Chapter 25- Awkward Family Reunion

We walked out of the golden dome and onto a long bridge that seemed almost translucent and flowing with colors, which led to a ginormous gate that was guarded heavily. Thor and I engaged in small talk as we walked on and I had to stop myself from gasping at every new view, as each was more beautiful than the last. I agreed that I would spar with him after I had spoken with Odin, and a grin stretched across his face as I told him of some of my adventures, and he shared some of his past battles with me.

When I told him about my powers over the soul, he immediately begged me to use my banshee screech on him so he could see what it felt like, which reminded me of something Ban had once asked me when I first met him.

Flashback

It was late evening and for the first time I shared a fire with the sins after a job; though, thankfully, they ignored me for the most part. I hadn't been around normal humans consistently since I had left my village almost two hundred years ago now, and I wasn't sure how to handle this situation.

Of course, Meliodas and Ban were drunk out of their minds, and so when Ban approached me, I stiffened and pulled myself further into my hood that I had yet to take off, "So, Janis, I hear you have a wicked power that lets you kill people easily, that sounds like fun, you should hit me with it, I mean, you barely fought today, so I am starting to doubt that you can do anything."

I shook my head at him and looked away, I knew that he was drunk but to think that I did nothing was ridiculous. I did my best to stay out of the limelight, and my efforts were far more covert, but I took out more people than all of the others combined, simply by changing into my mist body and going throughout the ranks killing hundreds. When would they realize that the King named me to be the best assassin in the kingdom for a reason?

Ban kept mocking me, obviously trying to get a rise out of me, but I was good at ignoring people like him. "Come on, Ban, leave her alone; if she doesn't want to show you, then don't make her." Diane called out to him, which surprised me; Diane had only ever shown outright disdain for me because that was all Captain treated me with, and she was a total groupie towards him.

"No, she is part of the team now, she should open up and share her powers with us; I'm not going to leave her alone until she reacts," Ban said with surprising sobriety and then he turned back to me to continue teasing me. Before he could get anything else out, I summoned Durendal and engaged my mist body with a whisper; everyone's eyes widened as I literally vanished into the mist. I rematerialized behind him and did my quietest banshee screech, which caused him to collapse immediately.

Meliodas jumped to his feet and yelled at me, "What did you do to him, death bringer? I swear, if you hurt any of my teammates, I will kill you!" I bowed my head in acknowledgment of his words and then pointed to Ban, who was stirring.

"My banshee screech simply drained enough energy to incapacitate him; technically yes, I could kill him with that, but I have far better control over my powers than to do something like that by accident." My voice was low and almost raspy, as I hadn't used much at all over the years, and my teammates backed away from me as they heard this, which made me sigh and walk away from the fire, I could tell when I wasn't wanted somewhere, and I knew that there would be a job waiting for me when I returned to the castle.

End Flashback

"Thor, I would love to show you how my powers work, but let's do it after we spar, I would hate to drain all of the energy from you before we even got started," I said with a smile, I wasn't the same person I had been then, I had friends who were willing to support me, I could trust myself to open up finally.

I walked into a room that Thor told me was Odin's throne room; though, to be honest, I would have figured that out on my own because of the ornate throne in the middle of the room, that looked familiar. It took me a few seconds to place it, but this was similar to the throne Hel had in her palace.

Sitting on the throne was an intimidating old man with an eye-patch over one eye and a large scepter. I approached the throne, then bowed my head, unsure of the proper protocol to follow when greeting a king of gods.

"My son has told me that you have been in contact with Hel, the daughter of Loki, is this true?" I nodded but internally I was throwing him a critical look, this man once considered Loki to be his son, didn't he? What was with this cold tone about when it came to his own adopted children?

"It is, she is the one who informed me that Loki was trying to break into our realm and that the world of the dead was suffering because of it."

His serious gaze didn't change, if anything, he glared even more, "How do I know that we can trust the word of the daughter of Loki, as well as that of an omen of death? You could be leading us into a trap, and I will not do that to any of my people.

This time I couldn't contain my scowl, "Then why did you ask us to come here? Obviously, you thought that there was something to our claims for you to invite me here; I can provide proof, and honestly, you might not like the answer."

He motioned for me to continue, "There is something called a mind link, it comes in different forms, but the one that I am suggesting is simply a transferal of memories. If you don't like that idea, you could always speak with Hel personally I doubt she would mind."

"Neither of those would give me solid proof of what you say, I still will not give you aid if I am uncertain." He looked as though he was ready to send me away, but I took a step forward in anger.

"Well I'm sorry that I cannot drag Loki here to prove what he's been doing, and I can't give you absolute proof on what I am saying, but I can tell you this; if Loki takes over my realm, Asgard will be in serious danger. I may have more power than most people in my realm, but magic is not a rare thing, and we make formidable opponents. If you choose to underestimate this situation, you will regret it, and more of your people will be in danger than there would if you were to trust me; in the end, your ignorance is far more expensive than you could ever imagine, are you willing to take that risk?" I said sternly.

He looked taken aback, I doubted that anyone had ever spoken to him like this before; he sat quietly for a moment, considering his options, "Let me speak to Hel." Was all he said in a much quieter tone.

Without my prompting, I could feel Hel take over with a quick warning, "I won't be able to stay for long, Janis, I have been in your body for too long as it is, if I stay too long, you would be facing severe repercussions."

"Hello Grandfather, it has been a while, hasn't it?" She said with a good amount of venom in her voice.

"Hel, tell me news of your father." Odin said, with minimal concern in his voice.

"I suppose I should have seen this coming, not even a greeting for the granddaughter you cast out as soon as you discovered my existence." I wasn't even really a part of this conversation, but I could feel the ice growing between these two.

"I care not for such pleasantries if the person I am speaking with is the child of a traitor."

"I have had less contact with my father than you have; I was able to speak to him up until I was only twenty years before you cut that out, now I am over six hundred years old! If either of us has a reason to not trust the other, it would be I that would have reason to not trust you."

The two glared at each other and I began to fear that a fight would break out soon if this kept going, but Hel cut off Odin right as he was about to throw a retort back, "Helheim is beginning to crumble, and all the devastation reeks of Loki's power; I was uncertain until I consulted with my brother on this, and he agreed with me. I enlisted Janis and her team mates to fight him, but they will need some help if they are to succeed with minimal casualties to their realm. They have already faced one evil that was lesser than Loki, and many died, they aren't ready for a foe of his caliber."

She sent a wave of memories his way and then left me, not caring to see the result of her speech. "Child," Odin addressed me, I was assuming that he could sense that Hel had left me, "Is what she says true? Were your people only barely able to defeat a grey demon?" I nodded, "Leave me for now, I must think over what I've been shown." I nodded deeply and nearly ran from the room, I would rather have faced that grey demon all by myself than be alone in the room with an irritated Odin.

As soon as the doors closed behind me, Thor came around a corner and a wide grin split his face, "Lady Janis, you have wonderful timing, now that you are done with my father, we can now spar! Follow me to the training grounds." I sighed and did as he asked, it seemed like today I would be able to get no breaks, it would just be one thing after another.
