Chapter 5-The Dinner
The entry is lit by warm lights and there's a fancily decorated rug on the floor. There's a coat room right there filled with shoes and jackets. I stick very close to Mom feeling nervous. We walk out of the entryway and the inside is even more beautiful than the outside. I am standing in a giant living room with a large window that looks out at the front of the house. The living room is decorated in dark colors with large brown leather chesterfields with dark wood.
The carpet is light tan and thin. There's a wooden coffee table in the center of it with coffee cups on it. There are antlers on the wall with nightstands with antler lamps on them. In the back of the room is the kitchen where people stand around talking loudly and laughing while others cook. The ceiling is high and there are dark mahogany wood rafters. You can see the second floor, it creates a balcony where people could peek over.
There are dark wood steps that spiral down from the second floor with no bottom, it's attached to a pole with a single railing. I feel the strong scent of cooking ham and steak that makes my mouth water despite my throwing up. I look around in shock and notice a hall going into a whole other living room. Then I realize there is a boy sitting on a couch next to a lamp reading intensely.
He has a dark blue blanket wrapped around him with his knees pulled to his chest. He wears black sweatpants and no shirt. His arms are muscled and his chest perfectly shaped, it's like he's on steroids but it fits him perfectly. He has a smaller body, despite his muscles. Then I realize becoming a werewolf gives you strength, that probably includes muscles. I glance down at my arms to find the completely normal. Maybe it's just the boys.
He's reading the third Maze Runner, Death Cure. He slowly turns the page completely ignoring me. He has dirty blonde hair that sticks up messily with a cute face. He looks around my age and seems familiar.
"Milo!" Mom calls walking over to the boy. She touches his shoulder and he jumps looking up sharply. His eyes are wide with fear but then he relaxes, "Don't scare me," he mumbles looking upset.
Mom rolls her eyes, "We have a visitor," she tells him and looks over at me. He slowly looks up at me lowering his book. His eyes are dark green like the forest, they relay a cute shyness I've never seen a boy have. All the boys at school are super loud and annoying. He smiles slightly, "Hi, I'm Milo. You must be Brook."
I nod studying him silently. I inhale deeply and suddenly I smell him. My senses overload and I feel a growl rising up my throat. Mom throws me a worried glance, "Brook? Are yo-"
"MINE!" I roar and rush towards him feeling extremely protective and desperate. Milo's eyes widen and he leaps out of the way. I slam into the chair and whip around smelling the air desperately wanting him. Mine. Mine. Mine. He's mine. My own. My mate. I growl and drop down on all fours eyes on Milo.
"Shoot! Gabriel!" Mom shouts standing off to the side. Milo backs away putting his hands up, "Calm down," he says quickly looking around nervously. I see my father run over and I growl stepping towards Milo wanting him. Needing him. He's mine. I claimed him.
"She's a double dominant Milo! She's just- uh claiming you. Don't worry! It's only temporary!" I hear Dad shout to him.
"What do I do?" Milo calls back eyeing me slowly backing away. I step towards him still on all fours, still a human. I quickly step forward and he jumps back with huge eyes.
"Try talking to her," Dad suggests from far away.
Milo nods and takes a deep breath, "Brook... just calm down. We just met and you don't want to claim me. Clear your head," he instructs. I cock my head all the way watching him with wide eyes. He's so beautiful. I need him. I slowly creep towards him sniffing the air drinking in his scent. He stumbles back hitting a table and watches me carefully.
Then I hear the door open and I hear loud shouting. I whip around and growl loudly.
"BOYS!" I hear Mom shout. The talking suddenly stops and I smell more of the male scent. Then I smell a powerful male scent. Full of authority and power, and maleness. I feel a purr escape my lips and I slowly creep forward.
"Don't move," I hear a woman's voice say.
"Brook," I hear Milo say. I look over at him and he plays nervously with his hands, "It's alright. Just calm down. It'll pass."
"Mate..." I purr becoming interested in him again. I stand up and feel another part of my head click. I sway my hips as I saunter up to him. He stays frozen watching me with wide eyes. I can smell his fear scent, it tastes lovely.
"Don't be afraid," I coo touching his neck. His jaw tightens and he stares straight again.
"Mom...?" he says slowly, his voice rising.
"Don't. Move," the same woman's voice answers sternly. I hear him gulp and I touch his chiseled chest. I let my hands slide on his bare chest and giggle softly. His face turns the darkest shade of the red but he doesn't move.
"What's going on?" I hear a soft male voice ask.
