Jones glanced down at Violet's hand, a sigh escaped his lips, he couldn't believe she was wearing it and the Doctor hadn't notice. They were leaning against the rail watching as the Doctor took Martha's phone, hovering the sonic over it.
''Right, there we go. Universal roaming. Never have to worry about a signal again,'' The Doctor explained handing the mobile back to her.
''No way. This is too mad. You're telling me I can phone anyone, anywhere in space and time on my mobile?'' Martha exclaimed, clearly not believing what her was telling her.
''As long as you know the area code. Frequent flier's privilege. Go on, try it,'' But before Martha could even think about the Tardis let out a shudder which caused all four of them to stumble slightly.
''Distress signal. Locking on. Might be a bit of...'' he was cut off from the sentence when he along with everyone else was knocked to the floor as the Tardis shuddered again, but with a lot more force. ''Turbulence. Sorry. Come on, let's take a look,'' The Doctor spoke quickly after checking that everything was ok.
The moment Jones stepped out of the Tardis he was overwhelmed by the amount of heat that slammed into his body. Violet was just as winded by the sudden burst of heat, as she gripped the Tardis door as it caused a dizzy spell to come over her.
''Distress signal transmitted,'' Violet faintly heard the computer bleep out and she focused on the sound until the dizziness was subdued.
'Whoa, now that is hot,'' The Doctor exclaimed unaware of the effect it was having on his fellow travellers.
''Automated distress signal transmitted,'' Again Violet focused on the voice, although Jones made sure to keep an eye on her encase she did collapse from the heat.
''Whuff, it's like a sauna in here,'' Martha remarked looking over at the Doctor, as a thin layer of sweat had already formed on her forehead.
''Venting systems. Working at full pelt, trying to cool down. Wherever it is we are. Well, if you can't stand the heat,'' The Doctor trailed off as he went to open a big bulky metal door that had Area 30 engraved on it, to reveal two men and a woman coming through it.
''Oi, you lot!'' The younger of the two men shouted pointing at the four of them.
''Get out of there!'' The women shouted and Violet frowned.
''Seal that door, now!'' The first man spoke again.
''How about a please and we might, so stop shouting at us,'' Jones snapped, pausing before them saying ,''Please.''
''Who are you? What are you doing on my ship?'' The woman asked, her voice had lowered in volume, but not by much.
''Are you police?'' The man asked glancing at all of them in turn.
''Why would we be police?'' The Doctor frowned as the question struck him as odd.
''We got your distress signal,'' Martha chipped in.
''If this is a ship, why can't I hear any engines?'' The Doctor questioned and as he did Violet strained her ears. He was right there were no engines.
''It went dead four minutes ago,'' The Woman replied her hands going to rest on her hips, as she stared intently at them.
''So maybe we should stop chatting and get to Engineering. Captain,'' The second man, who had come in with the other two spoke his first words.
''Secure closure active,'' The computer spoke.
''What?'' The woman questioned and it was at that moment, Violet realised something wasn't right. She had gotten over her dizzy spell, so she was now aware of what was happening around her.
''The ship's gone mad.'' The second man spoke shaking his head slightly.
''Who activated secure closure? I nearly got locked in to area twenty seven,'' A younger woman had run into the room slamming the door shut behind her, closing the travellers off from the Tardis, ''who are you?'' She questioned looking over at the group.
''He's the Doctor and I'm Martha. Hello.''
''Violet and this is Commander Michael Jones.''
''Hi,'' Jones added giving a small wave towards the four now stood in front of them.
''Impact projection forty two minutes twenty seven seconds,'' Jones's eyes widened he did not like the sound of that.
''We'll get out of this. I promise,'' Jones liked the sound of that even less. His dislike was only added too when he moved to look out the same porthole he had seen Martha turn to.
''Doctor,'' Martha whispered not believing what she was seeing.
''Forty two minutes until what?'' The Doctor asked ignoring Martha's call for him.
''Doctor! Look,'' Martha urged him to look out the porthole.
''Vi you might want to see this,'' Jones added turning towards the Time Lady.
She sighed and walked over to the window, Jones moved out the way to allow her to see out the small hole. Her eyes immediately widened at what she saw, she had to blink a few times to see if she was being tricked, but unfortunately she wasn't.
''Forty two minutes until we crash into the sun.''
---
A silence had descended over the eight of them. The crew members giving the travellers time to comprehend what was happening.
''How many crew members on board?'' The Doctor suddenly asked.
''Seven, including us,'' The women who seemed to be in charge said furrowing her eyebrows, wondering why he wanted to know.
''We transport cargo across the galaxy. Everything's automated. We just keep the ship space worthy,'' The older of the two men added, given an explanation for the limited number of people on the ship.
''Call the others, I'll get you out,'' The Doctor declared running to upon the door leading to area 30.
''What's he doing?'' The Younger man spoke almost as if he didn't want the Doctor to open the door.
