Chapter 9-The Drive

My heart pounds and I feel panic for the people I just met. The look on Milo's face while looking at his twin brother was heartbreaking enough. I stand by the stairs watching silently not wanting to get in the way. Ruby is clenching her hands turning the knuckles white. If I didn't know any better-which I don't-I'd say she cares for Ollie. But then again, they have be together and probably bonded over their arguing.

Ollie is still a giant wolf, he lays limply in the middle of the living room. The adults run around grabbing things or asking more questions. Ollie breaths normally but it's pretty loud. He has dark brown fur that matches his hair color with dark green eyes that match Milo's. I can see bits of him even as a wolf making him look more human.

Kai and Ezra are still wolves standing outside because it'll get very crowded. Samuel and Dad are kneeling next to Ollie.

"Hazel did you call Leo?" Dad shouts glancing back.

"Yes he's coming as quick as he can!" she calls back running into the living room from the kitchen. I walk into the living room and edge around people towards Kai and Ezra. I slip out outside wincing as my feet touch the freezing cold patio.

Kai looks up at me then back at Ollie with worried eyes. Ezra has a stone face but I can see that he's worried too. Kai keeps moving, like he's unable to keep still. I make a guess that Kai and Ollie are really good friends and that he's panicking. I reach out and touch his side hoping to comfort him. He jumps making his fur bristle and I reel back.

"Sorry," I say quickly lowering my head burning red. Stupid, you're so stupid. You literally just met. He just gave you a tour, he doesn't like you. You're shy and quiet and he's only being nice because your his alpha's daughter. You're an idi-

Suddenly I feel fur brush on my side. I jump and realize Kai has come closer to me. His paws are huge and thump loudly on the floor. He's taller than me because he's six foot, maybe more. He is double dominant, so is Ezra. He's a couple inches taller than me and I go up to his shoulders. His giant, furry head bows low and nudges my leg. I hear him sniffing and he snorts loudly.

I jump and calm my racing heart. His tiny steps are loud and he lifts his head looking over at me. Then he gives me a wolfy grin that makes me laugh. I cover my mouth knowing it's not the time to laugh. I tighten my lips trying to keep myself from laughing. His shoulders shake and he makes a strange coughing/barking sound. He's probably laughing too.

A loud bark sounds from behind me and I scares the daylights out of me. I whip around with fearful eyes only to see Ezra standing there. He cocks his head at me staring at me with those golden brown eyes. Then they narrow and I realize I'm staring at him. I turn around quickly and watch Ollie lay on the floor. Then I notice his shoulder is bent awkwardly and he's not moving.

"Was it bad?" I ask Kai. His side brushes on my shoulder and I can smell him. He smells like wet fur and pine trees. But I also can smell a tint of Axe despite him being a wolf. He nods his giant head watching his friend.

"Will he be okay?" I ask reaching out and touching his side. I feel him breathing loudly, his body is warm. His black fur is wild and sticking up all over the place unlike Ezra who has more calm hair. Kai snorts loudly again looking down at the floor. The adults are talking loudly from inside the house and crowd around Ollie.

Ezra barks a couple times, scaring me once again because it's so loud. Kai glances back at him and barks like he's answering him. Kai looks up at me with his light blue eyes and takes a step back. His paw steps on my bare foot and it covers it completely. I wince because his weight is so much. He reels back and takes a couple steps away from me.

"It's okay," I tell him.

He nods slowly and looks back at Ezra. Ezra rolls his eyes and starts walking to the front of the house. I take a guess, "Are you going to change?" I ask.

He nods a couple times and glances at Milo.

"Don't worry, Dr. Jayal is on his way," I say stepping towards the open glass door. Kai sighs loudly and nods before bolting to the front of the house. Then I see a wolf running up the hill that's unfamiliar. I yelp stumbling back into the house because a giant wolf is barreling towards the house. I run into Mom and point fearfully with panicked eyes.

"Mom wolf! Not ours!" I say quickly.

Mom looks back with worried eyes and then sees the GIANT WOLF COMING TOWARDS US.

"That's Dr. Jayal, don't worry," she says quickly giving me a side hug. The wolf comes into the light of the house and I slowly recognize the doctor. He has golden fur that's wild and in his mouth he carries a back briefcase and a bundle of clothes. He skids to a halt and Dad turns around noticing him.

