Leo: Part five
V
Leo
Leo was so confused. Which wrench was his wrench? He knew he had put it on the table in Bunker Nine, but there were so many of his half siblings there, he just didn't know if it was his wrench or someone else's. He was also confused about the whole problem with Gabby. First, she was asking if he liked Ana as a crush and now she was completely blocking out everyone. Not only that, but his heart ached for Calypso with each passing second, but… it seemed as if his heart also ached for someone else…
“Hey man, here’s your wrench,” Josh (one of his other half siblings) said, interrupting his thoughts.
“Yeah, thanks,” Leo replied. He remembered the hologram and stepped back when he realized Calypso was wearing a necklace. A crystal necklace. Since Leo’s machine wasn’t working to find Ogygia with the crystal he already had, maybe it would work to find Calypso herself! His mind filled with excitement, he may have found a way to find her! Leo’s heart sank again. There was one problem. He would need a quest for that. Leo thought about Percy and Annabeth leaving camp once on a forbidden quest, and thought, why can’t he do that? He walked out of Bunker Nine and headed towards Cabin Eight. He halted, thinking about Gabby’s negative state and that maybe he should talk to her first this time. As he walked towards the Apollo Cabin, he thought about bringing Gabby and Ana along with him because he trusted them completely and smiled at how great it would be for his new friends to meet her, but he also wanted Jason, Piper, Nico, Frank, and Hazel along with him of course.
He knocked on the door to the Apollo Cabin and Piper answered.
“Hi Leo, what’s up?” she asked.
“Hey beauty-queen.” he answered. “Is Gabby there?” Piper looked at him quizzically and nodded.
“She isn’t really in the state to talk to anyone...” she said, but Leo kept waiting to be let in. He had to tell someone, Gabby and Piper were perfect to tell first.
“This is important Pipes,” he insisted. Piper studied his face, almost looking for some joke in his eyes, but he stood firm with a straight face. She let him in and he saw Gabby’s eyes red and puffy, as if she’d been crying for hours.
“Hey, Gabby, are you alright?” Leo asked walking up towards her. Gabby sniffed and straightened up, noticing Leo’s arrival.
“Yeah, yeah I’m ok. What brings you here?” Leo was slightly taken aback by the sudden acceptance, but continued his request.
“I wanna tell you guys something. You know how Calypso is missing and all that? Well, during capture the flag, there was this hologram of her, saying that I would know where she was. I’ve been trying to work the device from which the hologram was projected from and nothing has worked. So, I’m thinking...of going on a quest to this place I know.” Piper furrowed her eyebrows.
“Leo, there wasn’t any news of a hologram of Calypso. If there was, we’d probably all have heard about it by now,” Piper replied. Gabby wiped away the tears that had streamed her cheeks.
“Actually, I saw the hologram myself,” Gabby piped up.
“Leo, what did you do to Gabby?”
“What? Nothing.”
“Oh c’mon, did you invent something that alters her actions or something?”
“Nah, if I did, I would’ve gone back to my third grade teacher asked for my stuffed bunny back,” Leo replied.
“Ok, well, ask Chiron if we could go on the quest,” suggested Gabby, suddenly herself again.
“Uh, that’s the catch...we can’t,”admitted Leo, fidgeting.
“LEO VALDEZ! HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND?! You’re gonna go on a quest without telling Chiron just because of a hallucination?!” screamed Piper. Just then, Jason walked in.
“Oh hey, Piper, I was looking all over for you! And in case you didn’t realize, this isn’t the first time Leo’s gone crazy,” Jason replied.
“Hey!”
“But seriously man, are you okay?” Jason asked. “I mean, I know you miss Calypso and all, but-”
“I’m not hallucinating! I saw it with my own two eyes!” Leo yelled. With that, Leo stormed out of the Apollo cabin. How could his own friends not believe him? They fought together, ate together, did back handsprings together, and yet wouldn’t believe that he was very much sane.
“So, where’s the quest to?” asked a familiar voice beside him. Leo had been so wrapped up in his thoughts so much so that he didn’t realize Gabby walking alongside him. “You know where this place you’re supposed to know is, right?” Leo pained out a sigh. He knew exactly where it was. He knew the place with his eyes closed. He could remember it like it was yesterday.
“Yeah...Calypso’s at my old house...where my mother died.”
…
Later that evening, Leo walked up to the Hades cabin and knocked softly and heard rustling inside. Nico eventually opened the door in his new Camp Half Blood t-shirt and black jeans. Bags hung underneath his eyes and his skin was still somewhat pale, but compared to the trip on the Argo II, he was looking pretty good.