"Brook changed today. She's a double dominant so she's doing the same thing you and Ezra did. You claimed Hazel-"
"Don't remind me."
"Anyways, Brook claimed Milo."
"Seriously?" I hear a new male voice ask, on the verge of laughing.
"Yes, but don't go in there. Kai's double dominance will attract her and it won't be good for Milo."
"Why not?"
"She will try killing Milo."
"What?" I hear a flat voice say.
"Well duh, one mate. If she chooses you Kai she will try getting rid of Milo as the result."
I shut out the voices and focus on Milo. I run my hand through his hair and smell his neck getting very close. His entire body is tense and he closes his eyes trying to shut me out.
"Take some charge," I growl into his ear.
"This isn't normal," he tells me in a tight voice.
"Mmmm you smell good," I coo and touch his cheekbones tracing lines down to his jaw.
"Please snap out of it," Milo pleads still shutting his eyes, dark red. "You're nice and all, I think, but this is extremely uncomfortable."
"Open your senses," I suggest sweetly and my mouth brushes over his ear. He shudders leaning his head away from me, "No I won't."
I snap my teeth trying to bite his nose trying to show love. I wrap my around his neck and swing around. He stumbles a bit but forces himself to keep standing. I let myself go limp still holding onto his neck trying to get him on the floor. He strains and tries leaning back, "No, no, no, no-" he says quickly giving me pleading eyes.
I sharply yank down and we collapse to the floor. I grin happily and jump on his stomach like a little kid. He grunts trying to push me off, "Help, me," he says tightly looking over giving Mom a pleading look. She stands there frozen biting her lip glancing at me unsure what to do, "Brook honey... get off him."
"Mate!" I say happily and smack his face lightly. He closes his eyes wincing.
"Helppppp," Milo moans turning his face away from me.
"Mmm," I lean forward face to face with him. I cock my head and trace patterns on his hot face, "Mine, mine, mine," I giggle and snuggle my head on his bare chest.
"Alpha I am so sorry, she's doing this to me," Milo says in an apologetic voice sounding a bit scared.
"That's alright Milo," Dad says from far away.
I close my eyes and wrap my legs around his body and slip my arms under his. I snuggle my head under his chin making myself comfortable. I feel his heart pounding like a hummingbird's. Mate... mine, mine, mine, mine... WAIT.
I jerk upwards and scream stumbling back with bewildered eyes. I point at him and slam into a table, "WHAT, JUST, HAPPENED!?" I scream looking around wildly. My heart races and my face explodes with heat and horror overwhelms me. My stomach twists and I feel my hands shaking.
"Brook!" Mom shouts and finally runs to my side. I see Milo laying limply on the floor staring up at the ceiling, "Oh thank God," he moans rubbing his face.
"OH," I cover my mouth mortified with my actions. Everyone reacts and comes into the living room crowding around. My face burns and I cover my face trying to shut them all out. I just embarrassed myself in front of everyone. I just claimed someone and sat on him.
"No, no, no, no tell me that didn't happen," I moan giving my Mom a pleading look. She winces, "I wish I could."
I groan loudly pulling my legs to my chest, "I'm so sorry Milo," I apologize. I've never been so embarrassed in my entire life. Nothing compares to this. And he was shirtless. My stomach feels heavy and full of regret and embarrassment it almost makes me sick.
"Oh God I'm so sorry," I say burying my head into my Mom's arms.
"That's okay," he says sounding stunned.
"DUDE! She was sitting on you!" I hear a boy's voice shout. I look up slowly peeking through my arms. Standing there is a replica of Milo except with brown hair that looks like it could have been blonde. He has the exact same green eyes wearing bright smile, radiating confidence instead of shyness. He wears no shirt as well with dark jeans with no shoes.
"Go away Ollie," Milo moans sitting up slowly still burning red.
"Oh COME ON! That was the first a girl has come onto you! How do you feel bud?" he asks with a sly smile.
"I feel embarrassed, mortified, and a bit sick," Milo says giving him a look. Then quickly looks over at me looking apologetically, "Uh no offense."
"None taken, I'd feel the same if some weird boy sat me on," I say blushing again giving him a regretful look. He nods and looks back at his copy, "And that wasn't the first time a girl has showed interest in me."
"Mom doesn't count," he taunts and sticks his tongue out at him. Milo's jaw tightens and he stares him down, "I was referring to Grace."
"Oh yeah yeah I'll give you that," he says waving him off. The boy standing next to him laughs, "Yeah whatever. But dude you're so red!"
