Chapter Twenty-two
"W-What?!" Angelique's eyes shot up in surprise. "You want to..."
"Mm. We want to sing it," Ange reaffirmed. His eyes were completely honest. He didn't want to give up on his sister's music. This song... the song Angelique was creating had captured his heart. Sure, he might not be as excellent as Robin and Eve when it came to reading musical notes but even he could decipher amazing music; all thanks to Guiltia teaching him.
Taking a deep breath, Angelique composed herself from the unexpected declaration. I didn't expect them to like it to the extent of wanting to sing this. I remember Guil-san also liking this song....
"But it's not complete...." She hadn't tried to compose in a long time. Since Guiltia's untimed slumber, she didn't even touch the piano because she had shut her feelings for the man and music. Frankly, the thought of music frightened her. It will bring up unnecessary memories of their happy moments. She was afraid of the heartache that would follow.
Then, will she give up on music? Will she give up on her dream? Will she be a coward and run away from the harsh path? These thoughts swirled inside her.
"We'll wait for you to finish it," Eve softly spoke.
"Even if you're done with it at the last moment, we will still sing it," Robin urged. All of them were aware of the drift between the girl and music. That's why they were ready to give her all the time she needed.
Honestly, these sheets had always been confined in the corner of her bag. She didn't have the courage to finish the song. Neither did she have the heart to completely push music away.
....I'm such a coward and indecisive. I can never come to a conclusion and heartily accept it. Internally, she let out a self-deprecating laugh.
Just then, Guiltia's voice rang out inside her head. She recalled his song and unconsciously clenched her jaws. ....But I've decided to move forward. . . I want to change and become a stronger person. In order to do that, perhaps, the first step I need to take is...
"....Do you really want to sing this song?" She asked back.
"Mm." Ange nodded. This song had a strange power over them. It was as if the song was screaming to be sung by them. 'Angelist'- a song that connected Angelique and Guiltia. Maybe the song wanted to connect with Ange, Robin and Eve too.
For a moment, she closed her eyes. When she opened them again, her grey eyes shone with determination and firmness. She nodded back. "Alright. I'll.... try my hardest."
I won't let Guil-san down. I'll show him that the effort and time he took to teach me was definitely worth it. She silently promised this to herself. This may be my last chance to have him sing my song.
. . . . . . .
Excited murmurs erupted from the audiences. Their favourite unit was holding a live after so long. They couldn't wait to see their beloved singers on the stage once again. The same could be said regarding the fans of Eclipse and Lost Eden; as those two groups were holding a live that night as well.
The masses in Yoyogi arena switched their penlights to blue, the colour of the sky. This resembled their support for the four-membered group. While the fans awaited the arrival of OZ, the air backstage was solemn.
OZ was done with changing into their outfits and their makeup. Yet all of them simply stood there, concentrating. Stage jitters were getting to them but they wouldn't let it beat them. OZ will give the best performance and win the Visual Prison. They will aim for victory, just as Guiltia would have.
"....I'll head back to my seat now." Angelique spoke slowly, not intending to disturb them. There wasn't much time left for them to take the stage.
"Sure." Ange smiled and stepped towards her. He took her hand in his. Angelique could feel his emotions surging inside her. Twins had a way of conversing without words.
Gently smiling, she patted his head, softly, since she didn't want to ruin his makeover. "You've practised hard for today. Besides, Guil-san will be singing with you. You'll do just fine."
"Mm..." He nodded and took a deep breath. "I'm not alone."
The angelic smile he flashed her was breathtaking. "We'll sing your song perfectly."
Releasing her hand, the leader of OZ brought his hand near his chest. The mark of OZ, bestowed on him by the Scarlet Moon, glowed vibrantly. "I wonder if it reached Guil."
Eve nodded. "The music inside us must've reached him through our bond."
Robin chirped. "I'm sure Guil-san totally loves this song."
Hearing their words made Angelique happy. "I look forward to hearing you sing it."
The three vampires seemed to perk up. The eldest mumbled, "It has started...the prison..."
"Yeah." The pinkette nodded.
True, the Scarlet Moon had used its powers to create a prison that only the vampires could feel. Humans like her could never sense it. The battle was starting and she would cheer them head-on.
Before she proceeded to head back, she beamed at them. "Best of luck guys!"
The spotlight fell on the three members of OZ standing on the stage. Though the fans were confused at the lack of the hottest member, they focused on their performance.
"Under this sky without even a single glimmer of light..." Eve started.
"I was searching for stars that could never be seen," joined Robin.
Ange spoke Guiltia's lines, who was sleeping in the coffin behind him. "I sit in this prison of eternity and cruelty." He continued with his own lines, "But I knew for sure that hope was out there."
Ange stretched out his hand towards the seating audience. "Let us play...our finale!"
Thus, OZ created their own prison.
. . . . . . .
Inside the prison of blue sky and blooming roses stood four vampires. The mystical moment would never be felt by humans and they will continue to remain oblivious to it.
The youngest breathed heavily. Pouring his everything into their last song had left him panting. He turned to Guiltia, standing behind him.
"We've won." Guiltia confirmed, a satisfied smile on his face.
Hearing that made a huge smile stretch across Ange's face. His cheeks got dusted with tints of red out of sheer happiness. Their song, their music turned out to be the best. It had been conveyed to people.
"We won..." Eve mumbled the words to himself since it felt surreal. He had never imagined himself winning in the centuries old festival.
"Unbelievable..." Beside him, Robin whispered in English.
"Eve. Robin." Guiltia turned to his two other comrades. "This was the best performance ever. I thank you."
"Yes!" The two nodded.
