The loud blaring of the alarms made me think of covering my ears to keep the headache from growing, but in the split second we had from opening the door, an infected looked up from the body beneath it and growled a warning at us. Slowly it stood and we backed up like the prey we were without weapons to fight. A girl with dark brown hair who looked similar to Izzy almost ran us over trying to escape,and nearly took all of us down once she saw that we were just standing there. She stood up straight and started cussing every word she could think of, which was honestly a lot. When she was interrupted by the snarls from behind her, she turned with a glare.  The look she gave to the infected looked like she was angry that it had interrupted her. 

She pulled a knife from her waistband and drove it into the creatures skull, and it made a sickening squelch as she pulled it back out that made me cringe. Sure, I had killed plenty of them but it was always with a gun and from a distance. No one wanted to be up close to someone who would give them a death sentence. The sounds of an oncoming  hoard brought us all back to reality.

"Move! They're not going to wait for us to leave!" She pulled Izzy after her and Chris and I followed close behind them.

"Where are we going Jess? We don't exactly have a means of escape! We-" I was cut off by Izzy pulling out the keys to the jeep as we came to the corner of the last house before the cars. I peered around the corner to make sure the infected weren't in sight but I knew I shouldn't get my hopes up. The parking lot was next to the forest, and infected roamed about. The green trees slowly losing all their color and fall quickly approached. That will be perfect, back to cold weather and no place to stay.

"There are at least six of them walking around but we should make it in a minute when they clear out. But we'll need to run for it."

There was something nagging at the back of my mind as Izzy handed the keys to her sister. "Keys to one of the survivor jeeps. Percy's da- umm- she was given them and you're the fastest of us all when it comes to running. You run we'll follow, so get those doors open quick."

My face fell at the thought of my dad missing. Hey, at least he wasn't here for all of this.

Chris looked at me and I knew from his brown eyes that he was thinking the same thing. "They stocked up the jeeps with food and provisions, we'll take it and leave." We all agreed with Chris but I couldn't help but think of all the children being left behind, their screams chilling the air as we hung onto the corner of the building, waiting for the infected to move out their rotting bodies out of the way. 

Jess turned to us, "Alright here's how it's going to work, I run and thirty seconds after you guys follow me."

We all agreed and she took one last look around the corner. "OK here it goes. Wish me luck." With a fake smile she turned the corner and ran. I watched behind her as one of the infected took notice of her, stumbling to try and catch up. I was about to run after her when Izzy screamed and I turned to see a group of them coming from behind. "We need to go now!" We had no weapons, the only option was to run.

We all turned around the corner and followed after Jess, but by the confused look on her face we could tell we were early to the party. The infected man following her lurched for her as she slid into the drivers seat. She caught its head in the door and slammed it shut, crushing its skull. Pulling the door closed and turning on the engine, we caught up to her and scrambled in. 

"Drive! They're coming!" She stepped on the gas and we fell back in the seats, and she drove towards them. Chris caught on to where she was headed and tried to reach forward and stop her."Are you crazy?! We'll die if we drive through them!"

"Knock it off! I know what I'm doing! Touch the wheel again and I swear I'll chop off your manhood!"

His face turned to fear and he put his hands down to protect himself. I couldn't help but laugh at him and his expression. 

"Hang on guys. It's going to get a little bumpy!" We all braced ourselves, ready to crash into the sea of infected beings. But, at the last second she jerked the wheel and I slammed into Chris. "Ow! Sorry!"

Jess swerved around bodies as they tried to grab the car, hoping to stop their passengers from escaping their dead hands. When the car straightened up I untangled myself from him, "Sorry about that. I wasn't wearing my belt."

"Uh yeah. It's fine." His voice was hard and there was no tone in it.

Did I do something?  Was he mad at me?  I shook my head. Of course I didn't do anything to him. I looked out the windows and watched as the infected attacked the people I had know my whole life and turned them with just a bite. Their bodies convulsed, agonizing screams ripped into my ears and I wondered if my dad had met the same fate as the others here. Did he die painfully? Was he still looking for me? Would I ever see him again? Everyone was quiet as we passed the mangled corpses and left through the gates, which surprisingly were wide open, bringing back the nagging feeling of something being wrong.

Jess was the first to break the somber mood. "Izzy grab the map we need to figure out where we're going to go now." Izzy nodded her head and reached into the glove compartment, pulling out a folded map of California. "It says there is a safe zone in Washington, It'll take two days to get there, only one if we drive nonstop."

Jess nodded her head. "Good where in Washington is it?"

"It says its in Olympia."

"Well then I guess that's where we're going."

We all stayed silent. Anyplace was as good as any, now that everything we ever knew was destroyed. I sighed. Maybe it was where my dad wanted me to go. I thought of how he had raised me, the last eighteen years had been hard with his work but he was always there. Hell, he was the one who thought of the idea of building the walls.

Just then my thoughts clicked. There shouldn't have been infected at the back, there were walls in front of the woods. But you saw the trees. The little voice in my head was right, I did see the trees. So where did the walls go?