"Red like the blood that's going to be coming out of your nose if you keep taunting me," Milo says darkly and shoots them a glare.
"Dude, chill," Ollie says giving him a look and puts his hands up.
"Why?" I moan to Mom hiding in her arms.
"Remember what we told you at the house? Being... more like a wolf?" she asks and I nod feeling so much shame.
"I'm sorry, I-I didn't know," I stammer feeling guilty for making Milo suffer through that. Mom pulls back and touches my cheek, "It's okay. We all understand. We know that you have no control over it."
Then she smiles and looks over at the two new boys, "Kai claimed me while he was going through the same thing."
The boy, probably Kai, blushes red and shrinks back looking ashamed, "I didn't know..." he says wincing.
"Exactly! So it's alright, at least your didn't claim your dad. He's got the most dominance so it would make sense for you to... claim him."
"You didn't let him in the room," I say looking at the boy who claimed my mom unwillingly.
"Dude, man up," Ollie says shoving Kai. Kai rolls his eyes and the blush fades away. He straightens up regaining a stance of confidence, "Yeah, I'm a double dominant," he says with a short nod. He rolls his shoulders back showing a dominant stance with a small smirk.
"Milo gets a free pass, if one of you dares to touch her I will personally throw you out of the house," Dad says sharply kneeling down next to me. Ollie and Kai take a step back and Ollie puts his hands up slowly, "We know. Just playing Alpha. We're joking."
"You better be," Dad says putting his arm protectively over me. I bite my lip, "Dad... it's alright... they are playing. You know the boys at school right? Remember Mason?" I ask hugging his arm snuggling close trying to calm him down.
I give him puppy dog eyes and an innocent smile and his gaze softens. "Yeah I remember."
"Boys are just playing," I say soothing him. He closes his and nods, "I'll back down for your sake. But they need to know that-"
"You will rip their throats out if they touch me. Got it. And trust me Dad. I can turn into a giant six foot tall wolf and I'm a double dominant. I can handle myself," I shrug and give him an innocent smile. I hear the adults chuckle softly and I glance over at the boys. Ollie is smirking smugly with his arms crossed. Kai watches me with interested eyes with humor alight in his eyes. Milo stands up slowly rubbing his face ignoring our conversation.
"Okay," he says smoothing my hair back. I slowly stand up and fix my ponytail looking around at the adults. I recognize Samuel and his wife that I vaguely remember, I think her name is Erica. She has brown hair that's tied in a ponytail with grey green eyes. She wears nice clothes and looks a bit stern. She's under Samuel's arm, he's taller than her making it work.
"Alright who wants food!" a woman brightly says, confidence and happiness radiates off her. She has thick golden blonde hair that shines like the sun with golden brown eyes. She's beautiful and has a similar figure to Mom. But Mom looks a bit more French and is slightly taller. This woman looks completely harmless but something about her tells me that she's a werewolf and a tough one at that.
"Great! I'm starving!" Kai says sounding relieved.
"You're always hungry," Milo points out while actually pointing at him.
"Duh, they aren't feeding me enough! Double dominant!" Kai says gesturing to himself puffing out his chest proudly.
"Double the idiot," Milo says rolling his eyes looking up.
"WOO! He got you there Kai! Well done little brother!" Ollie says patting Milo on the back. Milo sighs, "Only by five minutes."
"Still counts!"
"Come on, let's sit down. Where's Ruby?" Mom asks looking around.
"She's upstairs, so is Ezra. I'll get them," Samuel says removing his hand from his wife. Then everyone rushes up to me asking me questions. I smile shyly and nod my head as we herd towards the kitchen. The kitchen has a giant wooden table in the center along with another table across the room. The kitchen is huge with all wooden features for cabinets and counter tops. The floor is hardwood with darker and lighter spots.
Over the second dining room table is a chandelier made of antlers and under the center table are black sticks hanging from the ceiling with cylinder lights at the bottom. The tables are overflowing with food on giant platters all made in massive amounts that could feed an army. Or pack of werewolves. Most of the werewolves are adults which is strange because I've read so much werewolf books where the teenage boys run it.
Guess that's not how reality works. Everyone starts sitting down and I am sat down in between Mom and Dad. The boys sit at the other table with two empty seats. The adults crowd around the center table talking loudly about their day and asking me questions. There are nine adults in total.
"When did it start?" a man asks leaning on the table with curious eyes. He has fiery red hair with bright blue eyes, he wears a park ranger uniform with his badge on and everything. He even wears his gun belt.
"This morning during my first class. I got home before anything happened," I explain feeling a bit shy.
