Chapter 9: A Reunion, and Sorrow

"Z-Zeref-sama?" I say, staring unbelieving at the man in front of me. I took a deep breath, and his scent confirmed my thoughts.

"It is you!" Forgetting everything, I ran up to him, stopping a few feet away. "I never thought I would see you again!"

Zeref-sama stepped back, as if he was unsure of who I was. He began to speak.

"Who are you?"

Ouch. I wince, remembering that I had changed a lot in six years. I appeared 14 or 15 now, and he saw me last at the age around seven.

"I'm Demetria- I know I look different-" I begin to explain, but he interrupts.

"Demetria? The one who trained with Igneel and Khone?" He asks, and I nod energetically. He remembers!

"Impossible. She died 700 years ago. You can't be her."

What? I didn't die. I just got aged up for a bit and lost Igneel's scent trail. That's all. And 700 years? I know Zeref-sama was basically immortal, but I sure wasn't.

"Um... I do not know what you mean," I say, "I may have came close a month or so ago, but I'm sure I would know if I died,"

Zeref-sama watched me as a thought came to my mind.

"I know! I will prove it by showing you my magic!" I say. In my years at the guild, I knew that most people didn't even know what Dragonslaying magic was, non the less what it looked like.

"Ice dragon's roar!" I exclaim, placing my hands around my mouth in a sort of tunnel. Ice came out, coating the ground in front of me with ice. But I wasn't done yet.

"And... Fire Dragon's Roar!" Quickly the earth melted, and I stood, grinning at Zeref-sama.

"See? Told ya!!" I fist pump in the air, feeling great letting my real magic out after so long.

"How?" My grin evolved into a wide smile as the emotion of shock came onto Zeref-sama's normally reserved face.

"I dunno. I headed down the mountain when you and Dad left, and by the time I got to a nearby town, I discovered that my age had gone up." I shrug, and scratch the back of my head.

"Demetria, Igneel and I haven't seen each other in 700 years. You dissapeared 700 years ago." My grin faded as I realise what he is saying.

"That's impossible.... I would be dead if that-" I stop, recalling how different the people had looked when I arrived at that town, six years ago.

"Unless you went through a portal." I heard Zeref-sama say, but I shook my head.

"There was nothing of the sort." I hesitated, "Although... when I came to the town, I saw a group of people. Some of them resembled the other Dragon slayers," I say, recalling the two that reminded me of Natsu and Wendy.

"Did one of them look like Natsu?" I nod.

"One had pink, spiky hair and a white scarf that smelled of Dad," I reply, tapping my chin, "He looked about 17, and he had a guild mark on his right shoulder."

Zeref-sama nods, before saying, "That is Natsu. A few months after you disappeared, Igneel and the other dragons, along with a Celestial wizard, sent Natsu and the others to the current time, only roughly 17 years ago. They were all unintentionally split up, and Natsu ended up joining a wizarding guild."

"Hold on," I say, holding my hands up, "that actually was Natsu? My kid brother?" Man, he grew up! Wait, that meant he was older than me. "Then he's..."

"Still 17." Zeref-sama avoided my gaze, before saying "you need to go. I don't want to hurt you."

Immediately, I moved away, remembering what Dad has told me. I heard some noise from the guildhall, so I decided to head back.

"Thank you, Zeref-sama. I hope to see you again soon!" I call, bowing, and quickly ran to get my dropped goods.

After grabbing my things, I held myself back from running straight into the guild hall. I came out from the treeline, pausing to slow my breath to a steady rate.

"I'm back," I call, just as an overjoyed Romeo runs up to me.

"They're back! They're finally back!" He exclaims, tears of joy coming from his eyes.

"Who's back?" I ask, puzzled, before taking in the sight before me.

The interior of the guildhall I had just entered was a disaster zone. Door is in shambles, tables knocked over, ice in random spots, chairs in splinters all across the floor. But the members of this guild was smiling like no tomorrow. Even Romeo and his father, both of which hadn't smiled since I had arrived.

But that wasn't all.

Standing in various parts of the room were people I didn't recognize; A tall man with white hair, a woman with similar hair, but a warm smile, a lady with dark blue hair and wearing something similar to a rain poncho. And then, I saw him. His back was to me, but I saw his crazy pink hair that was untenable, the white, scaly-looking scarf around his neck, that stance that you could tell he thought he was unstoppable.

Natsu.

Time seemed to slow as I uttered his name, as he turned around to look behind him. A smile found it's way to my face for a split second, only a second, as I saw no spark of recognition in his eyes.

He didn't know who I was.