"Hurry," Dad says urgently and gestures to Ollie. The werewolf doctor nods and runs around the house. Then I see Kai run in as a human, shirtless wearing black sweats. He holds his baggy shirt and yanks it on.

"Ollie hit a tree at full force," he says quickly kneeling down next to Ollie. Milo is next to him and watches his twin mirroring the panicked expression. Ezra walks in fully clothed wearing his black leather jacket again.

"He may have broken his upper arm, and dislocated it. He probably did both or just really dislocated it," Ezra explains. I am shocked because I've never heard him talk. His voice has a French accent that sounds from Quebec, which he is. He runs a hand through his hair making it slick back but still stand up. I hate to admit it, but he looks a bit like a French model.

"Milo explained, don't worry Dr. Jaya-" Mom begins but then I hear the door slam.

"DON'T TOUCH HIM!" I hear a very familiar voice shout. Dr. Jayal runs in wearing a lab coat and jeans but no shirt. He probably forgot that. He drops to his knees next to Oliver who has been eerily quiet the entire time.

"Tell me what happened," the doctor demands opening his briefcase.

"We were out on a run," Kai stammers quickly, "we were going at full speed and he hit a tree at full force. He wouldn't walk and Ezra thinks he dislocated his shoulder or broke it."

"Darn right he did something," Dr. Jayal sarcastically throwing his hands up.

"It's my fault," Milo moans, "I was going too slow and he was probably distracted."

Oliver snorts loudly scaring me and gives his brother a weird look. Then Oliver starts laughing, the half coughing and barking sound. Milo glares at him, "This isn't funny!"

He keeps on laughing, his carefree self shining through. Then Dr. Jayal touches his bent shoulder. Suddenly Oliver whimpers loudly like a dog and growls so loudly that my ribs are vibrating.

"Shut up, you were the one who hit the tree," Dr. Jayal says giving him a pointed look removing his hand. Oliver lowers his gaze looking down at our feet.

"Now change back, I can't see the full damage unless you are a human," the doctor says sternly. That's when Oliver growled again giving the doctor a very dark look.

"Oliver," Erica scolds sharply, "don't you growl at him!"

Oliver gives his mother a cold look then barks a couple times.

"Ollie come on," Mom says in a kind voice, "it's the only way we can help you."

Ollie lowers his head and grimaces as he moves his arm. Then he bows his head and his body begins to change. Before much can even happen he lets out a powerful howl mixed in with a haunting scream. He grits his teeth and whimpers loudly and immediately goes back to being a wolf. I stare at him with wide eyes scared for what happened to his shoulder.

"What's wrong?" Samuel asks quickly with panicked eyes.

"His injury makes it hard for him to change, it's probably broken," Dr. Jayal explains with a concentrated look. Oliver takes deep breaths and gives us all a pleading look that makes me want to crumble to the ground.

"Don't make him change, it's hurting him," I say joining the conversation.

"If it's broken we need to get X-rays which means we need to go to the hospital. He can't go like this, he needs to change," the doctor says giving me a look. I bite my lip unsure of what to do. Ruby kneels next to him, "Come on Ollie, you can do it," she says in a kind voice. Oliver looks over at her surprised.

"Well don't just stand there! Get blankets! Go get a car to we can drive him back down the mountain! If you are just going to stand there gawking you can just leave," Dr. Jayal commands in a stern tone. Dad stands up sharply, "Hunter start the van, who wants to go to the hospital?"

"Me," Erica says standing up.

"I'll go," Mom says with a short nod.

Samuel meets his gaze with a knowing look. Violet and Summer glance at each other then at Dad, "We'll stay, it's too much people going. Rylie stays too," Summer says with a sad tone.

"Okay," Dad says nodding at her then glances down at us, "and you?"

"I want to go," I tell him staying close to Oliver.

"I'm guessing you all are going," Dad guesses and we all nod.

"Great," he mumbles and then looks at the adults who are going, "go now, we'll meet you there."

"Alright let's go, we'll take the truck!" Hazel says backing up. Then the three of them run into another door.

"Where's your dad?" I ask Ruby noticing he's missing.

"Oh, he went back home. Mom doesn't know about all of this so he has to come home as some point. I am normally 'sleeping over' at a friend's house. Mom has always wondered who the friend was and now I got you," she says nudging my arm.

