District 10 - female tribute - Maeve

I know that there's only one other tribute left. After I counted the faces in the sky I heard three more cannons, marking the twentieth, twenty-first, and twenty-second

Those cannons should be music to my ears, but I don't want anyone to die.

I knew as soon as my name was called at the reaping that I would be surrounded but death, but I never realized I would feel this bad about it, I didn't even have a part in any of their deaths.

Even though twenty two people have died, I can't do anything about it, so I just have to keep moving on.

At the beginning I didn't know what to do. I decided not to go to the cornucopia, I didn't want to touch any weapons and I didn't see much use to any of the other supplies so I just ran into the forest.

After a mile or so I started walking and only stopped when it got too dark to continue. I slept at the base of a tree and I woke up at sunrise.

No one ever considers how boring the games are. I mean, by now I should have run into some sort of obstacle, a mutt, another tribute, something. I'm almost looking for one, even though it'll probably kill me, at least I'd die of something besides boredom.

Finally, I find what I've been searching for. There's a bunny near a bush a little ways away.

The bunny has floppy ears and long, yellow fur, so yellow it looks almost unnatural.

I'm so excited to see something that isn't a tree that I decide to try and pet the bunny.

I walk over slowly, trying my best not to scare it away, but it doesn't seem scared of me, it doesn't even seem to notice me. The little rabbit just continues staring in another direction, sitting completely still.

When I'm about two feet away, I kneel on the ground and put my hand out. I was kind of expecting it to run away, look at me, even just twitch its nose, but it still just sits there.

Against my better judgement, I reach out to stroke the rabbits smooth, golden coat.

Just before I touch the small bunny, it grows five times its size. Suddenly, the bunny is taller than me and its silky, yellow fur and cool, blue eyes are replaced with matted, grey fur and harsh, red eyes. It's teeth are now long and pointy and its little paws have long nails.

I barely have enough time to recognize the fact that the bunny is actually a mutt before its fangs sink into my neck.

The mutt takes its teeth out of my throat and lets me fall to the ground.

Out of the corner of my eye, I can see the mutt turning back into its cute facade. It shrinks down to its normal size, and its matted fur magically untangles and changes color.

As the small bunny hops away, I swear I see it smile at me.
