Chapter 17- Consequences
We walked back into the sunlight and I shielded Ban and Hawk from a blast that was sent our way, "What in the world is going on?" Ban muttered and walked up to Meliodas, who was struggling to stand.
I saw the look in his eyes and caught up with him, "Ban don't. Remember that the Goddesses were lying, they can't bring back Elaine and if they did, it would be as a hollow shell of the woman she was." He took a deep breath and turned to me.
"I promised her that I would see her again, I'm sorry Janis, but I have to at least try."
He was about to lunge at the Captain, when I grabbed his arm, "Oh no you don't!" He looked like he wanted to take a swing at me, "I can take you to the visitor's side of the Necropolis when you want to go, so don't make the mistake of alienating one of your best friends for something stupid like this. If it'll make you feel better, then challenge him to a duel later, but we have bigger issues on our hands right now." He grunted and walked to the bedraggled group slowly.
Meliodas looked more panicked than I had ever seen him and before I could even ask what was wrong, he looked at me and shouted, "He took her, Hendrickson took Elizabeth, and she just let him do it! We have to go after them!" I nodded and walked over to him.
"Captain, we all right beside you, so don't worry about it, I know that you want to save her, so you go on and we'll make sure no one gets hurt." He nodded and then dropped onto Hawk, falling asleep right away as Hawk yelled to Elizabeth that they were coming.
I turned to everyone to form a plan when I was suddenly whisked away into my death vision room; I saw Elizabeth lying on the ground in a puddle of blood, and Meliodas cradled her head as he sobbed. My eyes widened as Hendrickson appeared behind Meliodas and stabbed him through the chest, causing blood to erupt from Meliodas' mouth and he collapsed on top of Elizabeth. Hels words ran through my head as I saw this, 'If he dies now, then so will this world.' I came to myself and saw everyone looking at me with concern in their eyes, "Guys, there's been a change of plans, I'm going after Meliodas, you take care of everyone else." I started running away, yelling over my shoulder, "I'll explain later, I promise!" I knew that I was not allowed to stop the deaths that I had seen, but this circumstance was a bit different, and I was willing to accept the punishment for saving the world.
I found Elizabeth right as Hendrickson shot a bolt of energy was fired at her and I realized that to stop Meliodas' death, I had to stop Elizabeth's. I used my mist body to get in-between her and the bolt and I deflected it just in time and then launched an attack on Hendrickson myself, though I was quickly incapacitated as pain shot through my head. I was only barely able to tell that Meliodas had finally gotten here and was continuing my fight with him as I dropped to my knees; all the death I had prevented by saving these two-people appeared and I cursed. I couldn't even number the amount, it was so vast, but there was a sense of pride in the fact that I had just saved everyone I loved as well as the good majority of the country.
I felt myself being pulled away, and I groaned, this was not going to be good.

I don't know how much time had passed since I had lost consciousness; but ever since I had woken up, I was in a dark cell, with my hands shackled above my head, and my feet barely brushing against the floor. Durendal's presence was not with me, so I couldn't use my mist body to get out of this, and I knew that all of my connections with others had been severed.
"Well, well, well, what do we have here? The Necropolis' hope has broken the rules, and in a major way too. How shameful." Whoever was in this room with me was practically cackling with glee, "I don't think I've seen a banshee screw up this royally since... well... ever! My dear, I don't think you realize how much joy you've brought me with this, because now I have a new subject here to test!"
"Who are you? Where am I?" I asked groggily, though it came out sounding more like a croak.
"Don't you know my dear? You're in Hell, where naughty banshees come to rot, it's a sadists dream come true." He sighed dreamily and I glared around the room, trying to spot my tormenter from the shadows.
"You have the advantage on me, you know who I am, and why I'm here, but I have no idea who you are."
"Isn't it obvious, Hel doesn't have time to deal with you people, so she pawns them off onto me, her own dear brother, so that I can have something to do in my days of eternal bondage."
I gasped as I realized who this was, "You're Fenris, brother of Hel and son of Loki. I thought that you were bound for all eternity?" I rolled my shoulders, trying to relieve some of the strain on them.
"You are a clever one, aren't you! Yes, I am Hel's adoring brother, and yes, I have been bound by the God's until Ragnarok comes. I do however get bored, and my sister isn't willing to let me play with most of her souls, so she has limited me to dealing only with those of the wicked banshees or the ones like you who were just too selfless for their own good."
"How long do I have to stay down here? I was never told the specifics of the sentencing." I asked hesitantly, I knew that I needed to get out of here and get back to the sins, but how could I get out now?
"Well, it all depends on the sins of the condemned. You saved several thousand souls from death, which, if I'm being honest, could allow me to keep you here indefinitely." I stared at his shadow in shock, would he really keep me here for an eternity? I thought I was needed in the world above, I had confidence in the other sins, but I wanted to be there to help them out.
As if he read my mind, Fenris chuckled, "Oh my dear, your brain is such a complex place, it's as though you have a flock of sparrows flitting about in your head and they all refuse to land. Oh, and yes, I can read your thoughts." He walked closer to me and I was finally able to get a good look at him. He had spiky silver hair, with yellow eyes that had slits for pupils, he was dressed in black punk clothes and even had a silver studded choker collar on. His ears each had several piercings as did his eyebrows and nose. I was surprised that he looked this way when he had such a flamboyant voice, it seemed like such a contradiction.
He drew one of his sharp black fingernails over my skin and grinned with a perverse pleasure, "I hope you're ready for this fun, I hope you know that you cannot die while in this realm, you are my toy until I choose to let you go, which I doubt I'll be doing anytime soon."
