Chapter twenty

Eve stomped down the stairs, Marcel's attention being drawn to his mother figure form his book.

"I can't do it anymore Marce" Eve huffed, rolling her eyes as she felt eyes on her.

"What'd he do this time?" Marcel asked, shutting his book and watching as Eve paced.

"I found this" Eve said angrily, holding up a hotel bill from down the street. "He told me it was nothing, but the current werewolf queen has been boasting of her night with Klaus Mikaelson" Eve mocked.

"Lana?" Her son questioned.

"Don't say her name" Eve snapped, sighing, then taking a deep breath. "I'm sorry, I just I can't do it anymore"

"Then leave" Nik walked down the stairs, an angry expression on his face. "You would believe the lies of some wolf over your own husband"

"Fine" the tension had been mounting between the two, tightening like a coil and ready to snap, ninety years of arguments and accusations, Eve was done.

She vamped up to their shared room, packing a bag hastily and was out the door before Nik could say 'wait'

I came to, groaning slightly, and opening my eyes. I was in a darkened room on a table maybe, it was stood up, facing a chair where I could just make out my unconscious husband. Nik was slumped against a bed, half of it up so he was half sitting.

Trying to move my limbs proved futile, they were tied town, and I could feel toxic vervain running through my veins, sapping my strength.

Nik was tied down in a similar way. A woman entered the run down room, her red hair being the first thing I saw.

"Hello" she greeted "my name is Genevieve, I'm going to reveal the truth about your betrayal" she smirked

My eyebrows furrowed together, my drowsy mind trying to come up with what I could've possibly done that she would be using against me right now.

Nik stirred, his reaction being the same as mine, he tugged against his restraints, glaring at the red head when he saw my state.

"Who are you?" Nik demanded.

"Genevieve, I'm a witch that died long ago, it was by your sister's hand by the way, I'm here to show you how your sister and your wife betrayed you" Nik's eyes narrowed turning to me.

"What did you do?" I shrugged, just as confused as him.

"I've never seen this woman" I responded, slightly baffled by the events.

"Oh don't worry, everything will be known in due time" Genevieve started mixing stuff into a bowl, humming a tune while she did so.

I pulled on my restraints again, trying my best to get out of this, the only possibility I can think of is my underhanded planning with Hayley, helping her sneak out of the house to see her pack.

But there was no way this chick knew about that. The red head walked over to Nik, placing the edge of the bowl against his lips. "Drink" she coaxed. "It'll show you the truth"

Stubbornly, Nik refused at first, but seeing that the witch wasn't going to leave it be, he hesitantly took a sip.

"Back in 1919, I worked at a hospital, Rebekah worked there too, I thought it strange that a vampire would want to help sick people" Genevieve chuckled. "Turns our she was just using me"

Furrowing my eyebrows again. "What does this have to do with me?" I questioned. "I was practically glued to Nik's side back then" Nik shot me a look, he had lost his trust in me long before I ran away.

"As I was saying" the witch rolled her eyes at me. "The friendship between me and Rebekah was only for her benefit" Nik's eyes rolled in the back of his head, whatever the red head had done was working. "One day your sister came to me with her boyfriend, Marcel, and asked that I bring back your father for a family get together, claiming that she missed him and wanted to see him again"

I gave the girl a confused look, Rebekah had confided in me weeks before Mikael had come, guilt eating away at her, it had already been months since she summoned the man, so I shrugged it off as a good sign, keeping it quiet from Nik.

How would she have known that though? I checked back into reality to see that I had drifted off, and now Nik was staring at me with a heated gaze.

"Your wife helped keep Mikael coming a secret" Genevieve whispered in his ear. A blank look was plastered on my husband's face, a sure sign he was plotting something.

"Nik, Rebekah came to me, she did, but she said that the message had been sent months before and there wasn't any sign of Mikael, I only kept it from you because I didn't want Bekah to suffer your wrath" I tried to explain, desperately pulling at my restraints once again. I had to get out of here, Nik was dangerously close to murderous.

The witch produced a wicked looking blade. "This is unlike your mystical daggers" she started, showing it to my husband "this causes untold pain to the one stabbed, even an original, but there's only one, so you have to choose, and the best part is, I'm not done telling you or your wife's treachery" she giggled darkly.

