Chapter 7: My brother is missing, I can't leave camp, and I get a prophecy
We were standing their in silence when suddenly Rachel staggered backwards. Looking at her, I saw that her eyes were green. Please tell me this isn't happening right now; the last thing we needed was a prophecy to be issued right now. I waited for her to turn and address the poor soul who was going to be forced to go on a quest but she never did. Rachel straightened her posture and then started to speak,
"At a crossroads in her life, the Hunter must choose what path to take.
No matter which option she picks, more than just her life is at stake.
Because of the fault of another, the one she loves most will be taken.
With all of the problems that she will face, her ability to trust will be shaken.
By the time two weeks have come and gone, a battle will take place between her and a god.
At the end of the final dawn, she will have proven whether she is a true hero or a fraud."
It took a second to sink in and then full panic mode overcame me.
"Where's Michael," I shouted. I hated the idea of having a quest but just like always I was more worried about his safety than I was mine. Also if I managed to keep him safe than just maybe I'd be able to alter the prophecy. "Someone tell me where my brother is." Spinning around, I tried to spot him but he wasn't anywhere.
"Jessica," my head snapped towards Chiron. The centaur nervously looked in the direction where the monsters and demigods were now fighting. My heart sank to the pit of my stomach.
"No, no, no," I muttered quietly. "You're lying. Those are senior campers; Michael isn't with them." I shoved my way through the crowd of demigods who were all staring at me with sad expressions on their faces. I prayed Michael would pop out of nowhere and scare me but that never happened. Turning so I was looking at Chiron, I screamed, "why the hell did you let him go with them? You specifically said that it was only for senior campers but you let an 11 year old go. Why?" Tears were streaming down my face.
"I did not realize until to late," Chiron explained. "The only reason I noticed he was missing to start with was because he was no longer standing next to you." I shifted my gaze to my fellow campers, some of whom were Hermes campers and also appeared quite worried about Michael.
"And the rest of you," I said softly. "Why did none of you point out the fact that he went with them? Why were all of you alright with letting an 11 year old prance off into battle?" All of them looked at each other, the ground, the sky; they looked anywhere but at me. I shrugged. "Fine, be that way." I took one step in the direction of the battle and Chiron immediately moved so he was blocking my path.
"Where do you think you are going?" He questioned.
"To go protect my brother," my voice was even but my heart was pounding.
"You are not allowed to leave camp," Chiron reminded me. "I am sorry about Michael and I understand that it must be hard for you to leave him, but there are plenty of campers already out there who can protect him. James is with him and I am certain that he will do everything in his power to protect Michael." While I knew that James would do all he could to keep Michael safe, there was a quiet nagging voice in the back of my head that was leading me to believe that James had helped Michael sneak out. Despite knowing that the other campers would look out for Michael, it was not physically possible for me to stay here and do nothing.
"I'm sorry but I have to go after him," I told Chiron as I moved around him. "You heard what the prophecy said, no matter what, more than just my life is at stake. And part of the reason another life is at stake is that Michael is supposed to get taken, I can't let that happen." Once I got past Chiron, I started to run. Sprinting as fast as I could, I prayed I'd get there in time. In the distance I could hear Chiron yell,
"What about Artemis's wishes." As much as I respected and cared for Artemis, even her desire for me to not leave the camp wasn't enough to get me to stay put. Michael meant the world to me. Right as I was about to cross the border of the camp, I had two main thoughts: I'm sorry Artemis and I'm coming Michael. With that, I leaped into battle.