''Finding a way to get us out,'' Jones spoke as if it was the most obvious thing in the universe.
''He can't,'' The woman in charge protested and as the Doctor went to open the door the other women, with her mask on her face leapt in front of him slamming the door shut as blast of heat escaped into the room.
''But my ship's in there!'' The Doctor argued gesturing towards the door.
''In the vent chamber?'' The young man asked his eyes widening.
''It's our lifeboat,'' Violet jumped in before the Doctor got any more agitated by the situation.
''It's lava,'' The older man stated crossing his arms.
''Oh Yay,'' Jones mumbled glancing from the man to the Doctor.
''The temperature's going mad in there. Up three thousand degrees in ten seconds, and still rising,'' The younger woman explained looking over at Jones glaring at him. He just glared back.
'' Channelling the air. The closer we get to the sun, the hotter that room's going to get.''
''We're stuck here,'' Martha spoke worry evident in her voice.
''So, we fix the engines, we steer the ship away from the sun. Simple. Engineering down here, is it?'' The Doctor asked before moving in that direction.
''Yes,'' The woman answered with a nod.
''Impact in forty twenty six,'' Violet had a feeling the countdown at some point was going to get on her nerves.
---
It was only a short walk down into the engine room, although when they entered it looked like an engine room. For starters Violet could work out what or where the engine was, if it was even there at all was another thing she was unsure of.
''Blimey, do you always leave things in such a mess?'' The Doctor exclaimed hoping to get an answer to clue him in.
''Oh, my God,'' The Woman in charge spoke mouth wide open.
''Guessing the answer to that question was a no,'' Jones spoke picking up a random bit of engine, examining it before throwing it haphazardly back down.
''Jones,'' Violet ground out at his careless action.
''What? It's not like it was in a certain place anyway,'' He replied with a shrug.
''Oh, it's wrecked,'' The younger man whined as he looked over the wreckage.
''See,'' Jones remarked and Violet just rolled her eyes.
''Pretty efficiently too. Someone knew what they were doing,'' The Doctor asked noticing how everything seemed to have been taken out carefully, as not one of the actual pieces were broken themselves.
''Where's Korwin? Has anyone heard from him or Ashton?'' The Woman asked and Violet guessed they were the engineers.
''No,'' The older man replied sighing as he took in the wrecked engine for himself.
''You mean someone did this on purpose?''
''Wow, Jones don't you remember coming here before?'' Violet asked after she noticed the view from the window seemed very familiar.
''Oh, we're in the Torajii system. Lovely. You're a long way from home, Martha. Half a universe away,'' Jones nodded at the Doctors comment, confirming he did remember when they last visited the System.
''Yeah. Feels it,'' Martha sighed nodding her head.
''And you're still using energy scoops for fusion? Hasn't that been outlawed yet?'' The Doctor asked as he picked them up off of the floor, where they had been neatly placed down by the vandal.
''We're due to upgrade next docking. Scannell, engine report,'' The woman asked directing it towards the older man.
''No response,'' He replied.
''What?'' She asked, Violet could tell that the heat wasn't the only thing that was making the woman stressed.
''They're burnt out. The controls are wrecked. I can't get them back online,'' He replied slamming his hand down, clearly just as stressed as the captain.
''Oh, come on. Auxiliary engines. Every craft's got auxiliaries,'' The Doctor suggested.
''Yeah that's the law,'' Violet piped up. That was the one and probably only thing she knew about engines.
''We don't have access from here. The auxiliary controls are in the front of the ship,'' The Woman replied sighing again, it seemed as if she was about to give up any second.
''Yeah, with twenty nine password sealed doors between us and them. You'll never get there in time,'' Scannell added.
''Can't you override the doors?'' Martha suggested.
''No. Sealed closure means what it says. They're all dead-lock sealed,'' Scannell replied.
''So a sonic screwdriver's no use,'' The Doctor commented.
''Nothing's any use. We've got no engines, no time, and no chance.''
''Oh, listen to you. Defeated before you've even started. Where's your Dunkirk spirit? Who's got the door passwords?'' The Doctor asked, annoyed at how past hope the crew seemed to think they were.
''They're randomly generated. Reckon I know most of them. Sorry. Riley Vashti,'' Riley spoke waving his hand as he introduced himself to them. That was two names to put to at least two of the faces.
''Then what're you waiting for, Riley Vashti? Get on it,'' The Doctor exclaimed a grin coming to his face, finally someone had an idea of how to help.
''Well, it's not a single person job. One, a technish for the questions, and others are needed to carry this. The oldest and cheapest security system around, eh, Captain?'' Reilly explained holding up what looked like a rather bulky computer system.
''Reliable and simple, just like you, eh, Riley?'' The captain replied.
''Try and be helpful, get abuse. Nice,'' Riley resorted as he put a backpack carrying other equipment onto his back.
''Tell me about it,'' Jones spoke up moving towards Riley, ''I'll help,'' He added picking up another bag of equipment. Riley nodded in thanks.
