Chapter 21: An unexpected visitor
James was munching on his Bacon Cheese Burger like he had zero worries in the world. I on the other hand was cautiously picking at my food. The food was fine but I hated feeling confined to the building.
"Would you relax," James asked, noticing that I had barely touched my meal.
"Sure," he raised his eyebrows skeptically. "I'll relax when pigs fly."
"Come on Jess," he stretched out the s sound at the end. "You need to maintain your strength if you're going to have a chance at success." I glared at him while I grudgingly took a bite of food; he smirked knowing that he had won.
"Yeah Jess, eating this one meal could be the difference between you defeating an immortal Olympian and saving your precious little brother or you failing at everything." The new voice may have been contorted to mock and belittle me, but I could tell immediately that it came from a powerful speaker. All of the color left James's face as he stared up at the figure who stood in front of our table. "Mind if I take a seat?" The voice was no longer mocking me, nor was it actually asking me a question. In the blink of an eye, a grown male dressed in all leather who radiated power, was sitting across the table from me. Even though I had only met him once, I didn't hesitate in saying his name.
"What do you want Ares?" I snapped at him. His eyebrows rose at the sound of my tone but before he could say anything, I continued speaking. "Or better yet, how in the name of my father did you find me?" Ares chuckled coldly, swiped some fries off of James plat, and then smirked at me.
"You did a good job concealing yours and my boys scent but you have no power over his dreams." At this, James and I automatically looked at each other. He had a look of confusion on his face, while I had a sense of paranoia racing through my body.
"Who else knows where we are?" I asked Ares, intentionally trying to avoid discussing what he just said. James was having none of my deflecting though.
"What does he mean by you've done a good job concealing our scent?" James questioned me. Ares chuckled again.
"Oops, was that supposed to stay a secret?" I knew he was trying to mess with me and get under my skin, and that I shouldn't let him, but I couldn't stop myself.
"Shut up," all of the humor left Ares expression at the sound of these two words.
"You better get rid of that attitude." He warned me. The power in his voice almost made me want to cringe but I stood my ground.
"Or else what?" I asked bitterly. "You can't touch me without getting on Lady Artemis's bad side and you know it." Ares crossed his arms, leaned back in his seat, and then responded.
"I don't have to harm you to make your life a living hell." This comment made me laugh darkly. Copying posture, I didn't break eye contact with him while I spoke.
"My brother's missing, my life already is a living hell." I said truthfully. "So I ask you again, what do you want?" Ares shrugged.
"Just thought I'd come have a chat with my son and his little friend," before I could say anything, he continued. "I wasn't planning to come find you guys, but after having a nice conversation with James in his dream last night I figured it wouldn't hurt to stop in and say hello." Betrayal crashed through my body but I did my best to keep it hidden.
"Who else knows we're here?" I asked him.
"No one." Ares must have clearly seen that I didn't believe him because he proceeded to add, "I swear on the River Styx that I didn't tell anyone. I don't want your quest to end. Tension is running high amongst all of the gods, it's really entertaining. If you got sent back to camp, well what would be the fun in that." For some reason, I believed him. I still didn't trust him and was uneasy about him being here, but that was beyond the point.
"So what's the real reason why you're here?" I asked him. Acting as if he had all of the time in the world, the Olympian God of War casually grabbed a few more fries and stood up.
"Just thought I'd do ya a favor and provide a reminder that just because you're a member of the hunt that doesn't mean that you're invincible." With that, he strolled out of the restaurant and never looked back. Once I was sure that he was gone, I turned my attention back on James who was suddenly looking everywhere but at me. He and I definitely had some things to talk about.