"That's good. I'm Max Tyler by the way. I'm Ruby's father," he says with the tip of his hat.
"I've heard a lot about Ruby," I say managing a smile.
"Yes, she's been the only girl. She's going nuts from being by herself," Max says with a smile.
"I hope you two get along," the woman with the golden hair says as she stirs soup in a large silver pot. I smile back and nod not saying anything.
"I'm Summer by the way! I'm Ezra's mom," she adds sweetly. A man gets up and walks behind her putting his arms around her, "Mmm that smells lovely," he says in a very deep voice.
"Why thank you!" she says looking over her shoulder at him. Then kisses his cheek. I guess he's Ezra's father. He has a large build with thick muscles and is huge compared to Summer. He has brown hair with curved brown eyes with a chiseled jaw. He looks so powerful, and matches the perfect description of werewolf.
"That's Rylie, he's a lawyer and one of your dad's oldest friends," Mom explains leaning over to me.
I nod feeling a bit overwhelmed with names and backstories. Another man with black hair and light blue eyes that looks like Kai holds out his hand for me, "I'm Hunter Everscene, I'm Kai's father," he says with a proud look. He wears a light blue dress shirt with black slacks, much like the police uniform. Man werewolves really are everywhere.
"This is my wife Violet," he says gesturing to the woman next to him. She looks over and smiles shyly, "Hello," she says with a faint accent. She has thick, curly dark brown hair with huge brown eyes, her skin is darker than everyone else's.
"She's from Venezuela! She moved up here with her pack in Bookerville to get a taste of Canada. And we met when I pulled her over for speeding," Hunter says smugly.
"I wasn't speeding," she retorts lightly, "I was simply ignoring traffic laws which apparently other countries have."
"I love you," he says sweetly and ruffles her hair. She bats him away with a shy smile, "Diablo," she says rolling her eyes.
"Chupacabra," he argues mimicking her accent. I laugh smiling at their playful banter. Then Samuel comes back with two people following him. First, a teenage boy with brown hair and golden brown eyes that seem so deep. I am stunned by his looks, he wears a black leather jacket with dark jeans. But then I realize his expression isn't cheerful, instead it's solemn and moody. That's Ezra. He has a slight tan and looks a bit annoyed. He sits down at the other table and stares at the table.
I remember Mom telling me to give him a chance but in all honesty he looks like a moody, rebellious teenage boy who has no regard for anyone. But hot. I hate to admit it though. I notice Kai playing with his fork with a smirk that looks so natural on him. He has light skin unlike his mom with the Spanish tan. He wears a tight black shirt showing off all his muscles still radiating confidence. So it wasn't some act to be cool.
My eyes wander back to Ezra noting he's not talking to anyone. But Ezra doesn't look shy like Milo. He has this cool feel around him, no one touches him. He seems sharp and rude but every part of my YA novel head screams misunderstood and sweet. I realize there was another girl who walked in who looks around my age. She has blazing red hair with streaks of blonde with grey blue eyes. She has pale skin and looks like a fiery person. She brightens at the sight of me, "OH THANK GOD!" she says sounding extremely relieved.
"Another girl!" she says rushing over, "I'm Ruby, you must be Brook," she says smiling brightly.
"Yep," I say with a short nod.
"Come on, sit with me. It's been forever since I've had a girl to talk to," Ruby says flipping her hair sharply. I glance at Mom and she nods at me, "Go sit with the others."
She grabs my wrist and pulls me up out of my chair. I am surprised she grabbed me and then she drags me over to the table.
"Hey Rudy," Ollie says smugly crossing his arms on the table.
"It's Ruby idiot," she says rolling her eyes. I get the feeling she's very confident and driven with the dramatic flair of fire. It minds me of a model attitude. "Now move," she says giving him a sharp look.
"Oh come now Rudy. That's no way to treat me in front of the guest," Ollie says leaning back looking up at her. She rolls her eyes and smacks him upside the head, hard. He only grins at her.
She groans annoyed looking up at the ceiling, "Get. Up."
"Hmm no."
"I will take your chair," Ruby says pointing at him with a threatening gaze.
"Try," Ollie taunts and sticks his tongue out at her.
Ruby grabs the chair tightly tensing but does nothing. Ollie smiles and cocks his head at me, "I won't move for you. But I'll move for Miss. Brook."
"Why?" I ask playing with a lock of my hair.