''I'll help you too. Make myself useful,'' Martha volunteered earning another thankful nod from Riley.
''It's remotely controlled by the computer panel. That's why it needs at least two, so we have more than enough now,'' Riley commented as he went to lead the way out.
''Oi. Be careful,'' The Doctor shouted after Martha.
''You too, both of you,'' Martha shot back pointing at both the Time Lords.
''Don't worry I'll make sure he don't do anything stupid, Violet replied with a grin.
''Yeah, but promise you'll be ok,'' Jones spoke up moving to give Violet a hig before he left.
''Yes I'll be fine, now go do something useful,'' She spoke spinning him around and pushing him after Martha and Reilly
Violet the Doctor and McDonnell all walked into what appeared to be a medical bay to see a man and woman trying to force another man down onto the table.
''Korwin! What's happened? Is he okay?'' The captain asked running over to see what had her crewmember in such distress.
''Help me! It's burning me!'' Violet frowned, there was nothing touching him and as far as she could tell, there was no sign of injury on him.
''How long's he been like this?'' The Doctor asked.
''Also what in the world is wrong with him?'' Violet added.
''Ashton just brought him in,'' The young woman spoke as she tried to keep the wriggling Korwin flat down on the table.
''What are you doing?'' The captain exclaimed as the Doctor scanned over Korwin with his sonic screwdriver. She made a move to stand in front of him, but the Doctor stopped her immediately.
''Don't get too close,'' He warned, causing her to just frown at him.
''Don't be so stupid. That's my husband,'' She exclaimed.
''And he's just sabotaged our ship,'' The man, Ashton pointed out.
''What?'' She questioned looking between each person in the room. She didn't believe what her crewmember had just said to her.
''He went mad. He put the ship onto secure closure, then he set the heat pulse to melt the controls,'' Ashton explained.
''Deliberate sabotage, he know exactly what he was doing,'' Violet mumbled to her father and he nodded, trying himself to pieced together what he knew.
''No way. He wouldn't do that,'' McDonnell was in complete denial, unable to comprehend what her husband had supposedly done.
''I saw it happen, Captain,'' Ashton remarked, as he moved to allow the Doctor to come closer to Korwin, who had finally stopped wriggling around.
''Korwin? Korwin, open your eyes for me a second,'' The Doctor spoke softly as he tried to get Korwin to open his eyes.
''I can't!'' Korwin cried out, he sounded in pain.
''Korwin,'' Violet started, bending down to get closer to him, ''You can, all you need to do is open them a little bit, only slightly. Please, all we want to do is help you.''
''Don't make me look at you, please,'' Violet signed and looked over at the Doctor, who had picked up a gun shaped object from off of the silver tray that sat on the table beside him.
''All right, all right, all right. Just relax,'' The Doctor spoke, calming Korwin down and making sure he was laid straight on the bed, ''Sedative,'' He then turned asking the woman, Abi as he held the gun shaped object in his hand.
''Yes,'' She replied with a nod of her head.
''What's wrong with him?'' The Captain asked, once the Doctor had knocked her husband out.
''Rising body temperature, unusual energy readings. Stasis chamber. I do love a good stasis chamber. Keep him sedated in there. Regulate the body temperature. And, just for fun, run a bioscan and tissue profile on a metabolic detail,'' Violet rose an eyebrow as his tone went from informative to somewhat existed.
''Just doing them now,'' Abi replied as she begun tapping various keys and symbols on the monitor near the chamber.
''Oh, you're good. Anyone else presenting these symptoms?'' The Doctor asked and Violet smiled slightly.
''Not so far,'' She informed him.
''Well, that's something,'' The Doctor muttered.
''Possibly rules out the option of it being an illness or disease that is infectious,'' Violet added as she glanced down at the motionless man. For a split second, however, she thought she saw him move, but after staring at him intently for a few more minutes, she dismissed it.
''Will someone tell me what is the matter with him?'' McDonnell obviously was very distressed with the situation. Violet found her worry rational, given that he was her husband and she was the Captain of the ship.
''Some sort of infection. We'll know more after the test results. Now, allons-y, back downstairs. Hey. See about those engines. Go. Hey. Go,'' She turned to leave after the Doctors order, but not before glancing wearily between the Time Lord and Lady. However, eventually, she followed Ashton out of the room.
''Call us if there's news. Any questions?'' The Doctor asked and Violet and he prepared to leave.
''Yeah. Who are you?'' Abi asked.
''I'm the Doctor and this is my daughter Violet,'' Violet gave a small way before they both made to leave. This time, however, she didn't see Korwin's hands begin to twitch.
---
Violet, the Doctor, Ashton and McDonnell hadn't been working long on the generator, when the Doctor decided to call and check up on Abi about Korwin's situation.
''Abi, how's Korwin doing? Any results from the bio-scan?'' He asked her over the radio system.
