Chapter 13: I get a gift even though my quest is not approved of

The phrase awkward silence, want even strong enough to describe the atmosphere of the living room. James and I sat side-by-side on the couch while Leo, who was sitting on the opposite side of the coffee table, was staring at us. He had opened his mouth, and looked like he was ready to speak, at least five times but so far he hadn't said anything. As much as I hated silence though, there was no way in Hades that I was going to be the first one to speak. Not in this situation. If I said one wrong word I had a feeling that Leo might explode. After what felt like an eternity, Calypso walked in carrying two bowls of what smelled liked her famous homemade soup. As soon as she placed the bowls in front of me and James on the coffee table, he and I lunged for them.  Though James had been the one to immediately say yes to getting food, I had grown hungrier than I had cared to admit. I was aware that I probably looked like a starving person as I ate but I didn't care. For a while, the only noise in the room came from me and James as we ate. It wasn't until the two of us put our now empty bowls back onto the coffee table that the adults started to talk.
"Do you realize how worried you've left everyone at camp?" Leo asked at the same time that Calypso said,
"I'm sorry about Michael." The sound of his name made my body tense up. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw James have the same reaction.
"Out of curiosity," I began slowly. "What have you guys been told about everything that has happened?" Leo and Calypso shared a look. A silent conversation seemed to pass between the two of them.
"We were told about Michael," Leo said slowly. "And then we were told that you were given a prophecy, disobeyed Artemis's orders about not leaving camp, and then finally that the two of you were missing." He finished.
"Michael's not dead," I said bluntly. "As a daughter of Hades I would know if he was. Since he's not, I need to go save him." To me, my logic was simple and clear. But based off of the facial expressions of Leo and Calypso, they didn't feel the same way.
"Sweetie," Calypso said softly. "It's not safe for you to go and try to find him." Leo proceeded to jump into the conversation,
"Calypso, just like normal, is right." He said. "I know it goes against all of your instincts to sit back and not try to save him, but that's what is best for you in this situation. Michael would want you to be safe." I nearly slammed my hand on the coffee table out of anger; the only thing that stopped me was the fact that their kids were still asleep.
"Screw what you think Michael would want," I whisper-yelled angrily. "What Michael might want and what Michael needs are two different things. And if you expect me to sit back and do nothing while he's in danger than you know nothing about me." It took all of my self-control to be able to keep my voice level. The audacity that they had to suggest that I should not try to save Michael was absurd; he was my world and I needed to help him.
"There's no changing your mind, is there?" Leo questioned.
"No chance what so ever," I replied truthfully.
"So what did you come here for?" Calypso asked. This was the moment of truth; they would either help my cause or hurt my cause depending on how they responded to my next request.
"I, or really we, need more weapons." I said honestly. "All I have is my bow and James just has his sword. While we're both above averagely skilled with said weapons, we need to be prepared incase something happens to these weapons. You get what I'm saying?" A look of recognition as to why we were here seemed to finally flash onto James face. Leo and Calypso both looked hesitant though. "Keep in mind that whether you help us be better prepared or not, we're still going on this quest." I pointed out to them. Leo sighed but proceeded to stand.
"I do not approve of you running away from camp and going on this quest," he said bluntly. "But I'll feel at least a bit better about it if I know that you are well prepared for it. So come on," with that he motioned for us to stand and we followed him to his workshop. His and Calypsos shop was where he did most of his work, but he did have one room in the house that was a miniature forge. After he entered the code to unlock it, he ushered us inside of it. Immediately he moved to the table where he kept his completed weapons, Leo started muttering to himself as he moved things around. James, Calypso, and I stood off to the side quietly, not wanting to interrupt Leo's train of thought.
"Found it," Leo shouted suddenly. He spun around on the balls of his feet so he was facing us. He motioned for James to come forward. "This is for you," he handed James a silver watch. "If you twist it to the right it becomes a dagger and if you twist it to the left it becomes a spear." James moved to turn it but Leo grabbed his hand just in time to stop him. "Not in here." James nodded and then smiled.
"Thank you," he said as he fastened the watch to his wrist. "One question  though, how do I turn it back into a watch?" Reasonable question, I thought to myself right as Leo said,
"Good question," he began to explain. "At the bottom of the hilt of both forms there is a knob. You must twist it three times and then it will turn back into a watch." The pride in Leo's voice as he talked about his work made me smile. He was a true inventor.
"Thank you," James said. Leo smiled at him and then looked over at me.
"Now for your gift." The way he looked at me made me feel as if he didn't think he'd ever see me again. I hoped that wouldn't be the case. From behind his back he presented me with a silver charm bracelet. Leo took a few steps so he was right in front of me, he then put the bracelet on my wrist. Examining it closer, I saw that there were already a few charms on it: there was a sword, dagger, tent, and a spear. "I've been working on it ever since you got back from your quest two years ago." Leo said softly. "It was going to be  present fir your 18th birthday but under the circumstances I think it's best that I give it to you now." The thought he had put into the present was amazing.
"How does it work?" I asked him.
"So it to me some time to make it work perfectly," Leo began. "But after some time, I figured it out. By pulling the bracelet off of your wrist, and clutching whatever charm you need, the second the bracelet is off of your wrist it will turn into whatever charm you had been holding. So if you needed to use a sword, you pull the bracelet off of your wrist while holding the sword charm. Does that make sense?" I nodded in agreement so he continued. "I know a tent isn't a weapon but I figured it would be useful for you to always have a way to have shelter with you. Also you don't have to worry about the bracelet breaking; when you pull it off of your wrist the chain does snap but when you turn the weapon back into a bracelet, by using the same method that James will use with his watch, it will transform back like it was brand new." I was speechless. I didn't know what to say so instead I just threw my arms around Leo and tightly hugged him. When I was finally back in control of my emotions, I whispered a quiet,
"Thank you," into his ear. The corner of my eyes were damp with tears; I was overwhelmed with gratitude. When I finally pulled back from the hug, I looked at both Leo and Calypso. "I can't thank the two of you enough for everything that you have done for me and Michael. I know you do not approve of me going on this quest but you are still helping me and for that, I am forever grateful. I am going to do everything in my power so Michael, James, and I make it back safely. I'll find a way to repay the two of you for all you have done when I get back." Calypso shook her head, tears were streaming down her face.
"For you to make it back alive with Michael would be more than enough of a reward for us." Leo nodded at his wife's statement.
"You guys should probably leave soon," Leo said truthfully. "I wouldn't be surprised if Chiron or someone else from camp showed up here looking for the two of you." I gave Leo and Calypso each one more hug, tried to memorize every detail of their faces, and then nodded.
"I love the two of you like you were my own parents," I said truthfully. "No matter what happens, I will always remember the two of you." With that I guided James towards the door. We exited the room, walked down the hall, and left the house. Right before the door could close, I looked over my should and saw Leo and Calypso embracing each other as they watched our departure. I swore to myself that I would find a way to one day repay them for all they had done for me. With a new bracelet on my wrist and a watch on James's wrist, I felt more confident about the challenges that I would soon be facing.