"Alpha's daughter. And you are nice. Plus you made my twin go darker than when he changed in front of EVERYONE. Butt naked! You should've seen him! It was-"
"TERRIBLE," Milo interrupts loudly looking up from his book. He glances at me, "Ignore everything my brother says. He's an idiot."
"Show the love guys," Ollie says putting his arms out.
I stifle a laugh and look over at Kai. He grins at me and winks, "I'll give her my seat," he says standing up. Then he pulls it out and bows to me. I stiffen with wide eyes shocked, "Uhh that's okay-"
"Hey!" Ollie says sharply throwing him a glare, "I offered first!"
"You snooze you lose," Kai says smugly, "plus I'm right next to Ruby anyways.
"That's not how that works!" Ollie protests smacking Kai frowning at him.
I weakly smile, "It's alright I can just pull my chair from the adult table..." I gesture back to the adult table.
"Oh," Kai says looking a bit hurt. His shoulders slightly droop and his grip on the chair slacks.
My heart squeezes and I bite my lip hoping I didn't offend him. So instead I say this, "But I can use your chair if you'd like..."
"Yes!" he says a bit too loud, seeming too eager. Ruby rolls her eyes, "You guys are so full of it. You act like you've never seen a girl before."
"Pfft we have. We just don't like you," Ollie jokes with a playful grin. Ruby gasps and smacks him again. Ollie looks happy about it and mouths to me, she loves me. I giggle and sit down in Kai's chair. He pushes me in and I can't help but to blush. Kai grabs the other chair and sits down next to Ollie on my other side. Ezra watches everyone bored with the conversation. Milo is absorbed in his book once again.
"So tell me everything. What's it like being a double dominant girl?" Ruby asks putting her hands on the table giving me her full attention.
"Well... I didn't know about any of this so it was a shock. I start throwing up at school but I got home before anything happened. Then I felt very sick and I started getting pains... then Dr. Jayal came right when I transformed for the first time," I explain moving my hands around.
"And?" Kai asks curiously. They all look at me with interested expressions, even Ezra. Or he's just staring off in my direction ignoring me.
"Well I kinda panicked..." I say with a wry smile, "I kinda screamed a ton and then broke our glass back door trying to run."
"Nice," Ollie says nodding seeming impressed.
"I broke a ton of things too," Kai says proudly, "Even knocked down a tree or two," he says sounding cocky.
"I rammed my head through the glass," I say nodding remembering it vividly.
"Ouch, then what?" Ruby asks excitedly.
"Well I ran out and my dad turned into a wolf trying to cut me off. I stared at him for a while not registering it and when I did I started running. I ran into the forest and then changed again..."
"I hate how we don't have clothes when we change. It's so awkward," Ruby says looking up at ceiling.
"Funny too," Ollie points out with a smug look, glancing at Milo. Milo rolls his eyes at his twin brother.
"For boys it's not the same. You are fine with being shirtless, girls? Not so much," Ruby comments shaking her head.
"Agreed, I tried hiding in a bush," I say wincing.
"I know! Bushes hurt!" Ruby says agreeing wholeheartedly with me.
"Attention everyone!" I hear Dad say, his voice rings clear and full of authority. His alpha voice. Everyone looks up at him waiting for his announcement. "First, please welcome our new member Brooklyn! As you know she just changed today and treat her with every kindness showing her the wonderful things of being part of our pack, our family," he says looking me with shining eyes. I smile back but also feeling shy from all the other eyes watching me.
Kai starts clapping and hoots loudly, everyone joins in immediately clapping for me. I laugh looking around feeling a bit excited about this. Part of me wants to accept being a werewolf with them. But I force myself to remember I have to stay human and separate. But being part of the pack means my family grows and more friends. But I'll lose my best friend. All or nothing.
"Alright alright settle down," Dad says putting his hands out. Everyone quiets down and awaits his next announcement.
"Bow your heads," he says with a short nod. Everyone in sync bows their head and I do the same folding my hands. "Let God bless this wonderful meal and let us remain as family. Let him provide us protection and strength and watch over us. In His name, amen," Dad finishes before sitting down. Everyone nods and sits in silence for a couple seconds.
"And let the feast begin!" Dad announces loudly with a wide smile. Suddenly it turns into a mad dash for food. The boys start grabbing chicken legs arguing for the biggest piece. The adults erupt in loud conversation and I hear the clinking of utensils.
Ruby nudges me, "Come on before they eat it all!" she says grabbing a large spoon for mashed potatoes.
I smile and nod quickly grabbing two fresh, hot rolls. As I pile up my plate I start to wonder if being a werewolf isn't all that bad.
