Chapter 23
"Take it off!" Esther shouted at the stage.
"Those are two strange looking strippers," Danielle said with a frown.
"Different strokes for different folks, sweetie," Pauline said as she let out a loud whistle. "I think the little one is hot!"
"Yeah, but that old one looks really familiar to me," Danielle said. "I think he was that weird guy who threw a liquor bottle at my head back on Earth when I asked him if he was Dr. Octavius."
"Probably just a doppelganger," the chicken known as Lulu said. "I'm going for another round of drinks. You girls in or what?"
"You'd better believe we're in," Esther said. "Make mine a double while you're at it."
The two strippers shambled awkwardly on stage for about ten minutes and then suddenly disappeared in a flash of light only to be replaced by two massively muscular men in skimpy underwear. They both sported confused looks on their faces. The chickens all let out shrill shrieks of approval.
"Now that's an impressive magic trick," Esther said as she clapped loudly.
Lulu had returned with the drinks and thrust one into Danielle's hands. She had no idea what it was, but it gave off a pleasantly sweet smell and she decided it tasted pretty good after she ventured to take a sip.
The current song came to an end and the two confused looking strippers shuffled off the stage. A spotlight came on the stage and a fox sporting washboard abs leaped up through a trapdoor. He raised his clenched fists above his head and began gyrating his hips in rhythm with the music. The chickens cackled and screamed in excitement. Danielle felt a little weird watching a furry animal man gesticulating about suggestively, so she focused in on her drink trying to figure out what the heck it was. In the end the closest approximation she could come up with was marshmallow fig butterscotch with a hint of soy sauce. Even that didn't quite seem right.
When she looked up again she saw that Pauline was now sitting on a chair on the stage with a giant smile on her face while the stripper grinded on her lap. The human body she currently inhabited didn't seem to be slowing her down at all. The other chickens were all screaming hysterically.
A group of parrots who were also shrieking at the top of their lungs tried to edge their way towards the stage.
"Stop crowding us," Esther said as she shoved one of the parrots backward.
"Stop hogging the front row," the parrot said as she shoved Esther in retaliation. "Other people want to get an eye-full."
"Don't touch my friend," the chicken known as Denise said as she shoved the parrot.
"Don't touch my friend," another parrot said as she shoved Denise.
Soon a full-fledged brawl had erupted between the chickens and the parrots and Danielle found herself stuck right smack in the middle of it. She tried to grab ahold of the stage to keep her balance, dropping her drink in the process. The glass hit the floor and shattered, sending shards flying in all directions. Esther was on top of one of the parrots slamming her head repeatedly into the floor while Denise, Stella, and Lulu were each engaged in their own fights. A bright pink parrot approached Danielle with a menacing look in her eyes. "You want some of this?" she barked at Danielle.
"No thanks," Danielle attempted to hold up her hands in a placating manner.
The parrot smacked her across the face.
"Oh no you didn't," Danielle said as she shoved the parrot. She couldn't help but notice she was definitely feeling the effects of all the alcoholic beverages she had consumed over the course of the night. The parrot flew at her again but she dodged out of the way and then managed to land an uppercut under her beak. The parrot dropped to the ground as Danielle rubbed her knuckles. This was the first fist fight she had gotten in since that time in fourth grade when that snotty Jessica Blevins had called her an ugly doody head and pushed her down. She had to admit this was kind of fun, just as she had gotten quite a kick out of giving Jessica Blevins a bloody nose and a black eye back in the day. She was still savoring the memory when another parrot came barreling in from her left side and tackled her to the ground. They tussled for a few minutes before Danielle managed to roll on top and pin her to the ground.
Suddenly she felt a pair of strong hands grab her by the shoulders and drag her to her feet. A huge rhinoceros kept her arms pinned behind her back with one hand as he grabbed one of the parrots with the other. Another rhino had broken up the skirmishes between the other chickens and the parrots.
"I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you ladies to leave," the first rhinoceros said as he ushered then unceremoniously towards the door.
"Our friend is still getting a lapdance on the stage," Esther protested.
Danielle looked over her shoulder and saw Pauline with a gleeful look on her face as she ran her hands all over the stripper's body. Or perhaps more accurately running Maurice's hands all over the stripper's body. It occurred to Danielle that perhaps Maurice wouldn't like the liberties Pauline was taking while in possession of his body but there wasn't much she could do at the moment to put a stop to it.
"Your friend can meet you outside," the rhinoceros said with a sneer. "You've got to go."
"But-" Esther said.
"I said you've got to go. Do I look like I'm playing around?"
"You look familiar, big boy," Esther said. "Are you sure we haven't tangled before?"
The rhinoceros let out a grunt and shoved them all out the front door. There was a brief moment when the parrots and the chickens were staring each other down in the street, but then cooler heads prevailed and they went their separate ways. The chickens all burst out giggling.
"Come on ladies," Esther said. "I know a place nearby that's open all night where we can get some cheap drinks!" They began waddling noisily down the street. Unsure of what else to do, Danielle followed after.