Guiltia's eyes turned soft while he looked at the three of them. "Angelique surpassed my expectations as well. She has created a wonderful song."
They won with the song created by a girl who cried easily and was unbelievably warm. This song connected them. It was as if he could feel the emotions residing in her heart. Looks like he didn't need to be worried for her anymore. She was already walking down her own path.
"I wish I could tell her this..." He smiled to himself before looking into Ange's eyes. His expression turned firm. "However, she has a kind and devoted heart, making her prone to be hurt easily. Please take care of her, everyone." He requested Ange, Robin and Eve.
"Of course." Eve promised. Robin and Ange did the same.
"Ange, I'm leaving my music with you."
"Okay." The moment of goodbye was approaching and Ange could feel it. He had so much to tell Guiltia. So many things to talk about. So much that the helplessness brought tears to his eyes.
Ange poured his every feeling, every emotion and everything he wanted to convey to the man standing in front of him into a single sentence. "Guil...I love you."
More scars appeared on Guiltia's body and he glowed red, nearing the end of his time. His friends screamed his name in sadness.
"I'm all right." He tried to dissipate their worries in a futile attempt.
A scarlet tear slowly descended from the Scarlet Moon and landed into Ange's palm.
"Take it. It symbolises that we've won." Guiltia explained.
"If we use this-" The decaying vampire interrupted him with a shake of his head.
With a resigned smile, Guiltia looked up at the glowing scarlet moon. "I'm just returning...to that place."
No one could've been warned of the mysterious and miraculous event that would follow after.
. . . . . . .
It's over... Angelique stood by herself in the empty arena. The lights had been out, confirming the end of the performance. The audience left one by one after the live ended. Some even had tears in their eyes while some cried. They hadn't expected this to be the final performance of their beloved OZ.
Now in the empty space, Angelique stood alone and stared at the dark stage. By now Guil-san must've....
She didn't complete her thoughts. No good would come out from that thought. So many thoughts swirled in her heart. She shook her head, trying to get rid of the negativity. I promised myself that I'll accept this. Besides, I should go to Ange now. He must be far more affected by Guil-san's death than me.
Quietly, she began walking towards the backstage. Just like Guil-san, I'll become mature and reliable for Ange. The only sound she could hear was the sound of her own uneven breaths.
Guil-san..... All of her thoughts revolved around a single vampire. Lightly, she chuckled to herself. I wonder, when did he become so important and irreplaceable to me.....?
...I'll have to get used to a life without him. She sighed and leaned her forehead against the door of OZ's green room. Goodbye, Guil-
"Angelique."
!!! Her heart skipped a beat when the familiar voice spoke her name. She stopped breathing for a second and her grey orbs shot open.
Almost painfully slowly, she turned her head to look behind, her heart full of impossible wishes.
"...!" Her breath got caught in her throat when she saw Guiltia standing there, smiling as if he had expected her to be this distraught. "Guil-san..."
The rest were behind him, each and everyone of them hiding their tears. Guiltia took a step towards her, his heart fluttering since he hadn't expected himself to be so loved.
"Guil-san.... are you really Guil-san?" She was stunned in her place. "How...?"
"The Scarlet Moon has given me another chance." He answered. "Indeed, a miracle has occurred."
That means.... he's alive....he's not gone..... he's.... he's here with us..... in front of me.
Finally, the man stopped right before her. "I apologise for the pain I caused you."
"You..." Tears stung the corners of her eyes, threatening to fall. She bit her lip and desperately tried to hold her tears back as the upsurging emotions reddened her face. I-I…
She didn't hesitate to close the distance between them by wrapping her petite arms around his torso. Her head leaned against his shoulder. With a broken voice, she whispered, "You're alive..."
"Yeah." He gingerly placed a hand behind her head in a comforting manner. The other hand rested on her back. From being so near her, he could easily feel her trembling. A pang of guilt also hit his heart.
"I'm sorry for having imposed such a burden on you." He carefully told her. "I don't want you to hurt yourself by confining everything any longer."
"Mm..." She released a shaky breath. "You're back...." She clutched his jacket and tried to take his warmth as much as possible. It really was Guiltia's scent. It's him… it's really him. . .
"You won't leave again, will you...?"
"I won't." He promised. He will be sure to keep this promise. He wouldn't hurt the people closest to him again. Silently vowing this in his heart, he tightened his embrace.
"Guil!" Ange was the one to burst into tears and join his sister to hug the blonde man from his left.
"Guil-san!" Robin did the same and wrapped his arms around both Guiltia and Angelique from the other side.
Even with tears rolling down his cheeks, Eve was smiling. His eyes met Guiltia's lavender ones. He also went ahead and hugged his old friend.
Guiltia sighed fondly. He had no idea he meant this much to everyone. In return, he embraced everyone and pulled them closer to him. This was his family. The solace, the family he found after Yutaka and Kotomi's tragedy. Who knew if tears were spotted at the corner of his eyes as well?
They didn't know for how long they had stayed like that, all the while expressing gratitude to have Guiltia back. When they finally pulled apart, Angelique profusely rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand. She hadn't cried because she didn't want to welcome him with tears.
"Guil-san." She called out, her own heart suddenly drumming against her chest.
When the said man met her gaze, she closed her eyes and beamed as brightly as she could. They weren't home yet but wherever the five of them were together, it was home to them.
"Welcome home!"
Guiltia never realised how much he had grown accustomed, and desired, to hear those words. He had returned home to his family: to Ange, Eve, Robin and Angelique. His lips curved upwards into a very rare happy smile. "I'm home."
All five of them could feel it: a new breeze blowing their way. A warm breeze that made them look forward to their future.
To be continued...