I squirmed away from him as much as I could, "I would much rather be touched by a hound of Hell than by you. Torture me as much as you like, but could you please keep the physical contact to a minimum, you repel me." I knew that speaking like this was not in my best interest, but I could only hope that it would provoke him to simply beat me and not do anything more.
As I predicted, he snarled at me and slapped me across the face, I could feel the marks his claw-like fingernails left on my face, and I spat out the blood that was seeping into my mouth since he had cut over it. That wasn't the last of it though, he beat me until I was absolutely covered in marks, and I could tell that this truly was his only source of entertainment.
I had no way to tell how long this went on, but eventually, a voice called, "Fenris? What have you been doing down here my brother?" It was Hel, and she seemed upset.
I could see the irritation that flashed off Fenris' face clearly, "The same thing that I have been doing for the last millennia, now go away!"
There were soft steps that drew closer, "Oh? And what would that be, my brother? You wouldn't happen to have anyone in there with you, by chance?" I could feel the power flowing off Hel as she came closer, and the irritation began to turn to worry for Fenris.
"And if I do? You have no right to refuse me the souls I am owed, dearest sister." I finally saw a light glowing, and there stood Hel, looking at Fenris with distaste evident on her face.
"Perhaps you are owed certain souls, but not this one. I have spoken to several people, and you are required to release this one immediately, she may have broken the rules, but she is needed in her home more than she needs punishment. I have seen her future, and it is punishment enough."
"What if I don't want to let her go? She is strong and has a tasty spirit, so I would like to keep her." Fenris snuck behind me and slowly wrapped his arms around my waist possessively.
"Sorry, brother, that isn't an option, I have spoken with the greater Gods and they believe that it would be best for her to be among the world of the living. I know that she has broken the rules, but we know that she will be of a greater benefit to us free. Don't worry, if she does anything like this again, she will be in your possession."
Fenris sighed in frustration but snapped his fingers and I was dropped to the ground; the lacerations he left stung, and I was left unable to move for a few moments until he whispered in my ear, "What is it, my dearest banshee? Do you want to stay with me so badly that you simply can't bring yourself to leave?"
That certainly was the motivation that I needed, I staggered to my feet and limped to Hel, who stood before us, looking at the whole scene passively. She grabbed my arm, and the next moment, we were in her throne room, "I wish I could ask you why you acted in such a foolish manner, Janis; but I cannot, I understand entirely why you did that and just what you accomplished. I am in your debt."
I was extremely confused by this, "What do you mean? You are the one who just saved me from a future of torture and pain, how could I be in your debt?"
"You just saved the world, Janis. If you hadn't have stopped Meliodas from dying, then my father would have no resistance when he breaks through the barrier, you must understand how important that is." She looked at me with reluctant admiration, "There aren't many people out there who will do the right thing when the cost is so high, you are among the minority in this matter."
She waved her hand and a servant came out holding Durendal, "I will send you back now, but you must take your sword, you will need it in your coming battles." I bowed and took it back, "Perhaps you should try experimenting with what Durendal can do, your Mother and Father were playing with it, and you never know what they are up to, I certainly sense more power coming off it now."
Before I could respond, she waved her hand again and I was gone. I reappeared in the middle of a flowering field; there were knights all around me, and many of them appeared to be dead. I looked around for people I knew, but I couldn't just ignore the people suffering all around me, I doubt that they had been able to say goodbye to their loved ones judging on their reactions.
I sat down and prepared myself to use more magic than I ever had before and cast a spell that I hadn't used since Zaratras died, "Reveal." I felt my energy draining, but the souls of all those who had died appeared by the ones who loved them most. I heard laughing and cheering all around me but it couldn't last forever I whispered so the souls could hear me, "Say your final goodbyes now, I can't keep you in this state forever, you will have to go soon, please make peace with this."
I shut down my senses and did my best to preserve the spell for as long as I could, which ended up being around ten minutes. I gave one final warning and then the spell shattered and I quickly directed the souls to the next world, which took even more energy out of me.
I stood shakily and walked in the direction my friends' energy was lingering and saw them all huddling around something small and pink. Somehow, Hawk had shrunk down to this size and they were all crying in happiness; I didn't want to interrupt this moment, I felt like such an outsider, but I wanted to know that they were all okay.
"Hey, do any of you know where Janis went?" Ban asked with worry in his eyes and I hung back for just a moment more to see what they would say.
"I don't know, she saved me, and then she just vanished, we haven't seen her since then." Elizabeth said sadly and I stepped forward, wanting to let them know I was okay.
"Hey now Elizabeth, don't count me out of the running just yet. I still have some time left!" They all whipped around and stared at me in disbelief, it was as though a ghost had come back from the dead.
"Janis?" Ban handed Hawk to Meliodas and ran over to me, "Where did you go! I was worried about you!" He embraced me, which caused me to wince away. He finally saw my cuts and bruises and his face darkened, "Who did this to you, Janis? Who do we need to kill?"
"No one, okay? I'll explain later, but why don't you tell me what's happened here, it looks like I missed a lot." I was then pulled into a hug by Elizabeth, who had a strange symbol in her eye and I felt my whole body heat up as a strange green field encircled us.
"Thank you, Lady Janis, you saved our lives, thank you so much." I patted her head and gasped as I noticed that my hand was fully healed, I looked closely at the symbol in Elizabeth's eye and gasped as I recognized it as the symbol of the goddesses. I just smiled as the pieces began to fall into place, this group was an odd one, but I loved it non-the less.
