Chapter 2 - There Will Never Be Peace
After scampering the rest of the way home, I waved goodbye to Rachael at my apartment and headed on inside, tripping water into the hallway and up the flights of stairs. Rachael lived a few streets away, and through the dense rain I saw her figure speeding off down the sidewalk. After fumbling around in my bag for my keys, I unlocked my apartment door and was ambushed by Rufus.
"Hey boy! Let me get inside..." I murmured, patting my dog and shuffling into my hallway. I slammed the door behind me and dumped my soggy bag on the floor, before flicking off my Converse and padding through the hallway to my room. Rufus ran into the living room, and came back with one his toys in his mouth.
"I'll play in a minute, let me get changed first." I said, entering my room and beginning to strip down to my underwear. My jeans and hoodie were soaking wet. Gross.
Soon, I was in some leggings and a huge swim team t-shirt, feeling much better after drying myself. As I walked through to the kitchen to get a snack, a sticky note caught my eye on the kitchen counter. I picked it up and read it.
Cascade,
Your punishment has been lifted today, so there's some ice cream in the freezer. You must have missed it all these weeks!
See you soon,
Mom x
I smirked and practically ran over to the freezer. But Mom didn't know that I had actually still been eating a lot of ice cream, especially since the big fight, and...you know.
Still, when I opened the freezer and found 3 tubs of vanilla ice cream, I still let out a squeal. Gosh, I loved my Mom. After grabbing a spoon and a tub, I flopped onto the sofa, grabbing the TV remote. The news flashed onto the screen as I took the lid off of the ice cream tub.
"Breaking News: there has been a downtown attack from Leopard Girl, with 2 dead and 5 injured. More coming up in a moment." The newsreader declared, causing me to choke on my ice cream. Another attack?!
Since the big fight earlier this month, there had been no vigilante attacks. This wasn't good. I decided to FaceTime Quicksilver while the news was about politics.
I grabbed my phone and tapped 'Ace'.
Oh yeah, that was Quicksilver's alter-ego. Ace Pennyworth. We traded alter-egos after the fight, knowing we'd have to stick together.
"Hey, what's up Cass?" Ace asked, his face appearing on my phone screen. From his surroundings, it looked like he was in his room.
"Look on the news, now." I demanded, looking away from the screen to look at the news. The politics was about to finish.
"I can't right now, my dad's watching a program. What is it?"
The newsreader began talking. In a panic, I flipped the camera around so Ace could see the TV, and knelt on the floor infront of it.
"There has been an attack downtown this afternoon by the former hero, Leopard Girl. She mercilessly killed 2 civilians and left 5 injured. For now, the details are unclear, but I',m sure the city is asking one thing, who is going to be stopping this? Hero numbers have been dwindling for a few months now, and our correspondent has been asking members of the public as to what they think."
Ace leaned in on the screen as the TV showed a woman standing on the street, with a microphone being shoved in her face.
"To be honest, I think this all needs to be put under control by the armed forces and police. We've had enough."
The TV then showed another member of the public, a man.
"What we really need is those superheroes that are willing to risk their lives to save the city. Like Blaze Boy, Aqua Girl or Quicksilver. Where have they got to?"
I gasped as the TV displayed three photos of us three. Blaze Boy was smirking at the camera, obviously enjoying the attention. I was looking to the left, distracted by something, and Quicksilver was grinning at the camera too. When was that even taken?
"I remember that photo being taken." Ace muttered from my phone, as the news moved on to another story, I pushed myself back onto the sofa.
"But I don't get it! I thought there was peace in San Fran now!" I complained, digging my spoon into the ice cream.
"There will never be peace, Cass. You know that." Ace reasoned, looking at me through the screen.
"Hmm." I mumbled, shoving the spoon into my mouth.
"What are you eating?"
"Ice cream." I declared, grinning at Ace. He rolled his eyes.
"You practically live off the stuff."
"And? I don't see a problem with that." I exclaimed, pouting.
"Don't blame me when you get fat."
"I won't." I declared, digging the spoon in again. "Anyway, do you have track practice today?"
Ace was in the track team for his school, but of course he couldn't use his powers. Instead, he jogged around the track whilst everyone sprinted to keep up with him. I had seen it with my own eyes.
"Yeah I do. I should probably go and get changed. Don't you have swim practice?" Ace asked. He had also been to watch one of my swim meets once, when Rachael couldn't make it.
That reminded me.
"Yeah, see you later!" I hung up after waving at him, and tapped my text messages. I needed to find out the real reason Rachael wasn't coming to swim practice.
Cass at 4:03pm: Hey, so why aren't you coming to swim practice?
Rach at 4:04pm: just stuff..
Cass at 4:05pm: WHAT STUFF?????????
Rach at 4:06pm: it's nothing important
Cass at 4:07pm: Well then why aren't you coming to swim practice? I think that's important ;)
Rach at 4:08pm: you're so annoying
Cass at 4:09pm: so r u!
Cass at 4:09pm: so why aren't you COMING?!
Cass at 4:09pm: Rach?
Cass at 4:10pm: I will hunt you down >:)
Unsatisfied with her answer, I decided I would do some detective work later. This was suspicious, but Cascade Holmes was on the case.
A/N: HEY GUYS! BTW that last sentence is basically saying Cass is Sherlock Holmes, her surname is not Holmes :) How are y'all doing?
