Chapter 9
Three things were going through my mind. On one hand.... my brain was working overtime to try and figure out why he was kissing me. I was pulled out of the glory of the kiss when he breathed into my mouth.
"What in the hell?!" I was glaring at him but he seemed unfazed by what he did. Not just unfazed-he was still breathing heavily into the air unaware I had even moved. He looked like a sleeping fish out of water. I reached forward and pushed on him to demand an answer and his hand shot up and grabbed my wrist.
"Let go of me you big oaf!"
The second thing i noticed while trying to pull my wrist from his grasp was that I felt like I was drowning in my own sweat. Not in the "I had just been running" way, it was more along the lines of "I just went for a swim in the river and just happened to forget about it" kind of way.
I broke away from him and looked to see him just staring at me when a sharp pain went through my arm. That was the third thing I noticed a minor pain in the crook of my arm that was soon becoming top priority when the pain moved into my chest. I collapsed onto the floor, my breathing coming out in labored pants.
One thought. He'd brought me here to infect me. To take me down when he saw I lived through it the first time. Maybe this was the world's cruel revenge for not dying from it the first time.
"We're gonna lose her!" That was not his voice, let alone a guys voice. What in the hell is going on?
I looked up to find myself in a old looking room, when another wave of pain shot through me I was in too much agony to question anything. Voices overlapped and rushed in one ear and out the other. Closing my eyes and I was back in the tree sitting where I had been. But this time the infected were closing in on me.
They moved over each other trying to get me. Hungry groans filled the air along with snarls of the ones close to their next meal. Everything was slow as if they were moving through molasses- like time had purposefully slowed down so I could feel their anticipation for my death. More arms reached through the hole in the floor and I shut my eyes.
"This is wrong. It's all wrong."
"Will somebody hold this girl down!"
My arms wouldn't move from my sides as I called out for help and tried to grab something. Anything. Another sharp pain in my arm followed by a cool feeling, like ice running through my veins, silenced me. It was heaven to the burning in my chest.
My eyes were heavy but I couldn't sleep here. Not surrounded by the infected.
"Now is not the time to fight. Sleep."
A whispered reassurance floated through the air and my frazzled brain gave into the welcoming darkness.

"PUT THE KNIFE DOWN!"
I ducked under the "nurses" outstretched arms that were trying to stop me from leaving. She and two men were in the medical room they were keeping me in.
"Then let me out of here!"
I refused to listen to them trying to tell me what was going on. I refused the food and needles they tried to force on me. I wanted out. I wanted far away from a place where I woke up restrained and with guards outside the locked door.
Have you ever woken up, so tired that you don't know where you are for a second and you panic a little? That was basically me. I panicked a little... OK maybe it was more than a little but you couldn't blame me. Everyone in this world wanted to kill you for what you had or... well they didn't scavenge for food like the rest of us did.
"You're awake!" I turned from the nurse and men to see the only people in the world that I could ever trust. I didn't even care when they took the knife from me. All I cared was that Chris and Izzy stood in that doorway.
I looked at them pointedly once I came to my senses.
"You have got a lot of explaining to do."
