Home alone

"Jess, you're home early from Kayla's tonight" Jess's mom yelled from the living room, hearing her rustling in the kitchen.

Jess scooped out some pad thai onto a plate and put the rest in the fridge. Her parents were not adventurous eaters and hated spicy food -  but, thinking she'd be sharing with Kayla, she'd ordered it with level 10 chilis. She'd be finishing this food for days.

Jess didn't want to talk about it, so she curtly yelled back a short, "Yes." while she took her food up to her room. As she settled into her beanbag chair, she arranged her laptop on the desk in the corner with her plate on her lap. She leaned across her lap to hit play on Netflix - Pretty Little Liars, again - and as she pulled back her plate slipped, covering her new J. Crew sweater in tamarind sauce.

She didn't know whether to cry or laugh at the sad state of herself. Sighing, she cleaned up what she could, throwing up what landed on the floor, and salvaging most of her meal. Watching the show while she ate, she couldn't stop thinking about how jealous she was of her friend, and how much she wished she had a boyfriend too.

She was happy for Kayla, of course, but she couldn't shake the feeling. She kept returning to something Kayla had said; to just do something - Anything! - towards getting what she wanted.

She'd heard about people meeting over dating websites. Megan, her friend from highschool, had finally confessed at a halloween party that she met her boyfriend Alex through OKCupid, and not at a local bar, as she had first said.

Really, it's not like she was doing anything else, so she decided to just browse the website.