Violet stands up, "Gabriel I have to get home. Layla will be wondering where we are..."

"Go, it's alright. We'll call you and give you the details later," Dad says with a sympathetic gaze. Hunter walks in, "Alright I started the van. Who's driving?"

"I'll drive, Jayal and I will be in there with the kids," Dad says glancing at the us and the doctor.

"We have to get home," Violet says meeting her husband's gaze.

"Right," Hunter says sounding a bit disappointed. He looks at Kai and nods, "You staying the night?"

"Yeah," Kai replies looking up.

"Okay see you in the morning," Violet says and kisses Kai's cheek. He reddens looking reluctant but also glad. Ollie starts laughing again and Kai rolls his eyes at him, "Shut up."

Ollie sticks out his tongue with a wolfish grin plastered on his face. Still Ollie.

"Now come on, you have to change," Ruby says giving him a look. The adults are busy making arrangements for cars and not listening. Oliver winces and shakes his head.

"You have to, come on you know we can't bring you into the hospital as a giant wolf," Kai says giving him a look.

Oliver whines looking away from us. Milo touches his side, "Come on Ollie you have to," he pleads giving his brother a sad look. Oliver takes a deep breath and cringes and his body begins to change. He shuts his eyes and I adjust the blanket over his body. I already feel bonded with everyone, like Oliver is my brother. Like they are my family. My pack. I distract myself from those traitorous thoughts and watch Ollie. He winces and I see fur disappearing.

"Come on, you're doing great," I offer trying to be helpful. His eyes fly open and he screams at the top of his lungs. He howls and it keeps switching into a human scream. I gives me chills but I stay put.

"Just do it Ollie, rip off the band-aid," Ruby encourages with worried eyes. Oliver keeps screaming, he arches his back and violently thrashes his legs. Ezra jumps out of the way, "Come on!" Kai shouts, in a commanding tone but I know he's trying to help. He screams louder and his body begins to shrink. He lets out a guttural scream that enough to haunt my nightmares. He kicks his legs and howls loudly starting to change back into a wolf again.

"Oliver change!" Ezra says sharply. Ollie shakes his head and I see tears filling them, he screams and twists his body.

"No you're almost there! Keep going!" Ruby says panicked because he's going back. Oliver's human scream starts turning back into a wolf's howl that mixed with whimpering.

"NO! Oliver you have to change!" Kai says frantically. We all end up pleading with him to change into a human, even Milo is raising his voice. Oliver stops changing and holds a half form. He is gritting his teeth while shaking his head. Tears stream out of his eyes and he whimpers loudly.

"Oliver Mooncast if you change right now I will let you call me Rudy for a week without complaining," Ruby says quickly and touches his side. Oliver opens one eye still crying as half a wolf and human. His whimpering dies down and he meets her gaze with a serious look.

"I promise," Ruby says with pleading eyes. Oliver gulps loudly and nods at her. Then squeezes his eyes shut and suddenly he changes. He lets out another piercing scream and grips his shoulder as a full human. His face is red with tears staining his face. His screams become staggered and we all congratulate him and tell him it's over.

"You did amazing!" I say feeling strangely proud of him.

He stops screaming and takes deep breaths. He buries his face into the carpet holding his bent shoulder with a shaking hand.

"Good job bud," Kai says lightly patting his back. Ruby scoots closer holding the bundle of rolled up clothes. Oliver sniffles loudly and I can tell he's trying not to cry.

"Good job," Ezra says showing some emotion for once. Maybe they are friends but Ezra isn't loud or showy with it.

"Nice work," Ruby says and touches his other arm. Then Oliver slowly looks up with a red face and gasps for breath. He meets her gaze and manages to smile, "Rudy," he says shakily and coughs loudly from crying. Ruby groans, "What have I done?"

"No complaining," Oliver reminds her starting to calm down.

Ruby has a tight lip staring at him. Oliver's grin only grows and then he tries sitting up. He hisses in pain and stays down. I catch Milo wincing and he rubs his shoulder, "Jeez Ollie you should stop getting hurt," he says in a joking tone.

Oliver looks up at him, "You feel it?"

"Well, I felt the panic so yeah," Milo says nodding looking a bit uncomfortable.

"I heard you almost got caught," Ollie says raising an eyebrow.