''He's under heavy sedation. I'm just trying to make sense of this data. Give me a couple of minutes and I'll let you know,'' She replied.
''Do you want any help, because I could come up if you want,'' Violet offered.
''No I think its best you stay and fix the engines, but thanks for the offer,'' With that comment the lines switched over so that they could talk to Martha, Jones and Riley.
(Korwin starts to wake up.)
''Martha, Jones, Riley? How're you doing?'' The Doctor asked.
''Area twenty nine, at the door to twenty eight,'' Martha responded, sounding to Violet, a little out of breath.
''Yeah, you've got to move faster,'' The Doctor stated.
''We're doing our best,'' Martha responded.
''Yeah this equipment isn't exactly light weight Doctor,'' Jones pointed out.
''Jones we are on a crash course heading for the sun remember, so quit whining about stuff being heavy,'' Violet shot back, hearing a distinctive huff from the solider on the other end.
''Find the next number in the sequence three, one, three, three, three, one, three, six ,seven,'' Violet frowned at the question that Riley had just resisted to them.
''What?'' Riley questioned once he's read it out.
''You said the crew knew all the answers,'' Martha commented.
''The crew's changed since we set the questions,'' Jones groaned at the answer as he continued to glare at the screen, trying to figure out the number.
MARTHA: You're joking.
''Three, seven, nine,'' The Doctor spoke after a few seconds of silence.
''What?'' Martha asked confused at how he got the answer.
''It's a sequence of...'' But Jones cut off his explanation.
''Happy primes. Three seven nine,'' Jones repeated the numbers, the realisation suddenly hitting him as he glanced back at the screen. The Doctor was right.
''Happy what?'' Martha question, confused at what the men were on about.
''Just enter it, crash course to the sun remember,'' Violet spoke up, huffing as she tightened another screw on the side of the engine.
''Are you sure? We only get one chance,'' Riley stated. This time it was Violets turn to huff, she hated all the questions.
''Any number that reduces to one when you take the sum of the square of its digits and you continue iterating until it yields one is a happy number,'' The Doctor started the explain and Jones continued when he trailed off.
''Any number that doesn't, isn't. A happy prime is a number that is both happy and prime,'' Jones finished.
''Exactly now type it in! I don't know, talk about dumbing down! Don't they teach recreational mathematics anymore?'' The Doctor shouted out.
''Hey I knew,'' Jones defended.
''Yes, but I'm guessing you read it in one of your books,'' The doctor said.
''Actually I got taught that,'' Jones shot back and Violet rolled her eyes.
''Yes, by me. Now Martha are you through?'' Violet asked taking the radio from her father.
''We're through!'' Martha replied cheering.
''Keep moving, fast as you can and, Martha, be careful. There may be something else on board this ship,'' The Doctor spoke.
''Yeah you too Jones,'' Violet added.
''Maybe I should be telling you to go careful,'' Jones replied.
''I'll be fine,'' Violet reassured him before giving the radio back to the Doctor again.
''Any time you want to unnerve us, feel free,'' Martha added.
''Will do, thanks,'' The Doctor replied with a grin.
---
''We need a backup in case they don't reach the auxiliary engines in time. Come on, think. Resources. What have we got?'' The Doctor asked glancing around at all the crew members him hopes of an answer. However, instead he got Martha.
''Doctor?'' She asked.
''What is it now?'' He asked a little agitated as he was trying to do something just as important.
''Who had the most number ones, Elvis or the Beatles. That's pre-download,'' Violet frowned, that was not the question she was expecting.
''Elvis. No! The Beatles! No! Wait! Er, er. Oh, what was that remix? Er, I don't know. I am a bit busy,'' The Doctor rambled.
''Fine. I'll ask someone else,'' Violet heard Martha huff and leave the line.
Now, where was I? Here comes the sun. No, resources. So, the power's still working, the generator's going. If we can harness that. Ah!'' The Doctor suddenly exclaimed causing Violet to jump.
''Oh yes that might work,'' Violet added, once she'd latched onto his thinking and recovered from the fright of his sudden burst of energy.
''Use the generator to jump-start the ship,'' The captain then spoke, latching onto the plan too.
''Exactly. At the very least, it'll buy us some more time,'' The Doctor replied nodding.
''That is brilliant,'' she smiled, taking in a sharp breath, the heat was starting to increase.
''I know. See? Tiny glimmer of hope,'' The Doctor smiled.
''If it works,'' The engineer in the room piped up.
''Not very optimistic are you,'' Violet commented, keeping a wary eye on the man.
''Oh, believe me. You're going to make it work,'' The Captain pointed out.
''That told him,'' The Doctor muttered and Violet grinned.
''Doctor, these readings are starting to scare me,'' The sudden sound of Abi's voice caused the Doctor rush back over to the radio.
''What do you mean?'' He asked.
Well, Korwin's body's changing. His whole biological make-up. It's impossible,'' Her voice trailed off and there was silence until, ''This is Med-centre. Urgent assistance requested. Urgent assistance!''
