Chapter 9. Rules are rules.
Tris's POV.
After we leave from talking to Matthew I ask look at Tobias.
" Can we do something fun today?" I ask.
He looks at me. " What do you suggest?"
" Let's go on a ride in the trains."
" You sure your healthy enough to be jumping on and off trains Tris?"
I glare at him. " I don't care about the risks Tobias. I am a Dauntless after all."
" True, very well. Let's go." Says Tobias agreeing with me.
He leads me out of the Dauntless compound, towards the train tracks. He checks his watch. " The train should be here any minute so get ready." Says Tobias.
I smile at him and brace myself for when it comes.
Soon enough though we hear the faint sound or the train before we even see it.
Tobias smiles at me just as the train gets to us and together we start running after it.
He's ahead of me, but that's so he can open the door and help me in. I told him I was fine and could do it on my own, but he insisted he help me so I didn't argue.
He grabs the handle on the side and manages to place a foot on a step before leaning over and pressing the button that opened the door. He then turned around towards me and held out his hand.
I grin and push myself to run faster. The wind on my face is amazing. I haven't ran in three years and I can't believe how much I missed it.
I take his hand and allow him to pull me into the train. We then sit together close to the door watching as things fly by.
The wind freeing loose strand of my hair free from my pony tail and whipping them around in the wind.
I lean over and lay my head against Tobias's shoulder. " I've missed this." I say.
He puts his arm around me and pulled my closer. " I've missed this too." He says.
After a while we stand up and get ready to jump. Tobias let's me go first. He told me when to jump, and I did.
I took off and leapt off the train car, I felt as if I was flying, well more like suspended in the air for a bit before my feet came in contact with the ground and I stumbled a couple feet before I regained all of my balance and looked just in time to see Tobias's feet him the ground and him stumble as well. Then he walked over to me and took my hand.
Then together we start walking. We decided to go the the park where we played capture the flag during initiation.
I could see the ferris wheel Tobias and I had climbed to get a better view of the other team, it's also the place where I learned what Tobias's first fear was, and nearly died on the way down.
I miss those days a little bit, being able to have fun and be nice, the days where we would work together and look after each other, and that included the Factionless.
I know I sounded like a Abnegation just then. I was from that Faction to begin with. So what?
Now everything is different. We soon made it to the Farris wheel and I looked up and smiled at him. " So you want to climb it again Four?" I say teasingly.
He shakes his head and laughs, but I didn't miss the small trace of sudden panic that appeared in his eyes at my words. " No I don't think that would be a good idea. No ones done anything with this since we climbed it during initiation. It's not safe." He says.
" No one had done anything with it for a few years before we climbed it and it was safe until that one rung broke under the weight of my foot." I reply.
" Still, not in the state your in, you just woke up." He said.
" First of all Tobias. I'm not glass I think I can handle climbing, and second I can't believe the mighty instructor Four Is still scared of heights after all these years." I say.
He sighs. I laugh and we go hang out around the place for a while before we decide to go back.
On the way back though we passed a small family. A man and woman with three very skinny kids looking at us. " Please, we need help. Please?" Begged the man.
I started walking over to help, the Abnegation in me wanted to do nothing more then help. Tobias took my arm and lead me away from them though. I looked back at them with sad eyes before turning back to Tobias.
When we were by the tracks again I roughly yanked my arm out of his grip and glared at him. " Why the heck couldn't we help them?!" I almost shout.
" Because, all Factions keep to themselves and aren't aloud to help others such as the Factionless." He says.
" And your ok with leaving those people there to die?!" I growl balling my hands into fists. He notices that and takes a step back.
" No no, I've never been ok with it. I want to help them badly. I really do. It's just I was outnumbered by the other Faction leaders as to if we're going to help them or anyone else of not. I had no choice Tris. Rules are rules." He says.
The train then passes and I turn and run after it without even replying to him. He runs after me. I jump and climb into the train and a few seconds later so does he.
Rules are rules. HA!
We sit down, but I don't speak to him at all. After a while he speaks. " Please speak to me Tris. " says Tobias.
" Did you argue about that at all and try to fight for them or did you surrender and be a coward.?" I ask rudely.
" Oh I argued, but that didn't matter to them. As leader of Dauntless I have to follow these rules. If I break anyone of them then we will be banished from the Faction if caught. I can't let anyone else take over Dauntless. No one knows how to run it like I do." He says.
I nod. " Fine."
" So your not angry at me anymore?" He asks.
I nod. Then hear him sigh in relief. He pulls me towards him and wraps his arm around my waist as I lean my head on his shoulders again.
I'm going to help these people, and he's going to help me no matter if he likes it or not, and I promise one thing. We will not get caught.
