Chapter Four

It was toasty warm inside the diner, Alexia shed two sweaters immediately. As she looked around the small diner she took in the cracked walls, the out dated countertops, and the poorly patched booths. It wasn't exactly inviting, but the place smelled of cooking sausages and potatoes; she was starving.

From across the diner Alexia could hear a waitress dealing with a group of drunk teenage boys. They were probably about the same age as her, maybe a little bit older. From the disgusted look on the waitress's face Alexia knew these boys were getting on her last nerve.

With an irritated expression written all over her face, the waitress stalks away from the boys while shaking her head. When she looks up she spots the new arrivals and freezes. At first Alexia thought this girl was worried she was going to have to deal with another group of drunk teens but then she realized the waitress was only staring at one of them.

Demetri.

Alexia, Cheri and Ellie all turned their gaze on Demetri. With all the staring eyes on him, Demetri couldn't help but feel incredibly uncomfortable. Although he was dead gorgeous and girls probably looked at him like this all the time. But these were not looks of admiration. There was one look of anger, sadness, and happiness all rolled into one. And then there were three looks of confusion, one of which was cutting into him like a knife.

Filled with curiosity, Alexia turned back to the waitress and took in her appearance. She was pretty, maybe 17 or 18 with blonde hair pulled into a high pony tail. Her blue eyes were the exact same shade as Alexia's, lined with black kohl and had not looked away from Demetri for even a second. The work uniform did little to flatter her figure.

"She looks like you." Ellie whispered into her ear.

"Really, I didn't notice." Alexia replied sarcastically.

Was this girl the reason Demetri didn't want to go to this diner? Alexia tried to stop her imagination from running wild but it was impossible. Who could this girl be?

"I'm sure you loved seeing that." The waitress voice rang high pitched into the air when she snapped out of her trance. She strode forward and Alexia was able to read her name tag, Tara.

"Excuse me?" Cheri questioned, only mildly attempting to keep her voice polite.

"I wasn't talking to you." Tara snapped at Cheri, flitting her gaze away from Demetri for only a second.

Tension filled the room as the three new immortals took offence to Tara's tone. "Don't talk to her like that." Ellie spat through gritted teeth.

"So which one of these children are you playing games with now, Demetri?" Tara's tone was condescending..

"Children?" Alexia finally found her voice. "We are probably the same age as you!"

Tara turned her gaze on Alexia, and eyed her with little interest. "I doubt that."

"What's your problem?" Alexia retorted, feeling the rage build inside of her.

"He is." she gestured to Demetri. Nobody spoke but all eyes turned to Demetri. Alexia tried to maintain her anger but it felt close to boiling over.

"Who is she?" Cheri finally broke the silence, demanding an answer from her boyfriend. Roman however, held up his hands and took a step back as if to say I have nothing to do with this, and pointed to Demetri.

So this girl was the reason Demetri didn't want to come into the Diner, Alexia realized. All the drama was causing Alexia's head to throb painfully. Soon after the headache would come the weakness and she needed to eat before the exhaustion hit.

"Demetri." Alexia demanded, gaining his attention immediately. His green eyes glanced down to hers and it was so easy to read the fear in them. Fear, worry and anxiety. It was the same look he had given her when he thought he was about to lose her forever. "Who is she?"

Demetri shook his head, silently pleading Alexia not to force him to speak the truth. She raised an eyebrow at him in warning. "Don't make me do this Demetri." Deep down, Alexia was praying he wouldn't say anything, then she would have a reason to use her defense on him. If she used her powers the headache would go away and the exhaustion wouldn't come.

In a last ditch effort, Demetri tore his eyes from Alexia but she quickly clasped his face between her hands and caught his gaze. It took a fraction of a second to gain control over him and her body flooded with adrenaline. "Tell me how you know her?" she asked and the remains of her throbbing headache vanished with her words. The confidence that always came with taking control of another immortal flooded through her and for the slightest moment she didn't even care who Tara was or what connection she had with Demetri.

"She my ex-girlfriend." Demetri's voice trembled even in it's hypnotic state and his words rocked Alexia like a ton of bricks. How stupid she had been.

Tara gave a sarcastic laugh behind them, "You know, you actually have to break up with somebody to make them your "ex" but I guess taking off and not talking to me for three and a half weeks was the best way to do it." Cheri allowed her eyes to darken at the edges and prepared to lunge herself at the girl but Roman held her back.

"Oh, you've got some feisty girls with you now don't you." Tara laughed sickly sweet, "I would do that if I were you." She warned and her tone teetered on dangerous.

"You couldn't hurt me if you tried your hardest." Cheri spat back as she squared her shoulders confidently. None of the three girls had ever been the type to duke it out. But it didn't really surprise Alexia that Cheri would be the one to initiate a fist fight, she was fiercely loyal and hated seeing her friends hurt.

"You would be surprised." Roman admitted as he wrapped an arm around Cheri's waist and spun her around to drag her out the door. She went out kicking and screaming obscenities. Alexia could hear Cheri still screaming when the door closed but she was too dazed to absorb them. Tara was Demetri's ex girlfriend?

Of course he would have had other girlfriends. Alexia didn't think he would have actually sat around waiting for 17 years at a time doing absolutely nothing and never being with anyone. Never the less, it hurt. He could have at least warned her so she would be prepared walking into this Diner and facing Tara. At least then she wouldn't be standing there with an awstrick look across her face.

"What you think a guy like this hasn't had other girlfriends before?" Tara spat in a condescending tone. She was being spiteful and if she had any idea who Alexia was she might have a little more respect. Alexia couldn't respond, tears burned in the back of her eyes and the last thing she wanted was to cry in front of this cruel girl.

Sensing Alexias emotional roller coaster, Ellie grabbed her by the hand and pulled her towards the door. Demetri reached out, wrapping his hand around Alexia's arm causing her to look up into his eyes. She had never seen him look so sad and desperate before. Part of her wanted to hug him and tell him it was okay to extinguish that look from his face. But a larger part, a much angrier part of her wanted to run away from the Diner and never look back.

"Let her go." Ellie warned fiercely as she allowed her eyes to darken at the edges. Demetri paid her no attention, his eyes never left Alexias. He hoped she would see the message behind his gaze, This girl never meant anything to me, I have always loved you."

"Let me go Demetri," Alexia spoke softly but firmly, "and don't follow us."
