Chapter 22 - Orlando, Baby!
"This wasn't just a one-off event." Jones mutters to another agent, as we collect our thoughts outside the hotel. I was huddled between Ace and Rachael under a blanket as a gentle blast of chilly San Francisco air filled the night. We watched as dazed students were ushered into their parent's cars, mumbling about an emergency. APPSSA had somehow used their knowledge of powers to their advantage, and agents had secured the perimeter and used high-speed technology of some description to erase memories from the students and teachers affected. They replaced Hypno's attack with a small fire started by an electrical fault.
"What do you mean?" I stared up at Jones, his comment catching my attention as we waited for my mother to arrive. He paused before responding.
"There's been other...occurrences in other cities. Normal people that have acquired a power, and conducted a small-scale attack. Luckily the media hasn't caught on yet due to our protection technology."
I glance back at Ace who has a stern look covering his features, as he processes the information like me.
"Wait...so this is something bigger than an old friend getting revenge on his high school bullies?" Rach pipes up from the other side of me, concern cloaking her voice. Jones gravely nods at her words, as my mind begins whirring at a million miles per minute.
"It's like an underground revolution then? That's what Jack kept muttering anyway. Revolution." I said, instantly feeling Ace's arm around my waist tighten under the blanket.
"A dangerous revolution, perhaps." Jones exclaims, turning his head as Mom's Fiat 500 pulls up to the now-empty curb. "We'll send you all information about our next meeting, which should be soon. Goodnight." Ace helped me to my feet and we clambered down the steps towards Mom's car. I hopped in the passenger seat as Ace and Rach scrambled into the back.
"Are you all alright? I heard about what happened. The hotel should get sued, ruining a perfectly good evening like that. I think I'll send an email to the..."
"Mom, it's fine. It wasn't their fault. Plus, we danced before it happened anyway. That's enough for me." I interrupted, not wanting my irritating mother to put the hotel into bankruptcy about something that wasn't their fault.
"It didn't harm any of us, Miss Brown, but thank you for your concern." Ace leant forward in his seat and flashed a dazzling grin at me. Mom smiled at his words and looked away from the road for a second to give me look that said 'he's a keeper'.
I rolled my eyes and focused my eyes on the clear night skies above the street lights. I could make out a few stars glistening through the suburban light pollution, and it instantly gave me déjà vu of when I was younger, Mom and I lived in one of the high-rise buildings downtown. Instead of sleeping early for school the next day (like I was supposed to), I would sit on my window-ledge and gaze up at the stars until my eyes felt heavy.
Life was simpler back then.
There were no secret revolutions, no government agencies, no weird-ass superpowers, no silver-haired speedsters and disappearing best-friends.
But now, my mind was consumed with these countless worries, along with Star Wars fanfictions, Twenty One Pilots lyrics and the current situation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, of course. Mom's car slowed down to a stop, jolting me out of my thoughts.
"Bye, guys. See y'all soon." Ace grinned at me and Rach as he climbed out of the car. "Thanks for the ride, Miss Brown!" He slammed the door and trotted up his driveway, walking quickly without using his powers.
"I might as well get out here too. Thanks for the ride. See ya at swim practice tomorrow, Cass!" Rach scrambled out of the car before Mom could object.
"See you soon, Rachael!" She called before Rach closed the car door and hitched her dress up to walk over the street. To anyone looking out of their window at this hour, they would suspect some teenagers being dropped off home after having a great night of partying, photo booths and spiked drinks. But no, we had just returned from fighting a fellow ex-student, whilst one of us got brainwashed.
We're normal, I swear!
"I'd recommend you get some sleep as soon as we get home, Cass. You look tired and need sleep before swim practice tomorrow." Mom began lecturing as we pulled away into the night.
Three hours later, the bottom of my laptop screen told me it was 2:03am, I was halfway through The Last Jedi, with Rufus snuggled into my side and my earphones jammed in so Mom suspected I was peacefully napping.
Haha, since when did I follow orders?
I paused the movie so I could reach over and grab my half-empty can of Coca Cola without missing any bad-ass Kylo Ren action, but my eyes returned to screen to find an email notification from an unknown sender. Instantly curious, I opened my inbox and clicked on the email. A logo of APPSSA flashed up and my brow furrowed as I began reading the short message.

I leaned back on my pillow, taking in all of this newfound information. Orlando?! I had never left the state of California, and the longest flight I had ever been on was 2 hours. And how on Earth was I going to tell Mom about going to Orlando with a secret government organisation to take down the Earth's biggest villains?! As if on cue, my phone began vibrating and Ace's name flashed onto the screen. I took a moment to plug my earphones in to the small device before accepting his call.
"WE'RE GOING TO ORLANDO, BABY!" I winced and pulled out an earphone as Ace shouted into the phone, his voice full of excitement.
"Jeez, Ace, chill the heck out! You just burst my eardrum." I spoke quietly in response, scolding him whilst whispering.
"Sorry, Cass. But seriously? I've never been to Orlando. Closest I've been is Texas, and that was pretty boring, if ya ask me." He continued, quieting down a bit yet still sounding like a kid in a toy store.
"How are we getting away with this with our parents though? There's no way in hell my Mom is letting me fly alone to another state." I grumbled, whilst running my hand over Rufus' spotted head.
"APPSSA will sort something out, I'm sure. But, darlin', isn't Disneyworld in Orlando?!" I mentally face-palmed at Ace's words.
"Ace, this is basically a mission. We're going to an emergency meeting." I stressed these last two words, pausing before continuing. "I doubt they're gonna let us roam around the city and act like annoying tourists. We're supers and we have a job to do."
Ace paused before replying, and I almost felt bad for dampening his excitement. I soon withdrew my sympathy. "Cass, for just a second let it gooooo, let it gooo! Orlando's basically a whole new wooooorld! And oh, I just can't wait to be kiiiing!" He began singing, transferring between famous Disney songs.
"Ace, I don't think..."
"And we can take a cheesy couple photo infront of the Disney castle. Iconic."
I spent the next 20 minutes mindlessly listening to Ace ramble on about the great wonders of Orlando, whilst my mind was cast away to more serious matters.
I just hoped this global team of enhanced supers could stop whatever this new underground revolution was.
A/N: Hello all! Sorry for the slow updates, I really have no excuse except for a writer's block! Summer has been pretty lazy so far, with me just binge-watching Gilmore Girls, going to prom and going swimming in the sea. But on Friday I fly to Orlando, just like Cass, Rach and Ace will be soon! I decided to add in that location as I'll be going there for 15 days, so I'll be able to write about it with knowledge that I've been there, unlike San Francisco, which I'm conducting research on instead of actually knowing anything about it! So no updates until the very end of July, sorry guys! Have a great month!
