Chapter 18: Claudius Templesmith's Announcement
I killed someone. I killed someone. I'm still shocked. I turn over the boys body and retrieve his pack before the hovercraft takes his body. Then I come back to Noah. No! Why did you have to die!
"Noah," I sob over his corpse. "No, no!"
I bite my shirt to muffle my cries. Someone could come kill me right now. I'm crying and crying, then I hear someone behind me. I turn around and aim the spear in that direction. but put it down when I realize it's just Rue. She is scared.
"Oh, it's just you," I say in relief.
"Oh Prim! What happened!" Rue exclaims while staring at Noah's corpse.
"I don't know! There was Marvel, and...and he speared Noah. I was so mad, I...I killed him! Both of them were innocent, Noah and that...other guy. They didn't have to die," I sob.
"Oh Prim...I'm so sorry," Rue says and pulls me into a tight hug.
And for a few minutes, we don't watch out for the careers or anything, I sob and Rue comforts me.
"Well...we've got to move on," Rue says.
"Yeah...we do. Both literally and figuratively."
"Let's go, we're going to need water. Especially you, you would have lost lots of water in those tears."
I nod, wiping my tears. For a second my hand lingers on my cheek and the waterworks almost start again. I control myself though, and take out Bunny. I cuddle him for a moment. His fur is soft, and is the color of snow. I let him down, so he can lead us to water. We follow him as we eat our shoe food, and as always, he leads us to the right place. This time it's a small pond. I drink a lot of water and also wash my face, dried in tears. After that, we decide to go through what we have.
"Two rabbits."
"Nuts, berries, and other food."
"A spear."
"A tin of ointment."
"One slingshot."
"Some pebbles,"
"Marvel's pack."
"Done, nothing else."
"Well I guess we are going to have to go find more food, like food food. Not nuts and berries," I say.
"And we should make another slingshot, just in case. We still have the laces from Noah's shoes," Rue offers.
"Ok, then let's split the work. I'll make a slingshot. You can take the spear, and the slingshot we already have, to go look for more groosling or other food."
"Good plan, but we won't be able to cook anything."
"Okay, then what do you suggest?"
"Those eggs we ate last time, they can fill us up. We have the nuts and stuff anyways."
"Ok, then first let's make one more slingshot, maybe collect a few more stones, then let the bunnies take us to the stream and hope we find more eggs."
"Sounds like a plan."
By nightfall, we were able to accomplish all of our goals.
"It's been a good day," Rue says. I shrug.
"I wish Noah didn't have to die," I say.
"That would have made it an even better day," Rue agrees.
"Yup..."
"But we did do many things. We destroyed their food, we killed one of the careers, well you did, and we had good food, drank water, and washed too. Won't you say it's a good day?"
"Yeah, it's a good day,"
We stare at the sky which is now dark. Rue and I sit there for a few minutes, in silence. Then something falls down from the sky. It's a silver parachute.
"Sponsors," Rue whispers as the parachute lands in her lap. This gift was meant for her.
"I wonder what's inside," Rue wonders.
"Go on, open it," I say with a smile. I am happy for her, it's her very first sponsor gift. I sure was happy when I got mind; that tin of ointment was priceless to me.
Rue nods and opens up the parachute. Inside is a loaf of bread. It's not the fluffy white stuff from the Capitol, but is darker, has some seeds and in a crescent shape.
"From District 11," Rue whispers. She breaks the bread into two and hands me one.
"Here, you deserve it," Rue says.
"Thank you," I say as I take the bread. It's warm. Rue and I both take a bite out of the bread, and before we know it, we are finished.
"Thank you sponsors," Rue says as she looks up into the sky. Just then the Capitol logo comes up. Then the faces. Marvel, who I killed, Noah, and then the District 10 boy. The cannon we heard in the morning. It must have been him.
"How many left?" Rue asks.
"I don't know. Cato, Clove, Jacqueline, You, me, Thresh, and Peeta," I say thoughtfully.
"That makes seven," Rue says. I nod.
"That also means seventeen dead," I say, thinking of Noah. I feel the tears coming again but hold them back, like I did before. Rue and I gather leaves and find a good place to sleep, well hidden from view. I fall asleep quickly. It's been a rather long day.
