Chapter 12: Arriving at our destination
By the time I finally saw our destination, the sun was starting to rise. Per request of James, we had taken one short break during the night for sleep. I kept guard for half the time and then he kept guard. (Even though I had insisted that I was fine and didn't need to sleep.) Looking behind me, I saw that James was starting to lag. While I knew that I should be easy on him, after all he didn't have the powers that came with being blessed by Artemis and being a member of her Hunt, I felt little sympathy. He was the one who had insisted on coming with me and if he wanted to stay a part of the quest than he needed to keep up.
"Hurry up slow poke," I shouted. "We're almost there." A burst of renewed energy seemed to shoot through James's body, soon he had almost caught up to me. When we finally got to the driveway, I came to a halt. Turning so I was facing James, I started to speak, "just a heads up, my friends aren't going to be happy to see you. Then again they aren't going to be ecstatic about me being here either." This seemed to catch his attention, he opened his mouth to speak but I wasn't done yet. "There is a high probability that at least to start, they are going to try and convince us that we should go back to camp. But under no circumstances will we agree, understood." James nodded rapidly.
"Why are we here exactly," he asked me. "I mean, why are we visiting these friends of yours if all they're going yo try and do is be mad at us and try to make us go back to camp?" I shrugged. It was a good question but I had no clue how to properly answer it. Ignoring him, I walked up the driveway and to the front door; James reluctantly followed from behind me. I knocked three times. At first I heard nothing so I knocked again. Finally from inside the house, I heard a male voice shouting,
"I'm coming," soon the door swung open and I found myself looking up at a very disgruntled Leo Valdez. A combination of expressions flew across his face when he realized that it was us.
"Leo honey, who's at the door?" Before I knew it, Calypso appeared behind Leo. A look of shock appeared on her face. "Jessica, James, what are you two doing here?" I bit my bottom lip. I was about to respond when Leo cut me off.
"Why in the name of all the gods are you two here?" Leo said loudly. Calypso put a hand on his shoulder. He looked at her and she shook her head at him. He took a deep breath and faced us again. "What I meant to say is, everyone at camp is worried about the two of you. Jessica you know lady Artemis didn't want you to leave camp borders until you turned 18." I looked down at the ground, feeling slightly ashamed.
"Can we come in please?" I asked, still not making eye contact with either of them.
"Of course you can," Calypso said immediately. "If you could just please keep it down though; the kids are still asleep." I looked up and nodded in understanding. "The two of you look absolutely exhausted. Do you want anything to eat or drink?" Calypso was shifting into full mother mode.
"Something to eat would be great," James answered for the both of us. "We haven't had anything to eat since last night before we left camp." I smacked James arm. "What," he muttered. I glared at him but didn't say anything.
I'll go prepare something for the two of you," Calypso addressed us. She looked at her husband, "Leo please take them into the living room; I'll join the three of you shortly." With that she motioned for us to come inside. Leo and her stepped to the side, so James and I could enter the house. When I stepped inside I felt both nervous and at home. I was worried about what their reactions would be but I felt comfortable because this had always been a second home to me. At the sound of the door shutting, I winced. There was no turning back now.