Nik gave the girl an emotionless look, a silent gesture to continue. "While Eve has been in New Orleans, she's been plotting behind your back, she helped Hayley sneak out under your nose, she's been talking to Marcel, and knew of Davina before you did, keeping her a secret from you, she's been planning to put you into a coffin as payback"

"Nik, NO! I haven't, she's planting ideas in your head" I pleaded, but the damage had already been done, Nik knew I was keeping secrets, I'm the one he's angry at, more so than Rebekah.

"Really?" The red head raised a brow. "So you didn't help Hayley sneak into the bayou? Because I was watching from beyond the grave. I watched Marcel introduce you to Davina the week before your precious Nik came to get you" she smirked, walking forward and undoing my bonds. "I'm going to give you a head start"

"Why are you doing this?" I demanded, falling to the floor in pain, still weak from my dose of vervain.

"Elijah knows, unfortunately for you" she held up the blade. "This will probably be in your heart forever, don't worry, I'll take good care of your husband" she grinned.

Standing was difficult but I knew I had a limited amount of time, she'd release Nik any second, and I had no interest in being in agony for eternity.

Stumbling my way down the hall, I ran into a delirious Rebekah. "Hey" I grabbed her attention, holding onto her arms for support, her entire body looked like it was covered in werewolf bites.

"Eve, we have to get out of here, Nik knows" Rebekah cried.

"Yeah well, the witch who kidnapped us gave Nik a weapon that gives the person who's stabbed unbearable pain, and I'm pretty sure I'm his target" I replied, equally as panicked.

"WIFE" Nik called, his voice echoing through the abandoned hallways. "REBEKAH"

"We have to run" Rebekah urged, we leaned on each other as we tried our very best to navigate the halls.

"YOU CANNOT HIDE FROM ME FOREVER" Nik's calls were getting uncomfortably close, Rebekah and I took a staircase down, hoping we'd find some sort of exit.

Discovering we were trapped we hid in a darkened corner, watching in fear as Nik came down the stairs slowly.

He stepped off the staircase, pointing the blade in our direction, knowing we had no other option, the two of us stepped out. "You" he pointed at Bekah. "Summoned the one person we all feared" then he pointed toward me "and you helped cover it up and were going behind my back"

Rebekah surged forward, only to be thrown through a wall behind her, Nik was already on the defense.

"Nik" I called his attention to me, my body aching as I stepped forward. "I hid Mikael being summoned from you, I admit that, I even helped Hayley find her pack, and I knew about Davina, I acknowledge what I did was wrong, but those were the only secrets I've been hiding, I never plotted behind your back to put you in a box! I didn't plot with Marcel to kick you out of the city, alright? The witch wove lies with truth"

I held my hands out in a placating gesture, like one would do with a wild animal. Nik sped forward, shoving me against a wall.

"You betrayed me" angry tears fell from his eyes. He positioned the blade above my heart, about to stab it in.

"Brother don't" I saw Elijah over Nik's shoulder, his arms carrying his unconscious sister. "The witches are trying to break our bond, always and forever"

Carefully Elijah set Rebekah against the wall by the stairs, approaching the two of us with caution.

Nik hadn't moved, the blade still above my heart. "She's done wrong Elijah" Nik defended.

"Yes, but she's also your wife, someone who's stood by your side longer than even myself, do not do this brother, she does not deserve it" Elijah warned.

My husband turned, the blade moving from its position, causing me to sigh in relief. "I can't let it go" Nik turned to me and I braced myself for pain, closing my eyes tight.

I felt Nik's body twist, the blade about to hit, but at the last second, something changed, my eyes shot open to see Elijah with his hand over Nik's, the blade sticking out of his chest.

"I apologize Niklaus, but I cannot allow you to do that" the eldest stepped away, letting Nik fall, and catching me as I slid down the wall.

The knife started sinking in Nik's chest, his eyes twitching endlessly. I looked up to my brother in-law. I didn't know whether to thank him or be angry that he did that.

Seeming to understand, Elijah pulled me closer for a hug, shielding Nik's body from my gaze.

"It'll be all right" he whispered. "We can take it out eventually"