"You almost got caught?!" Ruby says sharply looking at Milo.

Milo frowns, "He thought I was a bear. And let me remind you that you almost got us all caught."

Ruby lowers her gaze, "Fine you win."

"Males rule, females drool, alphas reign victorious," Oliver sings in a mocking tone. Kai stifles a laugh and Ruby rolls her eyes. I smile and sit quietly watching, they all this such a tight bond.

"Oh good! He changed," Dr. Jayal says coming back over. Kai adjust the blanket to be covering up everything and I avoid looking down. The doctor studies his bent shoulder with a concentrated expression.

"So... did I break it?" Oliver asks edgily.

The doctor looks up at him slowly, "No, you sprained it," he says, his voice dripping with heavy sarcasm. Oliver looks hopeful for a second but then frowns, "That's mean."

The doctor rolls his eyes, "You want the truth? You probably shattered your upper humorous  and also dislocated it. Congratulations."

"Great," Oliver says defeated.

"We need to get to the hospital," the doctor says standing up again.

"Alright, girls into the car. Someone will have to sit on the floor or in the trunk because there's one too many," Dad says looking worried.

"I'll sit on the floor," Ezra volunteers shortly raising his hand.

"Good, now go," Dad says and meets my gaze. Ruby stands up and starts walking towards the door that the other adults went through. The boys plus Dr. Jayal gather around Oliver trying to get him dressed. Dad hugs me tightly and I embrace him snuggling next to him.

"You don't have to go if you don't want to. I can stay here and take you home-" he begins but I stop him.

"Dad I'm okay," I reassure him hugging him tightly.

"I know this can be too much. I don't want to stress you out," he says quietly smoothing my hair back.

"I'm okay, really. And if anything, I'm bonding with them," I say pulling back meeting his gaze.

"Right," he says lowering his gaze, "but this shouldn't have happened."

"I know, accidents happen all the time," I say shrugging. I touch his jawline smiling at him, "it's not your fault."

"I know, but I wished your first night wouldn't be a trip to the hospital," he says sadly.

"Don't worry, I think it's pretty exciting," I say brightly. He chuckles softly, "Too much excitement."

I laugh and give him another hug, "That's alright."

"Okay, I'll see you in the car," he says with a small smile. I nod and walk out the same door Ruby went through. I come to a large garage with a nice black minivan that's on. The garage door is open letting out the carbon dioxide so we don't suffocate. I open the sliding door and see Ruby sitting in the back corner. The inside is light up with blue lights on the dashboard and the seats are made of black leather. It looks like a luxury minivan, if that's even a thing.

"Come on," she says beckoning me forward. I step in bowing my head down and squeeze between the two seats and into the back where there are three. I sit in the middle knowing Ruby wants me by her.

"So how are you holding up?" she asks me.

"Good," I say with a nod. The door opens again and I see Milo climb in and sit in the second row. Kai comes in from the other way and manages to squeeze past me and sit on my other side. Ezra pokes his head in seeming reluctant like he'll change his mind. But he climbs in and sits in between the two seats, almost on my feet. I had put on shoes before I left so I'm good. Then Dad helps Oliver get in. He sits down in the second row next to Milo.

He is shirtless (because shirts are useless) with a makeshift cast that holds his arm up. It's wrapped around his neck and made of white gauze. He is wearing no shoes or socks so I wonder how we will get inside the hospital. Dad gets in the driver's seat with the doctor riding shotgun. And we pull out of the driveway and we start driving on a less bumpy road than before. It's probably an emergency exit.

"How are you doing?" I ask Oliver. He glances back at me with a smug smile, "Good."

Kai rolls his eyes, "You broke your shoulder."

"I'm lucky to be alive!" Oliver announces proudly. Milo scoffs, "You hit your shoulder, not your head."

"If he did hit his head nothing would happen," Ezra points out. Oliver bursts out laughing and I see Ruby, Kai, and Milo look down at Ezra slowly.

"Ezra does have a sense of humor! Guys this is amazing! Now we know he's not a robot!" Ollie says between laughs and throws his head back.

"And it comes out only when disaster strikes, should we be worried?" Ruby asks raising an eyebrow.

"Probably, but that was pretty funny," Milo says sounding like he's smiling.

Kai chuckles, "Yeah it was."

