Five
As I toss another piece of croissant into my mouth I curse the blasted baker. How did I become so addicted to human food?!
He must be sorcerer or witch is disguise. That is the only explanation.
Eliora seats beside me with a huge smile. "I didn't know you fancy pastries. You've always been afraid of gaining weight because of..." she leans in and whispers "The Queen.."
I try not to shoot her an irritated look and instead subtly shift further away. "Well, I've realized I can't actually gain any weight no matter what I eat."
Yes. As a Supernatural I've been the given the gifting being slim and fit forever in my true form. I don't appreciate it sometimes, but sometimes like now, it's honestly a blessing.
My face scrunches up when I realize I'm being mushy again...
Audrey's traits must be playing with mine. I'm selfish. I'm not grateful.
Irritated I shoot Eliora a look. "Well? won't you get my bath ready?"
She just nods with that irritating smile and moves to do as I've said.
I sigh and relax into the cushions of my bed. Audrey must've really loved pillows because her bed is filled with them. I'm surprised the king and Queen even let her get more than one. Not that I'm complaining.
Oh, I am.
The scent of cool breeze and a hint of spices drift into the room. Eliora pokes her head out of the bathing area. "Your bath is ready miss."
I set the remaining pastry aside and stand. She's at my side in an instant pulling off my clothes and draping me in the worn bath cloth.
I grab a glass of red wine before slowly sinking into the water.
Another gift is that I can't get drunk. It's great, I know.
Eliora perches on the edge of the bathtub. "So, the prince is coming in two days..... what type of dress are you planning on getting?"
My parents want me to get a brand new dress, yes I am shocked as well. However they actually want me to go all the way to the seamstress!! She isn't coming over to measure me as she is supposed to. The audacity. It might be one of the reasons I'm irritated.
"I'll decide that when I get there. Probably Blue silk that flows down like a river..."
I see Eliora looks away from the corner of my eye. "What?"
She bites her lip. "The King and Queen always gives you a budget and it's never enough to purchase silk....."
I hum. "Okay then. I'm not going. Set out another nightgown. I'm going to see dear mother."
In shock, She falls off the edge of the tub and into the water right on me.
I only have a moment to gasp before My head goes under. Only my fast reflexes prevents me from inhaling the water. The wine glass thankfully falls the other way and onto the floor.
She scrabbles to stand and sends water spraying around and on my face.
"How dare you?!" I push her face away when she falls on me again.
She sputters and tries to stand again. "I'm so so-"
She falls again and bonk's her head on the side of the tub.
The atmosphere is tense as Eliora slowly braids my hair. Her face is still pale form the traumatic bathroom experience and to be honest, so is mine.
"Miss I-"
"Eliora?"
"Yes, Miss?"
"Be quiet."
The Queen is in the drawing room when I find her. Golden blonde locks are now in a side plait over her right shoulder and her dress is one of fine purple silk and cotton. It slides down her legs and if not for her nasty nose, ugly personality and the fact that I hate her I would call her beautiful.
Her brows scrunch in surprise and distaste when I walk in.
I curtesy in my little night dress. "Lovely day mother."
"Well, it was before you showed up in that disgrace of a dress. What are you even wearing?"
I ignore the bite in her words and daintily walk to perch myself onto a plush chaise. "Silk."
"Silk?" She tilts her head confused.
"Yes..." I pick at invisible lint. "These night dresses are the only garments of silk I have and I can't wear anything other than silk. That makes my options limited..."
She huffs. "Why you have lot of dresses!!"
I smile. "They're not silk. Just cheap Carton."
"You've never cared for that before."
"Why then, isn't it about time I did? I mean, the prince would hate to learn that I'm the only one in the royal family who doesn't own a proper wardrobe.." bat these long lashes and cross my legs so that the nightdress rises to a scandalous length.
I see some servants gulp and furiously blink.
The Queen sputters speechless. "what?! You have silk dresses for occasions like this!!"
"What a shame it would be if I told him I only had two...." At her look I widen my eyes. "Oh, but it's not a threat mother, just a suggestion..."
Her hands shake and she clutches them tighter in her lap. "How can you even think of doing such a thing!! You are no child!! And..... I never said it was..."
I clap my hands together. Great. "Good that we understand each other!! I'm planning on going to the seamstress's tomorrow with my maids. Perhaps you can help us tell her that it's only silk I'll be purchasing mother dearest."
When I stand Eliora moves to stand beside me. I'm about to leave when she speaks again.
"We've heard about The young boy you....killed.." Her voice is laced with disbelief.
Keeping my back to her I shrug. "You do not believe it then?"
She scoffs. "You can barely dance on your own two feet. But the common people are so adamant you did...." her tones changes. It has a hint of a smile now. I know she's happy about her new 'leverage'
"I doubt you will even be allowed to see the prince either way. The people will be moved to great anger if they find out you are still allowed to allowed balls and enjoy yourself after killing their child. The money for your dresses will be used as compensation for his family and you will be locked away in your room for two months. This is light compared to what should be done. Normally it's a life for a life." She turns her back to me.
Eliora's mouth is hanging open in disbelief. I'm not sure what she doesn't believe. The fact that I killed someone or the Queen's punishment. Probably the former.
The servants are no longer looking at me. Their eyes show their disbelief and fear by they look elsewhere.
"He threw that fruit at me. I was only returning it. It's no ones fault he didn't catch it with his two hands. I think what you should be worried about is the prince and His parents finding out this happened when I walked barefoot and tattered down the streets with the people jeering at me, and my family uncaring in the big warm palace, not even bothered to look for me....."
When she turns her eyes are flashing in barely contained anger. "We looked for you."
"You can tell that to them then." To Eliora. "Let's be on our way. We do not want to keep the seamstress waiting now do we?"
It is rather amusing that they can bend at the mention of the so called prince. I wonder how powerful he and his parents are....
