Chapter 58

It was one thing to tell Jamie that she could help with the interrogations. Yet, when Silv thought about it for a bit, she had no idea which information would be valuable. After all, she had never interrogated anyone. Although she was a soldier, she was more of a ground fighter than a strategist or interrogator.

"What do you need to know about him to get him to talk?" Silv asked Jamie.

It made sense that being one of the rebels, Jamie would be far better informed about the interrogation techniques and how to implement them.

"We need to know what makes him tick, what are his weaknesses. That way, grandpa can prey on those faults and get him to reveal something without him even realizing what he was doing," Jamie says.

He seemed to be in a much better mood than when Silv first reached him, and she hoped it was because he realized that no matter what she did in the past, she could help them get some information from Denis.

"Well, from what he told me when he betrayed me, he is jealous of those who had better living conditions. He believes that people like me had it easy in life while he had to struggle for every little thing," Silv said.

"Isn't that true, though?" Jamie asked.

Though he seems genuinely curious, Silv found the question offensive. In her mind, she was never spoiled. Silv worked for everything that she had and truly believed that she deserved the perfectly average life she had.

However, contemplating about it after everything that had happened, Silv realized that her grandmother had protected her from many bad things that others had to face. Though she still didn't think she was living in abundance, she could see a sliver of truth in what Denis told her that day.

"I guess it's partially true. The fact is that I didn't realize it at the time, but Denis did, and he resented me for it. I did earn my position in the military fairly. However, grandma did protect me from unsavory members of the military," Silv said.

"I see. What else can you tell me about Denis?" Jamie asked.

"I guess I would have to say that he is too sure of himself, that he is overconfident. When he confronted me, he talked about me acting high and mighty when refusing his advances. Yet, I had a feeling that he believed that I wasn't good enough for him, not the other way around," Silv said.

"Wait a minute, he wanted to date you?" Jamie asked, his eyes suddenly lighting up.

"Well, I guess that's true enough. Still, Denis did explain that he wasn't romantically interested in me, that he was only interested in my position. I guess he believed that he could get higher status by getting involved with me," Silv said.

"Still, it's useful to know," Jamie said.

"How come?" Silv asked, not really understanding the whole interrogation business.

"Because it shows us what he cares about," Jamie said.

"I told you, he doesn't care about me," Silv said.

"I am not talking about you. Trying to get involved with you to get ahead shows Denis would do anything to progress in society. He is ready to sacrifice anyone and anything to accomplish that," Jamie said.

"How does that help us?" Silv asked.

"On its own, not much, but you did mention his pride and overconfidence. I wonder if grandpa might be able to..." Jamie said, trailing off into silence.

"Be able to do what?" Silv asked, annoyed that she was kept out of the loop.

"Thank you, Silv. This may actually prove to be useful," Jamie says, rushing toward Denis's cell.

"Sure, just leave me here to die of curiosity, no worries," Silv mumbled under her breath.

"What shall we do now, Miss Silv?" Arthur asked before Silv could do something imprudent.

"Well, since there doesn't seem to be anything else we can do here, we should go and check on Justin and the others. We can also see what they think about the tunnels in the mountain, where the best place to go might be. Furthermore, they can tell us if the ground is malleable enough to finally give grandma the proper burial," Silv said.

"Miss Silv has said that we would have to ensure it was safe before being able to pay our respects to my mistress," Arthur said, sounding confused.

Silv couldn't help but feel sorry for the AI having in mind how challenging it must have been for him to keep up with the humans and their irrational ways of thinking.

"That's true, but since the matter of safety is left in Joe's hands to figure out. I thought we could check the other issues, and then when we finally find out if it's safe or not, we might be able to hasten the progress by already having a place picked out. Also, preparing the right machinery might be able to hasten the process," Silv said.

"That sounds oddly rational, Miss Silv," Arthur said, surprised.

"Don't sound so surprised, Arthur. We humans can be rational," Silv said.

Noting a look of doubt he was giving her, Silv decided to make a more accurate statement.

"We can be rational from time to time. Besides, if I allow my emotions to overwhelm me now, I'll barge into that cell and break every bone in Denis' treacherous body," Silv said.

"We better teleport to Justin and other humans then," Arthur said.

He was clearly worried that Silv was temperamental enough to do what she said, which would only postpone the final goodbyes to his mistress.

"Evanescence, take us to Justin," Silv said out loud.

"Transport initiated," Evanescence said.

Moments later, they materialized just behind Justin, who was preparing some kind of medicine.

"What?" He exclaimed, startled.

"Ah, Silv. You scared me. Those teleportations should go with an accompanying sound effect or something. It's unnerving when people just pop out of nowhere," Justin said.

"I guess that's a good point, especially having in mind how jumpy we all are lately. I'll talk with Evanesence about it," Silv promised.

"Good. Now, what do I owe the pleasure of your visit to?" Justin asked, continuing with his task.

"We wanted to check-in, see how many losses we suffered, how many injuries..." Silv said.

It wasn't something she actually wanted to know, but she knew that she needed to have in mind all the losses. She needed to respect them and help the ones who were left behind.

"Surprisingly, it's not so bad. We have two dead, a few heavily injured and many with lighter injuries," Justin said.

Though Silv could see that he was trying to lessen the blow, it clearly hurt him to say those words. After all, they were just numbers for Silv. However, for Justin, they were so much more. They were family.

"I am sorry," Silv said, hugging Justin as he turned around to carry the medicine to those who needed it.

"It's okay, it could have been much worse, but it's still difficult to deal with constant loses," Justin said, moving away from Silv to administer the medicine.

"Is there something I can do to help?" Silv asked.

"As a matter of fact, there might be. The ship has been most welcoming and helpful. Still, I think Evanescence doesn't fully understand our needs because of our different anatomies. So, I was wondering if maybe you can convince Wir Eis and Arthur to help out," Justin said.

"Sure. But why both? I mean, I understand why Wir Eis, but why do you need Arthur?" Silv asked.

"I believe that his more rational and analytic approach to things might help us explain to Evanescence what exactly we need," Justin said.

"Sounds reasonable enough to me," Silv said.

She wanted to help in any way possible, even if it was just by handing out orders and pleas.

"Arthur, can you stay here and help Justin in any way you can while I go and get Wir Eis?" Silv asked.

"Yes, Miss Silv, " Arthur said.

It felt wrong to order the AI but Silv hoped that making it sound more like a question made it somehow okay to ask so much of him.

"Get me to Wir Eis," Silv said, squashing the lingering sense of uneasiness at taking advantage of both Arthur and Wir Eis.