Violets eyes widened at the worry in her voice. It then hit her that she shouldn't have dismissed that fact that Korwin was moving because it seems, he may have still been awake.
''Stay here! Keep working!'' The Doctor at pointed to the engineer, before then grabbing violet and running out of the room. Violet trailed slightly behind him, with McDonnell a little further behind her.
There was silence, apart from the thud of metal plates as the three now four as Scannell, the engineer had followed them. Well there was silence until Violet heard a haunting voice over the radio that made her shiver.
''Burn with me.''
''Captain?'' The Voice made them all stop, all apart from Violet who carried on. She carried on until she reached the medical bay and heard a scream from the inside.
''Abi!'' She shouted, as she run to the door, but was knocked back by a force that caused her to hit the far wall.
The last thing she remembered was the clang of metal and a pair of feet walking away.
---
Violet was still sprawled out along the deck when the Doctor, McDonnell and Scannell finally reached the medical centre. The Doctor noticed her form first, so while the other two entered the room, he bent down to feel for her pulse. He heaved a sigh of relief when it came apparent that she was ok, just knocked out.
''Violet,'' He whispered, taking his hand and shaking her shoulder gently.
He breathed out a breath he didn't know he was holding, when she moved, groaning slightly as she opened her eyes. She slowly blinked, before then sitting up straight gasping.
''What happened? What happend to Abi,'' She went to stand up, but the Doctor took her shoulder, pushing her back down.
''I'll find out. Just stay here for a bit ok,'' She nodded and followed her father's form as he got up and walked into the medical bay.
''Tell me that's not her,'' Violet tuned her ears, so she could hear the muffled conversation going on between the three in the room.
''Endothermic vaporisation. I've never seen one this ferocious. Burn with me,'' Violet closed her eyes slowly, she hadn't made it to her in time and as a result she was a pile of ash.
''That's what we heard Korwin say,'' Korwin, it was then Violet realised the figure she'd and footsteps she'd heard, must have been his. He had been the one, who had flung open the door, knocking her unconscious in the process.
''What? Do you think? No way. Scannell, tell him. Korwin is not a killer. He can't vaporise people. He's human!'' Violet heard the Captain shout.
''He's changing, something's inside him,'' Violet mumbled to herself as she put her hands on the walls to push herself up into a standing position.
''His bioscan results. Internal temperature, one hundred degrees! Body oxygen replaced by hydrogen. Your husband hasn't been infected, he's been overwhelmed,'' As the Doctor spoke, his daughter slowly edged around the corner and lent on the door frame, so she was now fully in earshot of the conversation.
''The test results are wrong,'' McDonnell defended.
''The evidence proves something else entirely,'' Violet pointed out, as she inspected the Abi's imprint for the first time.
''But what is it, though? A parasite? A mutagenic virus? Something that needs a host body, but how did it get inside him?'' The Doctor pondered.
''Please, don't tell me it's the devil again,'' Violet muttered.
''Devil?'' Scannell questioned.
''Long story, trust me you don't want to hear it,'' Violet replied, before then adding, ''But still something got to him and there isn't a reason to suggest it may not get anyone of us.''
''Stop talking like he's some kind of experiment.''
''Where's the ship been? Have you made planet-fall recently? Docked with any other vessels? Any kind of external contact at all?'' The Doctor dismissed McDonnell's comment and decided to get some facts, that could help him figure out what had got inside Korwin.
''What is this, an interrogation?'' She snapped back, clearly not impressed.
''We've got to stop him before he kills again,'' The Doctor stated.
''Or before he infects someone else,'' Violet added.
''We're just a cargo ship,'' She mumbled, but due to her tone, Violet found it very difficult to believe her.
''Doctor, if you give her a minute,'' Scannell spoke, coming to aid his captain.
''I'm fine. I need to warn the crew,'' She then moved towards the main radio and spoke to everyone on the ship, ''Everybody, listen to me. Something has infected Korwin. We think he killed Abi Lerner. None of you must go anywhere near him, is that clear?''
''Is the infection permanent? Can you cure him?'' She then asked turning towards the Doctor. It seems she had seen that her husband was in fact not being his usual self.
''I don't know,'' He replied shaking his head slightly.
''Don't lie to me, Doctor. Eleven years we've been married. We chose this ship together. He keeps me honest, so I don't want false hope.''
''The parasite's too aggressive. Your husband's gone. There's no way back. I'm sorry,'' The spoke truthfully, bowing his head in acknowledgment of how horrible to her the news must have been.
''Thank you,'' She replied nodding her head sincerely.
''Are you certain nothing happened to provoke this? Nobody's working on anything secret? Because it's vital that you tell me,'' The doctor explained, making himself very clear.
''I know every inch of this ship. I know every detail of my crew's lives. There is nothing,'' The Captain replied, but Violet still felt that something wasn't right.
''Then why is this thing so interested in you?'' He pondered.
