves."

"What are we talking about over there anyway?" Zeke asked.

"It sounds like we're talking about seeing into the future and I'm telling you guys about Skip the prophet. I remember that. It's kind of ironic if you think about it, because if we'd known we were hiding in the bathroom this whole time we could have just come over here and asked ourselves about the future and saved ourselves a lot of hassle."

"Yeah, but we didn't do that then so we can't talk to our past selves now."

"You think I don't know that?" Max said. "I sat through the same boring lecture you did. I'm aware."

"I think I need to take a leak," they heard the Zeke at the bar say. "I guess since you're still cuffed to me you're going to have to come along for the adventure."

"Well, okay, but don't expect me to hold your willy for you," the Max at the bar said.

"Crap! We're coming over here," Zeke said. "We're going to run into ourselves and get stuck here!"

"Not so fast," Max said as he grabbed a black marker from one of his pockets. He peeled off a few squares of toilet paper and scrawled "Out of Service" on it. Then he pulled out a piece of gum, chewed on it quickly, pulled it out of his mouth, and used it to stick his toilet paper sign to the bathroom door. He slammed it shut just in time to hear their past selves talking on the other side of the door.

"Aw man," past Zeke said. "I really needed to go."

"Fear not, old buddy," past Max slurred. "We can always go outside. What is nature if not one gigantic toilet?"

"Wait here a minute, Sarah. We'll be right back."

"I think we're gone," Max said. "We could go out there and order another round of drinks."

"Yeah, but Sarah's still out there, remember?" Zeke said. "Maybe we ought to just go through the time travel door again."

"But I'm thirsty," Max whined.

Suddenly they heard the bathroom door handle jiggle and a familiar looking guy walked in whistling to himself and carrying a couple cameras.

"Oh no, not this guy," Zeke groaned as he recognized Sweaty Jim.

"Hey, didn't you see the out of service sign?" Max shouted. "What's the big idea?"

"Oh hey, sorry. I was just coming in to set up some surveillance equipment. Wait, is this the men's room? I'm in the wrong place. My bad. Hey wait a minute, don't I know you?"

"No," Zeke said. "Go away."

"We seriously don't have time for this," Max said as he grabbed the plunger and bonked Sweaty Jim over the head with it.

"Ow, what did you do that for?" Sweaty Jim asked as he rubbed his head.

"Clearly this calls for something more solid. I know just the thing." Max unfolded the time travel door and swung it at Sweaty Jim. It connected solidly and this time he collapsed in an unconscious heap on the floor.

"Crap, that guy's probably got the biggest mouth of anyone I've ever met. He's going to tell everyone about this and screw up everything," Zeke said.

"Nah, it'll be all right. I clocked him pretty good. I doubt he'll remember anything when he wakes up. And as long as the time travel door still works, it means we always did this. I think we've pressed our luck a little too hard here though. I guess a drink will have to wait. We're not making anywhere near fast enough progress though. I'm going to turn the dial a little farther this time." With that he cranked the dial to the left and they disappeared through the door again.