“Hey Nico, I was wondering if you and Hazel could-”
“Go on a forbidden quest to save Calypso? Yeah, we heard. Sorry bout’ the hallucinations you’re having, but Hazel said you should go see a therapist or something if they get worse.”
“What about Frank, do you know?” Leo asked, hopeful.
“Well, Frank does whatever Hazel does, so I’d say your chances are pretty slim,” he replied. Leo’s heart sank. So, now everyone thinks he’s a nut case. Perfect.
“Well, I need some sleep from shadow traveling from California to pick up some stuff,” Nico said and slammed the door in Leo’s face. Leo did a mental cross through Hazel’s, Frank’s, and Nico’s names. Well, at least there was the daughter of Poseidon left, Leo thought to himself.
He saw Ana trying to contain herself in a serious face, holding a bronze sword. She was slicing the dummies to bits, and he was cautious of approaching her. Her technique reminded him of Percy, and he wondered if he would believe him. He shook his head and walked up the stairs, hoping she would not cut him into pieces. She turned around and almost sliced his head off and stopped a couple inches from his face.
“Hey Ana!” Leo exclaimed, his voice cracking.
“Hi,” Ana replied as she sliced the last dummy’s head off. “What’s up?”
“Okayyyy, well, you know the hologram we saw show Calypso? I want to go on a quest to find her.” He looked down and heard Ana sheathing her sword.
“Yeah, I remember the hologram. When do we leave?” she said, looking straight at him. He looked at her, dumbfounded that she accepted so easily, but he was pleased to have two friends that would help him.
“Oh, I’m not sure. Honestly, I didn’t think I’d get this far. Chiron won’t actually let us go...”
“Ok, well, we can start gradually getting supplies, so it isn’t obvious we are leaving without permission,” she said. “Wait.”
“What?” he asked, puzzled.
“Gabby. Is Gabby coming?” she asked, with a pained face.
“Yes, why? What is going on with you two?” he replied.
“I don’t know. I’m glad she’s coming, that way I might be able to talk to her.”
“Oh,” he said, if impossibly even more confused. So, she doesn’t even know why Gabby is sad? Leo thought she already found out, considering she looks guilty at the sound of her name. Leo then, got an idea. He grinned, and told Ana he’d see her later at the bonfire. He ran off towards where Gabby was.
“Hey Gabbs, no time to explain, meet me at the bonfire after most of the people left.” She looked at him oddly, then her face turned red. She agreed, and he ran off again, this time to Bunker Nine. He got to work, and he kept working until the horn blew for dinner. Satisfied with his work, he went to dinner.
...
Leo found Gabby at the bonfire right when he asked her.
“Gabby, glad you could make it-”
“What is she doinghere?” Gabby asked out of pure disgust as Ana made her way towards them.
“Well-” He started, but got interrupted again by Gabby starting to walk away. He grabbed her hand and pulled her back to where she was. Flustered, she stayed in one spot and crossed her arms. Ana looked pained, like her heart broke into pieces. Surprising both of them, he took each of their hands and slipped a bracelet on each. Gabby’s had a music note on it and Ana’s had a trident. When he let go of their hands, they were pulled towards each other by an invisible force. Leo smiled at his handy work.
“I powered these bracelets to stick together by the feeling of hate or contempt. They won’t separate until they feel love and happiness between you two.” Gabby looked at him with a deadly stare, and Ana looked at him gratefully.
“WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU LEO VALDEZ?” screamed Gabby, shocking Ana.
“Yeah, I tend to get that a lot,” Leo replied, grinning.
“Gabby, please,” Ana begged, starting to get tears in her eyes. Gabby looked away, anger pulling the ‘cuffs’ tighter. In surprise, Ana yelped.
“Oh, and I forgot, one gets tighter if one of you gets angrier towards the other person, you’ll hurt that other person,” he said, getting two death stares this time.
“Leo, I understand that you’re just trying to help, but this becoming ridiculous,” Ana replied. Gabby agreed, nodding her head.
“Well, you’re argument is ridiculous, so it’s a perfect match!” he exclaimed happily. “Anyway, got the supplies?” Angrily, both Ana and Gabby moaned a “yes.”
“Perfect! Now let’s start the quest!” Leo announced full of mirth. However, Gabby and Ana merely stared at Leo with contempt, pulling the ‘cuffs’ tighter.