''I wish I knew,'' She replied shrugging her shoulders, he hands on her hips
''Doctor, we're through to area seventeen,'' The Doctor leaped towards the radio upon hearing Martha's voice come through.
''Keep going. You've got to get to area one and reboot those engines,'' With that the radio crackled and Martha was gone again.
---
Violet a little concussed, managed on wobbly legs to follow the three out of the medical bay and back down to the engine room.
''Doctor! We're stuck in an escape pod off the area seventeen airlock. One of the crew's trying to jettison us! You've got to help us! Tell me you can stop it,'' Violet's eyes widened at the panic in Martha's voice and immediately worried about Jones.
''Why is this happening?'' The captain ground out, she was frustrated.
''Stay here. I mean it this time! Jump start those engines!'' The Doctor turned to leave.
''Wait, I'm staying here,'' Violet spoke, causing her father to turn and look at her.
''Your still recovering, you took a pretty big hit. You'll be fine, I'll be fine,'' With those final words he left.
''It's picking us off, one by one,'' Violet turns, to see the burn mark on the side of the metal wall.
''What did you do,'' Violet muttered under her breath, so neither of them could hear her.
''It's coming, they weep for you and the beat of the drum is growing louder and louder. Can you hear it? Can you here them?'' Violet stumbled back, looking over to the others, but they hadn't noticed. The girl stood in front of her, closer than she had ever been.
''Who are you?'' Violet whispered to the girl.
The girl just shook her head and put her fingers to her lips, before whispering, ''Listen.''
The same harsh rhythm that Violet had heard in New York filled her head once more, this time louder, causing her to cry out.
''Violet,'' It was Jones she could hear shouting on the radio, but she didn't have the strength to fight back. The noise inside her head was deafening.
''Someone's hacked into the systems. I can't reroute the generators. There's no way I'm going to be able to jump-start this ship! Who the hell did that!'' Scannell shouted himself, not really paying attention to the screaming Time Lady a few feet away.
''Jones, I'm fine, just the pain from being knocked out got to me. I'm fine, I promise,'' When Violet had finally recovered and the drumming had faded out, she immediately got on the radio to Jones.
''Your, explaining everything to me, once this is over. I don't believe for one second what you just told me,'' Jones's voice was harsh and Violet knew there was no escaping the truth.
''Ok, I will. Just focus on coming back. Ok,'' She replied.
''Ok,'' The radio then crackled and disconnected.
''Korwin? What are you? Why are you killing my crew? What did you do to him? What have you done to my husband?'' Violets turned to see McDonnell and standing before her, was Korwin.
''You recognise me. Korwin, you know me. It's Kath. Your wife,'' Korwin had stopped and started intently at her.
''My wife,'' He spoke, his voice echoed around due to the metal bucket on his head.
''That's right. You're still in there. I'm your wife.'' There was silence between the two, until Korwin tilted his head.
''It's your fault.''
Violet froze in horror as Korwin moved forward once more, causing his wife to move further backwards. However, Violet wasn't frozen for long, as she caught a glimpse of pipes running along the roof of the ship.
''Scannell, have you got ice vents?'' Violet asked, as she watched McDonnell walk backwards more and more, while Korwin begun to move his hand to his visor.
''Yeah, why,'' He questioned, but then after a moment he realised what she was getting at, ''Are you sure?'' he then asked.
''It's the only way,'' As she spoke, she reached inside the jacked she was wearing and pulled out the square gun. She never, ever went anywhere without.
''It's your fault. Now burn with me!'' The moment Violet heard him speak she aimed and fired, cracking the pipe above him.
That was the signal Scannell needed to start turning the valve which made sure the ice rained down right on top of Korwin, hopefully freezing him.
''What are you doing?'' She screamed, as she watched her husband wither in pain from the cold.
''Freezing him. Ice vents,'' Scannell replied, shrugging his shoulders.
''You'll kill him!'' She shouted.
''That's the whole point. I'm sorry, he was already dead, the Doctor told you that,'' Violet said, as Korwin collapsed to the ground, the clang of his metal helmet echoing through the whole of engineering.
''McDonnell, Violet. Ashton's heading in your direction. He's been infected, just like Korwin!'' Violet cringed as she realised that Ashton was going to be the same as Korwin and had a feeling the same trick she used before wasn't going to work again.
''Korwin's dead, Doctor,'' Scannell replied over the radio.
As Scannell listened to the Doctors reply, Violet walked over to where McDonnell sat kneeling by her husband.
''What did you do?'' Violet's tone wasn't a friendly, ''Don't touch him, we still don't know how it spreads,'' Violet warned, grabbing her hands and moving the woman away from the body.
''You murdered him!'' She shouted.
''That man wasn't Korwin. He hadn't been Korwin since he was brought to the medical bay,'' Violet glared at McDonnell, trying to make her see sense.
''He was about to kill you,'' Scannell added, he had now joined them, an equally unimpressed look on his face.