"So... what did you mean earlier when you felt Oliver's pain, Milo?" I ask him feeling curious. Milo looks back at me, "Huh?"

"You said earlier... you felt his pain and panic," I say starting to get embarrassed.

"Oh he was talking about their twin powers," Kai says in a spooky voice wiggling his fingers.

"Huh?" I ask confused.

"Apparently they can sometimes feel each other's emotions. And pain," Ruby explains crossing her eyes, "I don't believe it."

"You're not a twin," Oliver challenges, "you wouldn't know unless you were one."

"But it's not possible!"

"Werewolves aren't possible Rudy," Oliver says looking back at us, "twin powers aren't much of a surprise."

"True," I agree nodding my head. I look out the window and only see pitch black. I look forward and hear Dad and Dr. Jayal talking quietly. On the clock it reads 9:34.

"So you sleeping here tonight? Skipping school?" Kai asks looking over at me.

I nod, "Yes, but about school I'm not so sure."

"You know you seem very calm, normally you would be changing with every flux of emotion," Ruby points out.

"Yeah, well I'm naturally a calm person. I'm not very wild," I admit shrugging.

"Even Ezra changes at random," Kai says glancing down at him. Ezra looks back at us, his hands on the arm rests, "What?" he asks.

"You still change randomly," Kai tells him. Ezra sighs and nods shortly.

"Maybe you do have the temperament to still go to public school," Ruby wonders out loud. Dad glances back at us, "What?" he asks.

"She's very calm for her first day," Milo relays, "she may be able to go to school."

"No," Dad says sternly staring at the road.

"But Dad I'm not changing like the others. I am very good at keeping my emotions under control," I argue lightly.

"But you can't be perfect," he answers in a hard tone.

"Well maybe I have help," I suggest, "maybe someone goes with me and helps me remember to keep calm."

"Tell me, who?" he challenges. I shrug, "I don't know... someone who is most experienced." I look at everyone trying to figure out who is the oldest werewolf.

"That would be me," Kai says raising his hand, "I changed last year in December."

"Yeah, Kai could go with me," I offer trying to convince him.

"Why not Ruby?" he asks tightly, I can see his silhouette shaking.

"Alpha, with all due respect, you're driving," the doctor says putting a hand on his arm. Dad relaxes and nods shortly.

"It'd be interesting to go back to school," Oliver wonders out loud.

"Pfft I'm never going back," Milo says shaking his head.

"Me either," Ezra says leaning back on my legs. I do my best not to move or act so surprised.

"I'd like to go to school, but I'm too unstable," Ruby says shrugging. Oliver looks back and smiles, "Fiery, but not unstable."

"Get to close and I'll burn you," she threatens him with narrowed eyes. Oliver grins looking completely fine and not in any pain, "Beauty of the flames are worth the feeling of the burn."

We all fall silent and Ruby stares at him gaping. Did he just call her beautiful?

"Very smooth," Ezra says nodding.

Oliver laughs and looks away. Kai joins in and glances over at us girls. Ruby is frozen staring at him. I blink a couple times and place my hands on my lap wondering if Oliver really does like Ruby. They would be a funny couple though, a classic love-hate relationship. Or Oliver is just teasing her out of spite thinking it's funny. Does any of the boys like me? I frown and dismiss that shallow thought.

Boys don't just fall for girls like that. They don't care unless they really do like the girl. And none of the boys have given me any clues. Not that I would know, no boy has ever had a crush on me or asked me out. Stop thinking like a typical teenage girl, you are more mature than that. You don't want to date right now. Boys are stupid. But funny. And cute. And-shut up.

I sigh and remind myself that I'm in a car and I shouldn't get stressed out. I listen to Oliver's playful banter with Ruby smiling and laughing at the jokes Kai adds. Ezra is silent for most of the time but occasionally will say something sassy. Milo is also quiet but I hear him chuckling softly in the background. They seem to know each other so well, their bond is so strong.

I wonder if I can be like that. Maybe I could still go to school and have the bond of the pack. I could be a werewolf who goes to school and still is friends with Haven. But I'd have to lie to her all the time. I don't want to lie to her or keep secrets. She's my best friend. I just wish she was a werewolf too. I don't want to lose this, I'm secretly glad I'm a werewolf now.

I made more friends and I very much enjoy being part of their conversations. Why is life so difficult? Why can't Haven be a werewolf too?
