Epilogue
One month later
"I can't believe that he did that for me," Christine whispered, staring at the gravestone that had Pete's name on it. "I just can't believe he's gone." I wrapped my arm around her shoulders, hugging her tightly.
"He wanted to save you," I said. "He was a real hero, Christine." She nodded, wiping her eyes with her handkerchief.
"I'm just glad that they gave Lily the medal," she said. "Even if she won't ever know exactly how her granddad died." I smiled sadly. When Christine had first come out of the machine, she was dazed and confused and hardly knew what was going on. But the cavern was starting to collapse and we had to get out. There was no time to explain anything.
Midshipman Goodman and the others had successfully distracted the Ice People long enough for us to kill the Master. All the Ice People had just frozen without their Master to give them orders. Many had just frozen and sunk to the bottom of the sea. Goodman met us with the boat as soon as we all got out and we escaped before the entirety of the Master's lair collapsed.
The beacon died the moment the Master died too. However that didn't stop a large part of the Navy sailing to the Antarctic and finding us a few days later. Captain Jackson explained everything that had happened. As a result, we all had to sign the Official Secrets Act, promising that we would never talk of those days with anyone.
I don't even know where the alien ship is now.
"Are you sure you want to go back to work so soon?" I asked Christine. "You could take another month off just to recover. You went through quite a bit."
"I don't remember any of it, though," she said. "Besides, I need my work to distract me." I nodded, fully understanding what she was saying.
"We better get going then," I said quietly. "They want us to check out an oil tanker wreck off the coast of Costa Rica. We need to start preparing if we're going to figure out what happened." She took a deep breath.
"Thank God we're going somewhere warm this time," she said. "I don't know about you, but I've had enough ice for a lifetime." I chuckled softly.
"Come on," she said. "Let's get out of here." She started walking back to the car but I stayed a little longer, digging my hand into my pocket.
"Look after this, mate," I said softly. "And thank you." I left, following Christine back to the car, leaving my voice recorder resting on Pete's gravestone.