''He recognised me.''
''You heard the Doctor and Violet. It isn't Korwin anymore,'' Violet nodded at the man's words.
''Whatever was inside him, may have known who you were,'' Violet stated, as she begun to pace. She hated not having the Doctor around to help figure out what to do.
''You and the Doctor know that. None of us knows!'' She screamed and Violet flinched at the raised voice.
''So what are you going to do, sit there until we burn? Because without you none of us stand a chance of getting out of here,'' Scannell spoke, causing her to look up at him.
''Scannell! I need a spacesuit in area seventeen now! Violet, help McDonnell with Ashton, once he gets to you,'' The Doctors voice seemed frantic as he called over the radio.
''What for?''
''Just get down here!'' The Doctor called.
''Well, go on. Do what he says,'' McDonnell reluctantly ground out, as she glanced back down at her husband's motionless body.
''Ashton's still out there,'' He commented, glancing towards Violet as well.
''We'll deal with him,'' Violet replied and McDonnell nodded.
---
''He's coming. You ready,'' Violet asked McDonnell, as Ashton came into view.
The plan was to lead him upstairs to the medical centre and hopefully get him into the stasis chamber, to freeze him, similar to the way they had managed to kill Korwin.
''Ashton,'' Violet called, ''Lets burn together.'' The shout seems to work as Ashton locked onto Violet and begun climbing the stairs, following her as she ran.
''Ready,'' Violet whispered as Ashton came closer and closer. McDonnell just nodded in reply.
The moment Ashton entered the medical bay, Violet and McDonnell launched themselves towards him. They managed to punch and drag him towards the stasis chamber. With their combined strength they managed to keep him inside long enough for one of them to press the button and freeze him, until his head dropped and his body went limp.
Breathing heavily both women stood up straight. For the first time that day they shared a smirk. Violet, however, despite their teamwork was still weary of the woman, as she was sure she was hiding something.
''Come on, area seventeen, let's have a look at what's going on,'' Violet suggested and the Captain nodded, following the Time Lady out of the room.
---
When Violet and McDonnell finally reach area seventeen, what to Violet looks like an escape pod opened to reveal a rather relived looked Jones.
''Oh my good what happened to you?'' Violet exclaimed as she moved to hug her friend.
''Just a little mishap with Ashton and him wanting us to burn with him,'' Violet looked at him in shock as his voice shook a little.
''And you told me to be careful,'' She protested, punching him lightly on the shoulder as they pulled away from their embrace.
''And yet it seems you weren't either,'' He remarked, moving to touch the side of her head, where a distinct lump had formed, ''also you have some explaining to do, because that screaming, nearly made me go deaf.''
''Now you're overacting, Scannell wasn't even bothered,'' Violet remarked, turning to gesture towards the engineer, but he was gone. Instead she gasped at the sight of the bright white light emitting from her father's eyes.
''You mined the sun. Stripped its surface for cheap fuel. You should have scanned for life!'' Violet's eyes widened, that was why the being had been after McDonnell, it had been taken from its home. She had taken from a living organism, the sun was alive.
''I don't understand,'' McDonnell whispered, she was desperate for answers. Answers to why her husband had died and why everything had been her fault.
''Doctor, what are you talking about?'' Martha asked.
''The sun's alive Martha. It breaths, a living organism,'' Jones explained as he knelt down to inspect the Doctor closer.
''You scooped out its heart, used it for fuel, and now it's screaming!'' The Doctor cried.
''What do you mean? How can a sun be alive? Why is he saying that?'' The Captain stuttered out.
''Because it's living in me.''
''Oh, my God,'' McDonnell gasped out and Violet moved to get Martha away from her father.
''Humans! You grab whatever's nearest and bleed it dry! You should have scanned!'' The Doctor screamed, glaring hauntingly at McDonnell.
''It takes too long. We'd be caught. Fusion scoops are illegal,'' Violet shook her head, that wasn't an excuse, scanning should have been the first thing they should have done.
''You've got to freeze me, quickly,'' The Doctor suddenly piped up.
''What?'' Martha questioned unsure what to do.
''We need to get him to the stasis chamber, it's how we managed to stop Ashton,'' Violet explained, as she moved to grab one of the Doctors arms, so he could be hoisted up.
''Violet's right you've got to freeze it out of me! It'll use me to kill you if you don't. The closer we get to the sun, the stronger it gets! Med-centre, quickly! Quickly!'' The Doctor ordered.
---
The Four of them had managed to transport the Time Lord safely to the medical centre and lay him safely in the stasis chamber, once Ashton had been removed of course.
''Martha, where are you?'' As Martha and the Doctor spoke, Violet started typing and flipping switched to find the right combination, which would allow the Doctor to be frozen, but also survive too.
''No, you don't know how this equipment works. You'll kill him. Nobody can survive those temperatures,'' McDonnell exclaimed as she watched how low Violet was setting the chambers temperature to.
