Chapter 15: Travel plans get postponed for the night
My stomach growled but I ignored it. James stomach growled and he complained.
"Can we please take a break," he whined. "Maybe go find somewhere we can get food?" I rolled my eyes. My brother was missing and all James could do was complain.
"Listen," I snapped. "I agreed to let you come on this quest under the impression that you would listen to what I say. And I say that we don't need to get food yet." I tried to sound confident in what I said, and I did believe that we could go longer without food, but my stomach betrayed me. James grabbed my shoulder and pulled me back. I shrugged his hand off of me but I looked him in the eyes. "What." My tone was harsh but he didn't looked phased.
"Jess," my glare hardened. "I mean Jessica. It's getting late, we need to rest. I know you want to find Michael. I want to find Michael to you know. But if we're sleep deprived and starved when we finally find him, we'll be in no shape to help him." As much sense as his argument made, I still had a counterargument.
"We had a solid meal this morning," I reminded him. "Technically speaking we can make it three weeks without food. Our bodies might start to deteriorate as time goes by but we'd live." A look of worry flashed into his face. "Relax, we're not going to go three weeks without food. As you pointed out, we need to be in good shape in order to help Michael." James let out a breath that I wasn't even sure he knew he had been holding. "But that doesn't mean we're going to stop and get food now." James groaned.
"Do you even know where we need to go?" He asked, clearly taking a different angle. This was where I had to pause. I wanted to say yes but James would be able to call me on my lie. I had an idea of where we were headed but it wasn't a definite course of action. James was able to sense my hesitation. "Here's what I propose. We call it a nigh and get some rest. We can set up the tent here. When we wake up we can figure out how to get some food and then we will immediately pick up our search for Michael." I bit my bottom lip. His plan did sound appealing, even though I didn't want to admit it. He sighed and then continued speaking. "Look, you're going to be able to track him better if you get some rest. The starting point of a quest is always important because it sets the tone for the rest of the journey." After hearing this, I decided to finally cave.
"Alright, we can stop for the night." A big smile appeared on his face. "But we're only stopping because your whining is getting on my nerves and I know that Michael would want me to take care of myself." With that I motioned for him to step back. Looking down at my wrist, I grabbed the tent charm and pulled. Just like Leo had said it would, the bracelet snapped off of my wrist. The second it lost contact with my skin, the charm started to grow. I quickly set it on the ground and backed away from it; I watched in amazement as a normal sized tent replaced what had been a silver charm just seconds before.
"Woah," James said and I nodded. Slowly stepping towards it, I unzipped the flap and walked inside. James followed behind me. Soon we were standing right next to each other and taking in our surroundings. Leo had really outdone himself. There were two beds, a table, a comfortable looking chair, and even a miniature fridge. Turning around, I zipped up the tent flap. Then I leaped over to my bed.
"It's so soft," I said while giggling. For a moment I was almost happy, then I remembered why I had the tent and what was going on. James clearly recognized the drop in my mood. He walked over towards me and say down next to me. He gently placed his arm over my shoulder.
"It's going to be ok," he said softly. I leaned into him. A comfortable silence passed between us as we sat together.
