The Least I Could Do

~Mark

I woke up with a sharp gasp, sitting up as I observed my surroundings. I expected to be dead, but here I was in a little stone house, lying on a bed covered with a blanket of various furs stitched together. The man that I saw before I passed out was nowhere in sight. But what confused me the most was the light pink scar in place of the once heavily bleeding wound. I didn't even feel in pain. "Hello?" I called out, waiting for a response. I received no answer. I swung my feet over the side of the bed, landing on the soft dirt floor. Realizing I had no clothes on, I wrapped the blanket around my waist to cover my lower body. "Hello?" I repeated. The interior was basic, a walled off bathroom to my right, and a kitchen to my left, cabinet doors wide open and herbs strewn on the counters. It was then I saw him. He was lying unconscious by the toilet, his face extremely pale with something held tightly in his fist. I let out a low whistle as I approached him. After all, if he bothered taking me in, I doubt he intended to kill me now. I considered killing him instead and leaving this place, yet something stopped me. Just seeing him lying there.....so helpless. Killing him now would be cowardly, and I was not a coward. "Wake up." I said gruffly, nudging his shoulder with my foot. He stirred instantly, his ocean blue eyes flickering open to look at me. "Feeling better?" He asks weakly, using the edge of the toilet to help him stand. I caught him before he fell over, his legs badly shaking. "I'm fine, but you're obviously not." I helped him over to his bed where I previously slept. "What happened to you?" I sat in the edge of the bed beside him. "It takes a lot of energy to heal people." He gestured at the light pink scar that was already beginning to fade as well. "How-" He showed me a bloodstained white fang shaped amulet with a bright green eye ball at the top, connected to a black strip of leather that hung around his neck. "Like I told you before, I'm a healer. This is Seipteach. It was gift from my mother." He smiled fondly. "I have to press it to the wound and say a specific chant for it to work though." He explained. "If you're a healer, why did you shoot me?" I argued. "That wasn't me." He assured me. I eyed him suspiciously, but let the subject drop. Suddenly I heard a knock on the door. "Please, can you wait under the bed?" He begged. I considered arguing, then begrudgingly agreed. It was slightly uncomfortable, but not too bad. "Are you okay Sean, you look sick." I faintly heard an unfamiliar voice as the door opened. The only thing I could see was a pair of feet standing outside. "I'm fine Nate, really." More footsteps followed away from the door to the cabinets. "So, you need more medicine for sore throat?" I heard the clinking of glass and creaking of wood. "Yeah, its been really helpful for my singing." I poked my head out from under the bed to see the newcomer. He had fringed black hair, brown eyes, and pale skin like Sean. I quickly ducked back when he looked over at me. "Did you see that?" Nate pointed at my hiding spot. "What?" Sean asked innocently. I was surprised at what a good liar he was. "Nevermind." He sighed. "Thanks for the medicine." There were more footsteps and the creaking of wood before everything was silent once more. I crawled out from under my hiding spot. "Sorry about that." Sean apologized. "Why are you being so nice to me? I'm part of the Lupius clan!" I blurted. "I know." He answered calmly. "But a life is a life, no matter the clan they may belong to." On and on the process of hiding under the bed continued late into the evening. I was starting to get hungry. Once the last person left, I stretched my arms over my head and yawned. "I'll go find some berries-" "I'm a hunter. Let me do my job. Besides, it's the least I could do." I smiled, glad to be hunting again. "You might want clothes first." Sean pointed out with a wry smirk. I looked down and realized I still had the blanket wrapped around me. I felt my face heat up with embarrassment as Sean handed me my clothes and politely turned around. Once fully clothed, he somewhat reluctantly handed me his bow and arrows. "Take only what we need." He called out after me as I walked through the door. I rolled my eyes and ignored him. This is going to be fun, I thought as I shot down a sparrow mid flight.