''He's not human. If he says he can survive, then he can,'' Martha snapped back, her tone even causing Jones to reel back.
''I also know this equipment very well, so I don't need your help,'' Violet added as she continued to change the settings on the chamber.
''You've done enough damage,'' Martha finally added, as she tried to keep the Doctor still in the chamber.
''Ten seconds. That's all I'll be able to take. No more. Martha!'' The Doctor screams out as he continues to wither in pain
''Yeah?'' Martha spoke softly as Jones and Violet desperately tried to get the settings on the chamber right.
''It's burning me up. I can't control it. If you don't get rid of it, I could kill you. I could kill you all. I'm scared! I'm so scared!''
''Just stay calm. You saved me, now I return the favour. Just believe in me,'' Martha whispered, trying as hard as she could to keep him warm.
''It's burning through me. Then what'll happen?'' The Doctor cried desperately.
''That's enough! we've got you,'' Martha snapped at him as she watched Violet begin to press buttons on the monitor.
''There's this process, this thing that happens if I'm about to die,'' He started, but Jones cut him off.
''Your not going to die. You'll be ok,''
''Are you ready?'' Violet asked as she had finished calibrating the chamber.
''No,'' The Doctor replied, but Martha just nodded.
Carefully all three of them push the Doctor right into the chamber and once Violet typed in the correct unit, cold air came rushing down onto him. He screams in agony as the cold begins to freeze him. However, the screaming stopped and Violet frowned in confusion, the chamber hadn't been on for long enough.
''No!, you can't stop it. Not yet,'' The Doctor whimpers as the frost on his face begins to melt away at an alarming rate.
''What happened?'' Martha asked.
''Power's been cut in Engineering,'' McDonnell replied.
''But who's down there?'' Martha asked, glancing over at the other two, who shook their heads, not knowing either.
''Leave it to me,'' She commands and runs out of the room.
''Come on. You're defrosting,'' Martha breaks the silence in the room, by heaving the Doctor up into a sitting position.
''All of you, listen! I've only got a moment. You've got to go!'' The Doctor orders, but not one of them moves.
''No way,'' Martha exclaimed, standing her ground.
''Get to the front. Vent the engines. Sun particles in the fuel, get rid of them,'' The Doctor explained and Violet nodded, grabbing Jones to go and do what he said.
''I am not leaving you. We can't leave him,'' Martha spoke noticing Jones and Violet turning to go,
''You've got to give back what they took...'' He was cut off by her again.
''Doctor!'' Martha shouted as she noticed him becoming weaker and weaker as he spoke.
''Please go!'' He pleaded.
''I'll be back for you,'' Martha whispered, before finally moving to followed Jones and Violet.
The three ran as fast as they could to get down to the engine room in time to empty out the fuel. They were close until the Doctors voice rung out through the radio.
''Martha!'' He wheezed.
''Doctor! What are you doing?'' Martha questioned as the group continued to run.
''I can't fight it. Give it back or burn with me,'' Violets blood ran cold as he continued to talk, ''burn with me, Martha.''
''We need to hurry up, come on,'' Violet broke the silence and they continued on their way.
The moment the group found Riley and Scannell they all shouted the same thing, although each of them out of breath.
''Vent the engines. Dump the fuel.''
''What?'' Scannell replied looking at them as if they had grown two heads each.
''Sun particles in the fuel. You need to get rid of them or we're all going to be the ones being rid of,'' Jones ordered and the two men moved back to one of the monitors to get the fuel out.
There was silence as the lights went out, which was followed by the ship lurched forward. Violet had, had her eyes closed and the moment she opened them she looked out the window to see they were moving, moving away from the sun.
''Impact averted. Impact averted. Impact averted,'' The computer system repeated and Jones let out a sigh of relief, along with the remainder of the crew.
''We're clear. We've got just enough reserves,'' Riley exclaimed.
''Doctor!'' Martha suddenly shouted, rushing out of the room. She wasn't alone as the solider and Time lady raced after her.
---
''This is never your ship,'' Scannell commented as he looked the Tardis up and down.
''Compact, eh? And another good word, robust. Barely a scorch mark on her,'' The Doctor explained as he tapped the side of the Tardis.
''We can't just leave you drifting with no fuel,'' Martha stated talking to Riley.
''We've sent out an official mayday. The authorities' will pick us up soon enough,'' He replied.
''Though how do we explain what happened?'' Scannell asked.
''Just tell them. That sun needs care and protection just like any other living thing,'' The Doctor finished before turning to go inside the Tardis.
''Violet,'' She was about to follow her father in when the voice made her stop.
''Thank you, if it wasn't for you Korwin would have probably turned me into the same thing he and Ashton were,'' Scannell spoke wringing his hands together, looking as if he didn;t tend to thank people that often.
''Your welcome. Oh and if you ever want another job,go La armeo de la Universo. I'll put in agood word, I promise,'' She smiled at his stunned expression when she left him, closing the door tightly behind her.