"Prim!" Noah exclaims and runs towards me.
"Noah!" I answer back. He reaches me and lifts me up.
"I missed you," I tell him.
"Me too," he smiles. He pulls me into a tight hug.
"We're going to win," he assures me.
"Of course," I answer and giggle. Then we follow Bunny to the stream.
Noah puts his hand into the water and then splashes water at me.
"Hey!" I squeal and splash water back at him. Then we're playing in the water. We wade through and no one bothers us. Not one of the other tributes, not the gamemakers, not the animals in the arena. Nothing bothers us.
Noah and I sit beside the stream and eat nuts and berries. I hold Bunny in my hand and pet her softly. The sun starts to set and I shiver. It's getting cold.
"You cold?" Noah asks.
"I'm fine," I tell him, but then sneeze.
"You are totally not okay," he says and takes off his jacket and puts it on my shoulders.
"No! What about you?" I worry.
"No I'm fine, you're not. You need the jacket."
"Prim. Wake up." It's Rue. I'm awake. I realize it was all a dream. I sigh. I stand up and I walk over to Rue. She has the Marvel's pack in her hand and she's opening it up.
"You're finally awake," she tells me.
"Unfortunately," I mutter under my breath. Then I add brightly, "So, what are you doing?"
"I'm going to see what he has in his pack, there could be useful stuff in here," Rue says.
"Let's do it together."
"Sure."
We take out the items in the pack as we name them.
"Four knives."
"Two spearheads."
"One flashlight."
"A small leather pouch."
"First aid kit!"
"Bottle of water."
"Full bottle of water."
"Sure, why not. Full bottle of water."
"A packet of dried fruit."
"Okay done...this dude had some pretty useful stuff!"
"He sure did! Now let's split it up."
Rue and I spend the next few minutes splitting up the supplies into our individual shoes. It's not exactly half-half but it's pretty even. Two knives each, a spear head, and we split the packet of dried fruit, I have the packet and Rue has the other half, which we put in the leather pouch. We keep the first aid kit, water, and flashlight in the pack.
"Ok, let's go get more food now," Rue says.
"Sure," I reply and we go hunting. Just like when we caught grooslings. Except this time we go together. Rue uses the slingshot, I stab with the spear. We only catch two; it's not like we are starving. We had to light a fire which was risky, but we cooked without getting caught. Then we heard some rustling. We turn around to face where the sound came from. t's Jacqueline. The three of us just stare at each other with round eyes but we don't attack each other. The girl has a pack but doesn't seem to have any weapons. We just all stare at each other for what seems like a ridiculously long time.
"Run away," Rue finally tells her, and the girl does.
"That was scary," I tell Rue. "Like what if it was Cato or Clove?"
"That would have been super scary. Now before they find us let's get away," Rue says. We don't bother to extinguish the fire, we'll be going away anyways. We walk and walk, and we don't even know where we are going. We walk until the sun sets. There are a lot of bushes so we make a temporary hiding place. We sit under the bushes and eat the groosling. One each. I never knew I could eat so much but I guess I was hungry. We keep eating even as the Capitol logo shows up in the sky and the anthem plays. There were no deaths tonight.
After finishing the groosling, we each take a small sip of water from the bottle and decide to sleep.
"Goodnight Prim."
"Goodnight Rue."
The next morning, I wake up to the sound of trumpets.
"They must be calling us for the feast," Rue whispers.
But she was wrong.
"Congratulations to the final seven tributes!"
It's Claudius Templesmith.
"I am here to tell you that there has been a slight rule change!"
Rule change? I better listen, I have no idea what he's going to say.
"Two tributes of the same district may both be crowned victors if they are the last ones standing! That is all, good luck!"
Then there is the trumpet sound again.
"Thresh!" Rue exclaims. At the same time, I gasp.
"Peeta."
End of Part 2, <The Games>
~A/N~ Do you think Rue and Prim's alliances will be broken? Will they walk away from each other to find their district partner? Well at this point, all the tributes but Jacqueline have their district partner. Cato and Clove will be a huge threat...what will Prim do?
